2 Ashburton Guardian Wednesday, September 4, 2019 www.guardianonline.co.nz End of an era at the MSA

By Susan Sandys [email protected] When MSA Restaurant owner/ operator Pip Heney turned out the lights at close of business on Sunday night, it signalled the end of an era. It was the last night of opera- tion for the restaurant prior to it being demolished and recreated in a new rebuild. The restaurant has been in operation on its first-floor site above Burnett Street since 1982, a plaque on the wall recording it as being officially opened by the club’s president at the time, N. F. Dunn. Heney said it had become an institution in the town and be- ing part of that over the past nine years had been a great experi- ence. Initially she had hoped the lease held by herself and husband Dan could be extended beyond the nine years, and that when they decided to leave the busi- ness they had bought, they would be able to on-sell it. However, this ended up not being the case, as after the Canterbury earthquakes the MSA had decided rebuilding was required, meaning the only option was to walk away. “If this wasn’t having to hap- pen, I would be there another nine years,” Heney said. “I’ve met some incredible peo- Time to pack up: MSA Restaurant owner/operator Pip Heney says goodbye to an Ashburton institution. It’s the job of the Council to make decisions on behalf of our community that will make Ashburton a better place to live, work and play.

In the last three years we’ve seen decisions that have gone against the strong wishes of the community, like the permanent closure of the Ashburton i-Site Centre.

The plan to move the water feature from East Street, initially voted for by a majority of Council, was never feasible. Those involved in the original design and construction agreed it would cost far more than the Council estimated. That poor decision took weeks to unwind.

Every day that Council spends wasting time on nonsense is a day they’re not discussing the big challenges and opportunities our district faces.

On this date: In 1781, Los Angeles was founded by Spanish settlers under the leadership of Governor Felipe de Neve. In 1863, soon after leaving Nelson for Napier, the Delaware was wrecked in what is now known as Delaware Bay. In 1951, President Harry S. Truman addressed the nation from the Japanese peace treaty conference in San Francisco in the first live, coast-to-coast television broadcast. In 1957, Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus used Arkansas National Guardsmen to prevent nine black students from entering all-white Central High School in Little Rock. ■■TENNIS Monfils charges into quarters

AP

Gael Monfils quickly advanced to his third US Open quarter-final, needing less than an hour and a half to dispatch Pablo Andujuar 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 yesterday. Monfils, the No. 13 seed from France, was never seriously threat- ened against the 70th-ranked An- dujar, ripping 34 winners to just four from his opponent and never losing his serve. For the 33-year-old Monfils, Flushing Meadows gives him an- other chance to deliver on the po- tential of one of the game’s great shotmakers and showmen. Though he has now advanced to at least the quarter-finals of nine Grand Slam tournaments, he has never gone further than his semi-final showings at Roland Garros in 2008 and the US Open in 2016. Monfils next takes on No. 24 Matteo Berrettini, who earlier de- feated Andrey Rublev in straight sets. Meanwhile Naomi Osaka’s achy left knee didn’t let her serve with- out pain, so she didn’t practice that key part of her game leading into the US Open. The knee also prevented her from covering the court and preparing for shots the way she’d like. Those weren’t the only reasons that the No. 1-seeded Osaka’s 10-match winning streak at the US Open and title defence ended in the fourth round.
