Abstract Composition, diversity and abundance of rocky intertidal mollusks and their relationship with the environmental parameters, viz. water quality, total organic matter and calcium carbonate were determined. A total of 43 species were identified, of which 41 species belong to Class Gastropoda under 18 families and 2 species were categorized under Class Bivalvia from 2 families. Using several diversity indices, results revealed high diversity and equitability values in the 2 sampling sites. Moreover, comparison of the mollusks abundance between the 2 sampling stations showed station 2 to be dominantly abundant with Cerithium stercusmuscarum comprising almost one-third of the total population. Canonical Correspondence Analysis showed that total organic matter and calcium carbonate in the sediment may have influenced the abundance of mollusk assemblage in station 2. The results obtained from the study are vital in order to strongly support the need to continue monitoring the Lugait marine sanctuary and its nearby surroundings. -

Population energy budgets estimated on the assumption of steady state conditions for C. testudinaria (Linnaeus, 1758) on the rocky shore of Ohoiwait, are presented. Large difference in population structure, and hence energetics, occurred at different localities along the rocky shore. Relatively high proportions (98 %) of the assimilated energy was lost via metabolism. Assimilation efficiency is 39 %, net growth efficiency is 1.8 %, and ecological efficiency 0.3 %. Production (P), energy flow (A) and total energy consumption (C) were expressed as functions of animal size, in order to facilitate gross estimations of the energy component for which data on size frequency and density are available. (UPD, Philippines) in September 2003 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Marine Biology within the School of Marine Biology and Aquaculture James Cook University ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to describe the distribution of coral reef and shore gastropods in the Philippines, using the species rich taxa, Nerita, Clypeomorus, Muricidae, Littorinidae, Conus and Oliva. These taxa represent the major gastropod groups in the intertidal and shallow water ecosystems of the Philippines. This distribution is described with reference to the McManus (1985) basin isolation hypothesis of species diversity in Southeast Asia. I examine species-area relationships, range sizes and shapes, major ecological factors that may affect these relationships and ranges, and a phylogeny of one taxon. Range shape and orientation is largely determined by geography. Large ranges are typical of mid-intertidal herbivorous species. Triangualar shaped or narrow ranges are typical of carnivorous taxa. Narrow, overlapping distributions are more common in the central Philippines. The frequency of range sizesin the Philippines has the right skew typical of tropical high diversity systems.
