This document provides summaries of all projects receiving grants in 1992 and is also, in effect, a 1992 annual report for each Programmatic Area supported by HHMI. Howard Hughes Medical Institute Grants for Science Education 1992-1993 Office of Grants and Special Programs Howard Hughes Medical Institute Themissionofthe Howard Hughes Medical Institute is bio- medical research and education. The twofold concern of the re- search program is the investigation of fundamental questions in mod- ern biology and application of re- cent advances in scientific knowl- edge to the alleviation of disease and the promotion of health. Insti- tute laboratories at more than 50 leading.academic medical centers, hospitals, and universities through- out the United States are conduct- ing research in five principal areas: cell biology and regulation, genet- ics,immunology,neuroscience, and structural biology. In the fall of 1987, the Institute launched a grants program to help strengthen education in medicine, biology, and related sciences, com- plementing the Institute's research program. The grants support gradu- ate, undergraduate, precollege and public science education, and fun- damental biomedical research abroad. Future support is planned for studies on health sciences pol- icy.
