CURRENT THEOLOGY CURRENT ACCENTS IN LUTHER STUDY: 1960-67 In 1521, the year in which Luther made his stand at Worms in what the Whiggish English historian James Froude has described as "perhaps the finest scene in human history," Luther exclaimed: "We have become the spectacle of the world!" Four and a half centuries later Luther is once again in front and center as the Church reconsiders its past with an eye toward the future. "The historian," quipped the philosopher A. W. Schlegel, "is a prophet looking backward." In the eighteenth century J. G. Hamann, the magus of the North, could lament (1759) : "What a shame for our times that the spirit of this man [Luther] who founded our church lies thus under the ashes. What a power of eloquence, what a spirit for interpretation, what a prophet I How good the old wine will taste to you!" A hundred years later Theodosius Harnack declared the renewed study of Luther's theology to be one of the joyous developments in theological scholarship, although his own two-volume work (1862) remained almost a unique effort in the dismal nine teenth century. With the renaissance of Reformation studies in the twentieth century, Luther literature has reached mountainous proportions, so that one American scholar has estimated that more has been written about Luther than about any other person in history with the exception of Christ. The fifty years between the Reformation celebrations in 1917 and the year 1967 have not only witnessed an increase in volume but also the emerg ence of many new lines of inquiry in Luther study. -

Ericksen Kurt Mayer Chair in Holocaust Studies Pacific Lutheran University I am pleased to deliver the Raul Hilberg Memorial Lecture, not only for the chance to join the impressive list of prior speakers, but because of Raul Hilberg himself. He was the man who essentially invented Holocaust Studies, completing his path-breaking work while teaching here at the University of Vermont. When Hilberg began his graduate program in political science at Columbia University, he was twenty-two years old. At that time, in 1948, he focused already on the idea and the research project that would make him known to all of us. Here is his description of that moment in his 1996 book, Politics of Memory: "I had become sure of myself, secure in my decision, certain that I would fill in the pieces of my jigsaw puzzle."1 He soon approached one of his professors at Columbia, Franz Neumann, the author of Behemoth and an imposing scholar on Nazi Germany.2 Hilberg asked Neumann if he would take on his proposal for a doctoral dissertation, "The Destruction of the European Jews." Neumann said yes, but he then added the comment, "It's your funeral."3 This exchange took place just three years after the defeat of Hitler's Germany and long before Holocaust Studies had begun to make its mark in the world of ideas. -

PRESENTATION CHRISTIAN CONVICTION AND CULTURAL ACCOMODATION North Carolina Council of Churches Greensboro, North Carolina February 21, 2011 THE BARMEN DECLARATION (by Bob Osborn) The Barmen Declaration The Declaration was published in May, 1934, by the Confessing Synod of the German Evvangelical (Protestant) church that is, the Reformed, Lutheran and United churches, meeting in the Reformed church of Barmen. The occasion was a critical, threatening division of the church brought about by the German Christian faction within the church. It was drafted by a theological committee appointed by the churches. It consisted of two Lutheran pastors, a Lutheran professor and one Reformed professor, Swiss Professor Karl Barth, of Bonn University. During the nap time of the committee meeting, after lunch, when the others were sleeping, Karl Barth drafted the Declaration. In most respects it is a fine statement of Barth=s theology. At the same time, it brings together concerns of both the Reformed and Lutheran churches, but above all it addresses the problems posed by the German Christians that were threatening the church. In effect it sets forth a doctrine of the church. It has been adopted by Reformed churches throughout the world as a confession of their faith. Lutherans, on the other hand who really acknowledge only one confession, the Augsburg Confession, regarded it as a Declaration of the Confessing Church only for the particular time that it was drafted, that is during the Nazi era. It should be noticed that it did not directly address the political situation, that is Nazism. It spoke to the reality of the of the day only indirectly as it spoke to the church. -

By: William D. Wilson Under the mentorship of Brian K. Feltman Abstract During the years of the Nazi regime in Germany, the government introduced a doctrine known as Gleichschaltung (coordination). Gleichschaltung attempted to force the German people to conform to Nazi ideology. As a result of Gleichschaltung the Deutsche Christens (German Christians) diminished the importance of the Old Testament, rejected the biblical Jesus, and propagated proper Nazi gender roles. This thesis will argue that Deutsche Christen movement became the driving force of Nazi ideology within the Protestant Church and quickly dissented from orthodox Christian theology becoming heretical. -

Haskell INTRODUCTION: GROTIUS AS NARRATIVE Hugo Grotius (1583–1645) frequently occupies the title, “‘father’ of international law.”1 While the origins of professional lineage were a source of professional and personal conflict for jurists in the nineteenth century, scholars today tend to treat Grotius as either a symbolic marker of changing historical thought, or the symbolic figure of a style or school of global governance.2 In the first instance, Grotius is important because he made a methodological leap in one form or another -

1 Luther: Objectively and/or Subjectively Luther at First Glance In our part of the world Martin Luther is one of those historical entities everyone has heard about, but only a few people can say anything more precisely. That is certainly true for the bulk of our society; probably it is equally true of the situation within the churches themselves, at least the Lutheran church. In Catholic theology and the Catholic Church the Reformer is occasionally perceived as an authentic witness to Christian existence despite the remaining dogmatic reservations in his regard, but within our own ranks he is often approached with a certain bewilderment. Evidently there are difficulties in gaining access to Luther, and also a certain suspicion that it might not be worthwhile. Important authors have played their part in spreading a negative cliché about the Reformer. In his famous Washington speech of 1945, Thomas Mann asserted that “Martin Luther, a gigantic incarnation of the German spirit, was exceptionally musical. I frankly confess that I do not love him. Germanism in its unalloyed state, the Separatist, Anti-Roman, Anti-European shocks me and frightens me, even when it appears in the guise of evangelical freedom and spiritual emanci- pation; and the specifically Lutheran, the choleric coarseness, the invective, the fuming and raging, the extravagant rudeness coupled with tender depth of feeling and with the most clumsy superstition and belief in incubi, and changelings, arouses my instinctive antipathy. I should not have liked to be Luther’s dinner guest. .”1 Is Martin Luther really a medieval German lout who has no place in today’s civilized Europe, with its absence of internal boundaries and its lively economic and intellectual exchanges? It could seem that way. -

Their children, Eleanor Katz and Harvey M. Meyerhoff, Chairman Emeritus of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, endowed this lecture. My title for this Meyerhoff Lecture addresses the question of Christian complicity in the Holocaust, with attention also to “changing views” over time on the role of German churches. It has been just over sixty years since the Holocaust came to an end. By coincidence, my first scholarly article on the topic appeared in 1977, at approximately the halfway point of this sixty-year period. I will use the two halves of this timeframe to suggest that a transition occurred at about that middle point, a transition in which evidence concerning the pervasive participation of Germans and of German churches in the Nazi state and widespread support of its policies has increasingly undercut ubiquitous German claims of innocence. During the first years after the war, many or most Germans, Christians and otherwise, claimed never to have supported Adolf Hitler and not to have been responsible for atrocities committed by the Nazi regime. -
