In Kaufbeuren’s urban district of Neugablonz visitors have the opportu- nity to find out all about the world-famous glass and jewellery industry founded by Sudeten German expellees from Gablonz (now Jablonec) in Bohemia.
In the aftermath of WWII, roughly 18,000 of these exiles rebuilt their lives and glass and jewellery businesses on the ruins of a former munitions plant.
The Isergebirgs-Museum illustrates the unique history of Neu- gablonz in a “wonderland of glass”. In the glass-bead-maker’s workshop visitors will marvel at how coloured glass rods are transformed into beads, jewellery stones and buttons. The extraordinary development from these primitive beginnings is illustrated by the jewellery exhibits – from the potato- dough brooch to the extravagant buckle created for Marlene Dietrich. True
The „Erlebnisausstellung“ is a magical experience in which visitors explore the moving history and fascinating world of the Gablonz jewelle- ry industry. Gaze in awe at the “Perlurium”, thousands of glass beads cascading from a height of more than nine metres. Feel free to touch and try! Test your muscle strength and find out how heavy a bar of gold is in comparison with steel or copper.
