Regnery); phone: +49 261 1306 5987 Journal Pre-proof A manuscript prepared for possible publication in: Science of the Total Environment May 2020 1 Journal Pre-proof Abstract Prevalent findings of anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) residues in liver tissue of freshwater fish recently emphasized the existence of aquatic exposure pathways. Thus, a comprehensive wastewater treatment plant and surface water monitoring campaign was conducted at two urban catchments in Germany in 2018 and 2019 to investigate potential emission sources of ARs into the aquatic environment. Over several months, the occurrence and fate of all eight ARs authorized in the European Union as well as two pharmaceutical anticoagulants was monitored in a variety of aqueous, solid, and biological environmental matrices during and after widespread sewer baiting with AR-containing bait. As a result, sewer baiting in combined sewer systems, besides outdoor rodent control at the surface, was identified as a substantial contributor of these biocidal active ingredients in the aquatic environment. In conjunction with heavy or prolonged precipitation during bait application in combined sewer systems, a direct link between sewer baiting and AR residues in wastewater treatment plant influent, effluent, and the liver of freshwater fish was established. -

RETURN TO TERROIR “Biodynamy, wine growing for the future” TASTING Is biodynamic Wine-growing a Myth or a Realit y? By Nicolas Joly – Coulée de Serrant There is no doubt that more and more fascinated private individuals and professionals are discovering a source of complexity, a surge of vitality, and an additional purity in the increasing number of biodynamic wines. There is also no doubt that this type of agriculture, which differs from biological agriculture insofar as it adds very small amounts of preparations per hectares, quantities varying from one to one hundred grams, that have usually been dynamised in water, can upset those who try to understand it. How can such small quantities have any real effect on the quality of wine? Wouldn’t the result be the same with simple biological agriculture? Faced with these questions, the group of those in favour and those against puff themselves up by publicly making boasts on a regular basis, as behind the scenes both sides prepare for battle. In order to pass from the profound convictions which generate belief to knowledge and thus a more rigorous demonstration, there is finally a step to be taken here. It is on this approach that partially depends the authenticity of the quality of our future wines. Let us begin by observing the corpse of an animal that has just died. In a few weeks its simple elements will again be part of the earth. Thus the question to ask is: where are the energies which constructed this organism in such a sophisticated manner? Who took the calcium to sculpt the bone? Who took the silica to form the hair? Don’t these forces exist in other ways besides forming embryos? A seed, an egg. -

WEINGUT WITTMANN 2019 Aulerde Riesling Grosses Gewächs (GG) A dark and brooding dry Riesling from the warm heart of the Grosse Lage (grand cru) Aulerde vineyard in Westhofen. First documented in 1380, the Aulerde site lies at the foot of the protective slopes of the Kirchspiel vineyard, and it is the estate’s warmest site. The topsoil is mostly a deep layer of loess, but in a small portion of Aulerde there is a heavy clayish marl with only a small amount of limestone. It is only in this parcel that Riesling is grown in the Aulerde vineyard. THE WITTMANN ESTATE The Wittmann estate has as its foundation the pursuit of balanced wines that have tension, depth and intensity, but are at the same time fresh and elegant. Owner Philipp Wittmann has no doubt that this complex character can only be created in the vineyard, so attention to detail in the viticulture is of primary importance. Philipp works for natural balance in the vineyards, in order to harvest grapes that have fully developed flavors and a well-balanced structure. The Rheinhessen is a vast area of rolling hills in the knee of the Rhine river, near Mainz. Wine grapes have been cultivated here since Roman times, and many different grape varieties are grown, including the Pinots. The soils are primarily based on limestone, with a mix of topsoils, including clay, marl and loess. THE 2019 VINTAGE Sticking to the ongoing theme of “Weather Gone Wild,” 2019 once again proved itself to be a year of extremes. But the wines show a juicy freshness, playful and delicate acidity and strong minerality on the palate. -

Vineyards of Westhofen Winemaker Philipp Wittmann WEINGUT WITTMANN 2018 Westhofener Riesling Trocken WEINGUT WITTMANN The Wittmann estate has as its foundation the pursuit of balanced wines that have tension, depth and intensity, but are at the same time fresh and elegant. Owner Philipp Wittmann has no doubt that this complex character can only be created in the vineyard, so attention to detail in the viticulture is of primary importance. Philipp looks for natural balance in the vineyards, in order to slow the ripening process and harvest grapes that have fully developed flavors, but are not overripe and still have moderate must weights. All of the Wittmann estate vineyards are certified Organic and Biodynamic. THE RHEINHESSEN REGION The Rheinhessen is a vast area of rolling hills in the knee of the Rhine river, between the Pfalz and the Rheingau. Wine grapes have been cultivated here since Roman times. Many different grape varieties are grown here, including the Pinot varieties. The soils are primarily based on limestone, with a mix of topsoils, including clay, marl and loess. WESTHOFENER RIESLING TROCKEN This is the estate’s “village” wine (VDP.Ortswein), selected from younger blocks (5 to 15 years) in the Grosse Lage (grand cru) Morstein and Brunnenhäuschen vineyards. It is a selective hand harvest of fully ripe grapes that are gently pressed and naturally fermented in large, neutral oak casks. Rich in mineral tones, this wine shows the great potential of these tops sites. WEINGUT WITTMANN 2019 Estate Riesling Trocken A beautifully proportioned dry Riesling from the leader of Biodynamic viticulture in Grmany’s Rheinhessen region. The Wittmann Estate Riesling Trocken is harvested by hand from estate-owned vineyards around the village of Westhofen, in the southern part of the Rheinhessen region. It is fermented with native yeasts and matured in large, neutral oak casks.
