1. Introduction: Siting and Experiencing Divinity in Bengal
chapter 1 Introduction : Siting and Experiencing Divinity in Bengal-Vaishnavism background The anthropology of Hinduism has amply established that Hindus have a strong involvement with sacred geography. The Hindu sacred topography is dotted with innumerable pilgrimage places, and popu- lar Hinduism is abundant with spatial imaginings. Thus, Shiva and his partner, the mother goddess, live in the Himalayas; goddesses descend to earth as beautiful rivers; the goddess Kali’s body parts are imagined to have fallen in various sites of Hindu geography, sanctifying them as sacred centers; and yogis meditate in forests. Bengal similarly has a thriving culture of exalting sacred centers and pilgrimage places, one of the most important being the Navadvip-Mayapur sacred complex, Bengal’s greatest site of guru-centered Vaishnavite pilgrimage and devo- tional life. While one would ordinarily associate Hindu pilgrimage cen- ters with a single place, for instance, Ayodhya, Vrindavan, or Banaras, and while the anthropology of South Asian pilgrimage has largely been single-place-centered, Navadvip and Mayapur, situated on opposite banks of the river Ganga in the Nadia District of West Bengal, are both famous as the birthplace(s) of the medieval saint, Chaitanya (1486– 1533), who popularized Vaishnavism on the greatest scale in eastern India, and are thus of massive simultaneous importance to pilgrims in contemporary Bengal. For devotees, the medieval town of Navadvip represents a Vaishnava place of antique pilgrimage crammed with cen- turies-old temples and ashrams, and Mayapur, a small village rapidly 1 2 | Chapter 1 developed since the nineteenth century, contrarily represents the glossy headquarters site of ISKCON (the International Society for Krishna Consciousness), India’s most famous globalized, high-profile, modern- ized guru movement. -

We have here the gurukula students who will chant the mantras and different pujaris, brahmanas and sanyasis will offer the sacred items. See the deities have come forward in their utsav murti and you can offer your prayers to the deities what seva you want to do. ISKCON Deity Worship Ministry Report 2014
ISKCON Deity Worship Ministry CY2014 Report Executive Summary 2 A Summary of Achievements During 2014 3 Education and Training 3 2014 Temple visit and activity summaries 5 Publications 7 Website/E-mail 7 Installations 8 Resources 10 Consultation 10 Challenges 10 Vision for Our Activities for 2015 12 Vision 12 Progressive goals 12 Needs 13 A message to the GBC Executive Committee 15 1 Executive Summary The Mayapur Academy held its 8th consecutive ‘Diploma in Arcana’ semester this year with 50 devotees attending. All the courses were again presented with simultaneous Russian translation and written materials. Our focus for the Mayapur Academy is to expand the training and improve curriculum for the English, Bengali, and Russian speaking students. ISKCON Deity Worship Ministry now has 10 regional representatives, with the addition of 2 new representatives this year. Between them they visited 81 temples in 2014. Their findings were generally consistent, i.e. lack of manpower, inadequate training, and inadequate standards of cleanliness. Our prime organizational initiative for the future of deity worship in ISKCON is to have local representatives serving every ISKCON temple in the world. Expanding our network of representatives will increase the training we are able to offer. This will enable devotees to be more effective in their service, and the ministry will be more effective in monitoring temples to identify potential problems earlier and possibly avert crises in the future. There is a global shortage of qualified pujaris despite an ever increasing number of new brahmanas. Many temples are experiencing great difficulty in maintaining their deity worship. We encourage ISKCON leaders to require new brahmanas to contribute to the temple seva by making it a general condition for 2nd initiation. -
