Managing your club’s finances

A GUIDE FROM ANZ: PROUD SUPPORTERS OF NEW ZEALAND’S SUMMER GAME Welcome

We have been a proud sponsor of International Cricket in New Zealand for over 12 years, from the elite to the grass roots level, and we are proud to continue supporting New Zealand’s summer game.

ANZ understands that the cricket community comes in all sorts of different shapes and sizes, all with differing needs. That’s why ANZ has created initiatives to support the development and sustainability of cricket at the grass roots level, including our Super Camps and Grant Scheme. To date we have awarded grants totalling $300,000 to clubs, schools and individuals. Finance is a major challenge for most clubs, so we’ve created this guide to show you how ANZ can help your club get more support. It contains practical, relevant information to help you improve your club’s finances and access ANZ resources including our Grant Scheme, our ANZ Partners programme, our A-Z reviews and our ANZ Biz Hub. There’s also an introduction to ANZ Cricket World, our new online hub for all things cricket where you and your members can get more this season. If you’d like to know more, please email us at [email protected] and we will put you in touch with the right person for your query. We will make sure your questions are answered and you receive the support you need for your club fundraising and general club initiatives. Contents

Most cricket clubs are non-profit organisations, run by volunteers who give up their valuable time for the love of the game. However, the most successful clubs are run along the same lines as successful businesses. The first step is to make sure you have the financial basics in place – the right people and processes. –3 2–

Treasurer The Treasurer has overall responsibility for the club’s finances, and works closely with the club’s Management Committee. The Management Committee has ultimate responsibility for deciding how the club’s resources will be used; the Treasurer’s role is to manage the club’s finances in the best way to enable the club to achieve its goals. Previous financial knowledge or experience is useful but not essential; however it’s essential that your Treasurer is well organised, has en eye for detail, can keep good records and is a good communicator.

Business plan and budget Your business plan sets out what the club wants to achieve over the short and long terms – for example, fielding a certain number of teams, attracting new members, providing coaching, or upgrading gear and/or facilities. Your budget sets out how much this will cost and how you will fund it.

Cashflow Plan Cashflow is the lifeblood of any business – and any club. You can be trading profitably but still run into difficulties if you haven’t planned your cashflow sufficiently. Cashflow planning is simply making sure you will have enough cash on hand to meet expenses like registration fees when they fall due. Setting up things like monthly direct debits for membership fees and spreading costs throughout the year can help improve your club’s cashflow. Keeping accounts and records Having good accounting and record-keeping systems in place will make your finances much easier and more effective. It will also save a lot of time when it comes to filing GST and tax returns. Whether it’s a simple income and expenditure record or a book-keeping package depends on your specific needs.

Cash handling and banking Having clear procedures for handling the various amounts of cash in your club (e.g. from bar takings or payments for gear) is important, as is a process for ensuring money is recorded and banked as soon as possible. Having the right bank accounts can help streamline your finances easier as well as making the most out of club funds. You can also make your banking and finances easier by using services like Internet Banking or (for larger clubs) ANZ’s Direct Online. Fundraising For most clubs, fundraising is a constant burden – but having a well thought out fundraising plan can make it easier. The first step is to investigate all potential sources of funding including: National and community trusts and funds (New Zealand Community Trusts, Pub Charity, local or regional trusts, etc.) Sponsorship opportunities Cricket-related schemes such as the ANZ Grant Scheme Partnership opportunities, such as ANZ Partners Events such as quiz nights, auctions and raffles. Having a mix of fundraising initiatives is a good idea as it means you can spread the load amongst members according to their skills and interests, and also provides a larger pool of people and organisations to tap into.

Keeping your costs under control A few simple measures can help reduce the cost of running your club – and the more you save, the more you’ll have available for club development. For example: Shop around – in many clubs arrangements for things like electricity, telecom- munications, insurance etc. just tick over from year to year – but getting a better deal on these things can save your club a lot of money. Form alliances with other cricket or sports clubs in your area to save money through bulk buying. Make the most of your members and supporters – create a skills register showing what they can contribute to club activities. For example, builders, electricians and other trades people may be willing to give their time to make clubroom repairs and extensions much more affordable. 4–5 Building a partnership: How ANZ can help you grow your club

ANZ supports cricket at all levels – and we offer a number of practical resources to help your club succeed.

ANZ Partners The ANZ Partners programme is a great way for your club to earn credits you can redeem for a variety of rewards, from travel vouchers to help teams get to tournaments to clubroom equipment, and more. By referring your members and wider network to an ANZ Mobile Mortgage Manager you can help them get a great home loan and great service, and help your club achieve its goals at the same time. For more information about ANZ Partners and how to join the programme, email your questions and your region to [email protected] and we will put you in touch with the right person to help you with your query. 6–7 to book an A-Z Review. Hastings’ Cornwall Cricket Club Hastings Cornwall Cricket Club can now bowl at full speed and perfect their techniques, thanks to a $5,000 grant to help repair the club’s run-ups. Director of cricket, David Black says the grant completes the club’s fundraising to repair their bowling run-ups. “Our three bowling run-ups are 10 years old, worn out and uneven. Our bowlers have lost the confidence to deliver a good run-up because they’re scared of injury. It makes it tough for us to practice and improve.

“Receiving this grant means we’re now in the position to go full steam ahead and build a better bowling facility for our players. We’re absolutely thrilled,’ he says. 10– 11 families.
