Auckland Car Club’s Monthly Magazine – Race, Rally, Clubsport and more… FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hi Everyone,

I was asked the other day why I don’t write about Kiwi divers who have achieved or won races etc in my report for the newsletter.

Many of these drivers are Auckland Car Club members and certainly are worthy of mention but for those who follow the sport closely there are so many online publications and social media sites that whatever I have to say would be irrelevant and old news.

I do however have contact details for a lot of these guys and always make a habit of sending them congratulations on behalf of the club and of course we have our top awards namely the Bruce McLaren and which are awarded annually.

I prefer to keep stuff that is basically everyday club stuff and more relatable to those that participate in our events.

Unfortunately, part of club life is the passing away of members and recently we lost another long-time member and competitor Chris Dodd. I knew Chris well and competed against him in Muscle Cars for many years going back to the Mid 90’s when I started, but Chris was already campaigning a V8 XY Falcon going back into the 80’s with the Production Supercars. In more recent times he ran a bright yellow XD Falcon (we affectionately nick named the TAXI) and yes Chris was a Ford man. Our condolences go to Chris’s family and those he has left behind.

Our Rally meeting in Paihia was another success with the local community and all competitors having positive comments. Unfortunately, competitor numbers were once again just short of covering the cost of the rally but shared between Auckland, Northern and Hibiscus Coast clubs the loss is coverable and we will continue on with the event. The date for the rally will change for the 2020 season due to the WRC coming here in September. At this stage a date hasn’t been set in concrete but we are looking at going back to June and will finalise this as soon as possible.

Coming up we have a race meeting in Taupo and our annual Roll of Honour ceremony and we look forward to both events especially being able to recognise those people that have done so much in and for the sport. We would enjoy your company at the clubrooms to celebrate these recipients and would appreciate it if you are able to make it along it is an easy relaxed afternoon and casual dress is all that is required.

Lastly, we have just managed to have the last part of the carpark sealed after having constructed a retaining wall to level out the rear of the parking lot and it certainly has completed the appearance of the clubrooms so the Roll of honour would be a perfect time to come and check it out.

ALL CLASSIC JAPANESE SERIES – ROUND 2

Round 2 saw another good entry of 20 cars, with all the guest drivers from Round 1 having confirmed their membership of the Series for the rest of the year. Brittany Sheweiry’s car looked much better than it did at the end of Round I, with just a few battle scars remaining. Shaun Midgen’s car was resplendent in a new paint job to go along with some major engine upgrades.

With a damp track and new seal along pit straight and round the sweeper, everyone took qualifying very cautiously. Brittany was experiencing some braking issues, a legacy from the crash, but some frantic work by her pit crew resolved these before the start of race 1.

Race 1 saw Shaun Midgen rocket into a comfortable lead before stuttering to a halt on lap five with the idle control valve breaking off the inlet manifold. That was his day done. With Shaun out of the running, a ding dong battle ensued between Bryce Bindon (Invitation), Bryce Richards (Group 1) and Scott Curtis (Group 1), with all three cars crossing the finish line within 1.5 seconds of each other. Scott’s overheating dramas of Round 1 had been resolved to the extent that the car was now running too cold. You can’t win with race cars, can you? Jason Brown won Group 2, beating home Grant Richards by 0.05 seconds.

Race 2 saw the Scott and the two Bryces giving a lead of 1m 17 seconds to pole car Rob Mullins. Bryce Richards had the best result of the three, getting to within 5 seconds of race winner Jason Brown (Group 2) by the end. Clint Harvey took out Group 1 just ahead of Linda Grey. Bruce Clothier won Invitation, just 0.5 seconds ahead of a hard charging Bryce Bindon. Scott Curtis had another meeting to forget with a failed igniter that finished his day, and Alec Newald’s season isn’t getting any better either. A failed alternator caused another dnf and the lack of a spare battery meant that the car was parked for the day.

Race 3 was a ladies benefit, with Brittany Sheweiry having got back up to full speed and taking good win in Group 1 with Linda Grey coming fast behind. Less than one second separated them at the line. Bryce Bindon had an easier trip through the pack this time to win the Invitation group, and new member Jacob Simonsen came from behind to beat Jason Brown for Group 2 honours.

PRODUCTION RACE SERIES – ROUND 2

This round was fairly busy as always with a 25-car grid and with the first of our one hour endurance races. We had a good mixture of cars with a few new ones in the mix like an Evo 7 and BMW E46.

We welcomed a few first-time drivers to the Series but we also saw the return of some familiar faces such as Peter Vodanovich and Marcus Heke.

We started the day with a strong grid for our first race which was followed by our first one hour. This was an opportunity for some great battles and saw an amazing feat from John Mulrennan, who bet his personal best lap times 21 times in a 40-lap race. Well-deserved and well done to John!

Unfortunately though there was a few cars that had to drop out due to mechanical failure and overheating issues. However, a great day was had by all and we look forward to our next round at Taupo next month.

Our Prime Speed Sports Driver of the Day was worn by Cobus Van Der Walt and our $200 dollar cash price was won by Dion Clerke.

Thanks, Martyn, Kim and Aaron.

