Year in Review Iziko means a ‘hearth’ in isiXhosa.

Traditionally, the hearth is the social centre of the home.

It is associated with warmth, kinship, and ancestral spirits.

Here food is prepared and shared, stories are told and knowledge is passed on from one generation to the next.

Similarly, the 12 national museums that make up Iziko are centres of cultural interaction where knowledge is shared, stories told and experiences enjoyed. Vision of are African museums of excellence that empower and inspire all people to celebrate and respect our diverse heritage.

In 2010 Iziko will open the Social History Centre in the newly renovated National Mutual Building. A seven story state of the art archive for our extensive Social History Collections and a Library will be additional assets.

The Courtyard project which start in late 2010 will allow the public discretionary access to the extensive research facilities at the South African Museum

A formal agreement regarding the exhibition of Timbuktu’s historical manuscripts was signed by the governments of and Mali, a process facilitated by Iziko.

DAC and the Ahmed Baba Institution partnered with Iziko to produce: the Timbuktu: Script and Scholarship exhibition.

Iziko projects supported by the Department of Public Works 2008/09:

Iziko Social History Centre: the extensive renovation and provision of a new library and state of the art storage facility at the National Mutual Building is nearing completion. Wingfield Hangar: DPW has assisted in finding an alternative hangar at Wingfield as a permanent solution for storage of large objects primarily from the Social History Collections. Bertram House: interior repair and renovation of wallpaper damage is currently being finalised. CCTV Security System Project: a Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) security system was installed at 5 of our 12 sites. (ISANG, ISAM, Slave Lodge and the William Fehr Collection at the Castle) Disabled Access Project: making our sites accessible to all. Koopmans-de Wet house: planned tiled floors repair. A new facility to house the Social History Collections and Library:

The new Iziko Social History Centre on Church Square is now scheduled for completion in the second half of 2009.

Interior and Exterior signage has been developed by signage experts in line with international best practice.

A Control Room has been built for security at ISAM

Funding of R2 million has been secured from DAC to upgrade the signage and wayfinding at ISAM and an application to activate the existing WCS number to roll out the upgrade at other sites as a Capital Works project is awaiting approval. The implementation of the Courtyard Project scheduled to commence after the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Albert Adams: Journey on a Tight-rope is the first comprehensive retro- spective exhibition of works by the renowned and well loved Albert Adams. It was curated by Marilyn Martin, Joe Dolby and Andrea Lewis, with invaluable advice and support from Edward Glennon in London. It is a salutation to a great artist who remained a missing person in South African art history books. The exhibition, and its accompanying catalogue, aimed to redress that absence. Also opened on Heritage Day at the Iziko SA National Gallery was Voices of the Ancestors: Musical instruments from the Iziko Collections. The title of the exhibition refers to the belief that in certain contexts the spirit world can be accessed through music. The exhibition was curated by Carol Kaufmann. A very successful project during 2008 was the video installation, Secretly I will love you more, by artist Andrew Putter, at the Old Town House. This award-winning installation has been widely celebrated as an important and groundbreaking artwork. The project involved collaboration between two curators, Pam Warne and Nadja Daehnke. I am not me, the horse is not mine. This installation was first presented at the Sydney Biennale in June 2008 to international acclaim and its presentation at the ISANG was a coup for the gallery. Educators, guides and CSM staff all reported an increase in public attendance in response to this dynamic installation. Iziko implemented a new pricing strategy As part of our commitment to making Iziko museums accessible to all South Africans our museums are free every day to visitors 16 years and under & we actively promote free commemorative days on:

Heritage Week; Human Rights Day; Freedom Day; International Museums Day; Africa Day Youth Day; National Women’s Day; National Aids Awareness/Emancipation Day

Marketing and public programme campaigns are strategically focused around selected commemorative days each year to promote our museums to non-visitors. Iziko Museums marked World AIDS Day/ Emancipation Day 1 December 2008 by encouraging individuals infected and affected by this disease to emancipate themselves from the stigma and prejudice still very much associated with this pandemic.
