From the Pastor: SAVE THE DATE

Ministry Fair Extravaganza in the The Ministry of Ushers is the oldest lay ministry in the Parish Hall Catholic Church. With a long tradition of being the “gatekeepers”, todays Usher has the function of being August 27th & 28th the welcoming face, along with our Greeters, of St. Peter Chanel, serving as my representative. Our Following all weekend Masses parish prides itself on offering to all who come through our doors a sense of hospitality.

Yes, our Ushers help to find seats for Mass participants. They assist with both the collection and the distribution of the bulletin. But it is their demeanor, attire, and general sense of friendly welcome that makes a difference to both the newcomer or the long time parishioner, letting them know we are glad that they are here.

My name isn’t Uncle Sam, but I am looking for a few good men (and women) to join the ranks of our Ushers, so that we can continue our parish tradition of treating each other as family. Send me an email if you are interested in serving the parish, your fellow parishioners, and helping me by volunteering to be an usher.

We offer our annual blessing today for students and teachers as the new school year begins. In light of recent tragedies, this blessing takes on a special significance. Our prayer for our children and all those who have a role in their growth and development is that these children (whether 4 or 24) are wiser, kinder, and simply even better individuals at the end of the school year than on the day it begins. May they model themselves after Jesus, as a youth. Scripture says that Jesus “grew in wisdom, age, and grace”. May the same be said of them. 11330 Woodstock Road Roswell, GA 30075 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3

LIFT Being a parent involves a lot of lifting. We lift our infants from their cribs when they need to be fed or comforted. Later on, we lift them when they fall and scrape a knee. We “give them a lift” to soccer practice or piano lessons. When they are sad and “need a lift,” we find ways to cheer them up. In the musical Les Misérables, the hero promises a dying mother that he will care for her daughter. “I will raise her to the light,” he says. Strong "Remaining Faithful in the Workplace— Catholic parents raise their children toward the light of A Catholic Executive’s Journey to a Life of Christ. We do this in many ways throughout the days, weeks, and years they are in our care. Ask yourself, How Servant Leadership" have I “raised my child to the light” in recent days? RCIA…For Adults Who Would Like to Become Catholic or Complete Their Sacraments Contact: Margaret O’Grady at 678-832-1232 or [email protected]

Hunter Himes became Catholic in March, 2016!

Hunter’s journey to the Catholic Church included some interesting twists and turns. He was introduced to the Catholic faith when he met his future wife, Devin. Devin decided to become Catholic while she and Hunter were in college. Hunter was intrigued with her new found faith, passion to serve the community and share her gifts. Not long after graduation, they were married in the Catholic Church, which left an impression on Hunter that further prompted him to consider Catholicism. Just five weeks into their married life, Hunter began to have unusual physical symptoms, and nothing could have prepared him for the news of a brain tumor1 The loving prayers and well wishes reignited his desire to deepen his faith. He made the decision to join RCIA, a process for adults to become Catholic, shortly after his recovery. This is what he said about the experience: “When I finally decided to begin RCIA, everyone greeted me with open arms, and I immediately felt like an integral part of the group. Our discussions about the Catholic faith helped me to gain a better understanding of how people were living it. My prayer life changed, and now I take moments out of my day to relax and talk to God. After receiving the sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation this past Easter, I feel like a new man. God has blessed me in countless ways!”

To learn more about becoming Catholic we invite you to join us for a casual conversation about the RCIA process. We look forward to meeting you on August 10th at 7:00 pm in room 14. The RCIA process begins on August 21st.

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 7 Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cancer Home

Founded in 1939, the Cancer Home is staffed by the Hawthorne Dominican Sisters, and is dedicated to the care of terminal cancer patients. The facility is open to those who cannot afford to pay for care, and most of the patients are not Catholic. The current home was built in 1970, a two-story brick building designed specifically for this mission. Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home is one of seven free cancer homes operated by the Hawthorne Dominican Sisters. The home is supported by the generosity of a sympathetic public. Donations large and small from groups and individuals have provided the necessary funds from the very beginning. When Rose Hawthorne Lathrop began this labor of love in 1896, she said it was to be God’s work. The sisters placed their trust in the loving providence of God and that trust has never failed. You have three ways to support this wonderful ministry:

Catechist Faith Formation Day Saturday, August 20th Our annual Catechist Certification Conference of the North and Northwest Metro Deaneries of the Archdiocese of Atlanta will be held at St. Jude the Apostle Church in Sandy Springs this year. The day includes both English and Spanish keynote speakers, as well as many featured speakers. Sessions are offered for all phases of catechesis, and all experience levels of catechists. Lunch is provided for all participants. Although the focus of the conference is methodology, theology sessions are offered especially for experienced catechists. We encourage all catechists and core team members to participate if you are able, even if only for a session or two. The conference is well worth your while, and sessions can be applied toward your ongoing catechist certification. Parents, ministry volunteers and interested parishioners are also welcome to attend.