NORTHERN MUSCLE CARS – ROUND 2 Results after round 2 – Pukekohe Park

NORTH ISLAND FORMULA FORD – ROUND 2

Billy Frazer wins the opening round of Formula Ford’s 2019-20 season!

6th of October saw the 2019/2020 North Island Formula Ford season kick off, with round 1 of 6 being held at Pukekohe Park Raceway alongside Auckland Car Club.

Most notable on the entry list is last season’s winner Callum Crawley, and the 2019 Winter series champion Billy Frazer, both in their Spectrum 015 machines. Right behind them in Class 1 is Ronan Murphy in his own Spectrum, and Alex Hawley returns to try to defend his Class 2 title and challenge for the overall cup, having had the winter to get to the bottom of his reliability woes. Cameron Tanner lines up on the grid chasing the top spot in Class 2, along with Jordan Mountfort in his Stealth. Representing Class 3 and showing the diversity of the Formula Ford grid is Martin Lucas, fresh off a strong weekend at Hampton Downs a week prior in the Historic Formula Ford series, Martin was keen to get amongst the young guns in the newer, but not necessarily faster, cars.

A damp track greeted the field for qualifying, with the first few laps spent finding the grip levels of the newly resurfaced front straight, and trying to get a clean lap amongst the sports cars (the two classes sharing a grid for the weekend). There were a few troubles for the stealth duo of Jordan Mountfort and Alex Hawley, with spins around the back of the circuit, Hawley bringing out the red flag as he got beached on the curb at the hairpin.

At the end of the 10 minutes, it was Crawley on top by over a second, Frazer and Murphy completed the top trio. Alex Halwey had qualified fourth, but would start race 1 from 7th due to a grid drop for bringing out the red flag. Tanner was 5th after carburetor issues had prevented a full flying lap, followed by Mountfort and Lucas.

A strong opening lap saw Billy Frazer take the lead in race 1, while Murphy and Tanner scuffled over third place behind. Hawley had a blinder of a start to jump Mountfort and Lucas, and set about regaining the lost ground to the leading pack just as a safety car was called for a stricken sports car on lap 2.

Frazer led the field to green, however Callum Crawley would find a way past the 16 year old to take the race lead. Not being able to hang on to the front 3, Tanner and Hawley were in a scrap of their own, before an unfortunate error at turn 2 saw Tanner run wide and find the tyre wall on the outside of turn 3. The safety car and subsequently a red flag was called to retrieve the stricken Van Diemen, leaving Crawley to take the win ahead of Frazer, Murphy, Hawley, Lucas and Mountfort.

With the grid for race 2 set form the fastest time of the day, it was Ronan Murphy who took pole position from Callum Crawley and Billy Frazer. Alex Hawley would complete row 2, followed by Martin Lucas and Jordan Mountfort. Callum Crawley got the jump on lap 1 to take the lead, but it was not long before a hard charging Billy Frazer would move past Callum, managing to stay out front the whole race. It was not without trying though, the lack of a safety resulting in the field having to deal with the slower sports cars in the latter stages of the race, a remarkably tricky situation given the speed a sports car can carry in a straight line. Murphy was the first to be caught out, losing valuable seconds to the leaders as he was forced to follow a lapped car through the turn 1-4 complex; however it would also affect Crawley and Frazer a few laps later.

It was not a race without incident however, a costly spin at turn 1 saw Hawley just find the inside wall, unfortunately with enough force to damage the car beyond repair for the day, with Alex out of harm's way and the car deemed to be safe, the race finished without further incident, with Mountfort and Lucas sparing for fourth and fifth up until the checkered flag

The final race of the day was a trouble free run, a strong showing by Frazer saw him take the win, 2.5 seconds clear of Crawley. Third was once again Ronan Murphy’s, capping off a strong weekend for the Hawks Bay driver. Jordan Mountfort got the better of Martin Lucas once again to come home fourth, the pair rounding out the now 5 car field.

Overall, Billy Frazer now leads the standings on 57 points, with Crawley close behind with 55. Ronan Murphy sits on 42, Mountfort on 34, Lucas with 33 and Alex Hawley with 12 points rounds out the scorers for the weekend.

The series now sets its sights on Mighty Manfeild next weekend (October 19th-20th), where it joins forces with the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship at the Octoberfast meeting. Entries are free for spectators and there is a massive range of crowd pleasing classes in attendance!

RACING SALOONS – ROUND 2

Round 2 done, and again, great to see so many new drivers, and a full grid.

A few minor hiccups, but still a great day of racing none the less, and the weather fining up into a beaut day made it complete. Roll on Round 3 in Taupo. Cheers, Rach.

NEW ZEALAND LEYLAND P76 OWNERS CLUB

The funeral of John Rossen had been held on the Monday preceding our meeting and several members were present. If a funeral can be described as great, then that would apply to Johns. I, and I am sure most people, are saddened at these events, but the tributes to John and the send-off that was given to him were appropriate, and impressive. The family donated to all the present a bottle of John’s favourite tipple, cider, along with a fitting photographic image and they generously gave us several to take to our next meeting to share his memory, which we did.
