Update No. 201 – A Very Happy New Year To All

New Zealand, “Black Caps”, beat, in the December/Christmas/New Year period: West Indies 1st Test , Hamilton by an innings and 134 runs 2nd Test , by an inings and 12 runs Pakistan 1st Test , Mt Maunganui by 101 runs 2nd Test Seddon Park Hamilton by an innings and 176 runs

Since the summer of 2016/17 NZ has played 27 Tests winning 17, losing 6 and 4 were drawn – a truly remarkable effort. Curiously only 8 of the Tests were overseas but even there were were quite successful winning the series vs Pakistan 2-1 late 2018 in the U.A.E. and drawing 1-1 the away series vs Sri Lanka in September 2019. Only against Australia, in Australia last summer, did we falter losing 0-3. The record again: Played Won Lost Drawn Tests: In NZ 19 14 1 4 Overseas 8 3 5 0 Totals 27 17 6 4

One has to wonder why NZ plays so few Tests and so seldom overseas – England is scheduled to play 17 Tests this year (Covid permitting). We are shortly to welcome Australia here, for the first time since 2016 and, also Bangladesh, but not to play Tests – only T20s in preparation for the T20 Cricket World Cup.

One needs to be a bright Spark to watch the Black Caps these days – from phone to laptop to TV. Fortunately, for an IT challenged 79 year old, my son was equal to the task and, down at the bach, grandson and I were able to watch the Black Caps perform with distinction!

Our Aces

T20 – Dream 11 Super Smash: Aces are lying 6th – need support on Friday 1 Feb at when they meet Volts. Mark Chapman is back after his stint with the Black Caps and NZ A. He top scored on Sat. with 73 for the Aces.

50 Overs – Ford Trophy: Aces are 5th – final games vs Central Stags at Eden Park 19 & 21 Feb.

1st Class – : Aces are 3rd – behind leader Canterbury, then ND. Final games at Eden Park are vs Canterbury, 27-30 Mar. & vs Wellington, 3-6 April.

REMEMBER – we have several Parnell members playing for the Aces: Mark Chapman, Ben Horne, Will Somerville, Ollie Pringle and Brad Rodden – they deserve our fullest support so come to Eden Park and cheer them on!

Victorious EDCA Under 17 Team

The Victorious EDCA Under 17 XI Back: Roy Goodyear (Coach), Harry Cullen-Hieatt, Aaryan Prasad, Seb Macdonald, Campbell Joyce, Harry Sinclair, Jack Wright, Varun Garg Front: Brendan Meyer, Shaan Vaidu, Daniel Presland, Callum Murray, Josh Olliver, Jamal Todd (Parnell members in bold)

CRAIG PRESLAND REPORTING ON THE TOURNAMENT: EDCA U-17, with no fewer than 9 PCC players in the tournament squad of 13, won the ACA U-17 Districts tournament played at Lloyd Elmore Park 11-14th January after winning all 6 matches (4 T20’s and 2 LO50’s). Parnell CC players were as follows: Daniel Presland, Harry Sinclair, Seb Macdonald, Josh Olliver, Brendon Meyer, Campbell Joyce, Jack Wright, Harry Cullen - Hieatt and Varun Garg. The team was expertly coached by Roy Goodyear and managed by Lal Meyer.

Top run scorers were Josh Olliver (164), Daniel Presland (134) and Harry Sinclair (130). Top takers were Jack Wright (10), Daniel Presland (9) and Harry Cullen-Hieatt (8).

The following PCC players made the Auckland U-17 squad to train and play in a 3-day camp later this month (no national tournament due to COVID): Daniel Presland, Harry Sinclair, Josh Olliver and Jack Wright.

In addition, EDCA won the Peter Badley Shield again having won it 5 times over the past decade, but not since 2017/18 with North Harbour having won it over the past 2 seasons. This prestigious trophy is awarded to the best overall District (of 6) across all grades, this season involving boys U-17 and U-19, girls U-15 and U-19, EDCA winning 3 of these 4 grades.

The U17 Team played some outstanding cricket and what a way to win the Tournament and the Peter Badley Shield! When Brendan gracefully pushed that last ball past the bowler I thought it is was 2 runs and that we had at least tied the match, then it ran away for 4 and the game was over! Credit to quite a few people really (apart from the boys of course over the past 4 days), let’s name a few: • Roy Goodyear as coach, highly experienced and with a great manner with the boys • Lal Meyer as manager, who worked his butt off with all planning and logistical arrangements, communications etc • Simon O’Connor and Lal who sit on the EDCA committee, along with its Chair Scott Bainbridge. • Dave Richardson who ran the winter / spring trainings very well and identified much of the talent that we had • Richard Pithey who oversaw all team selections across all grades, a thankless task and done very astutely

Thanks to all, a great team effort and fantastic result!

The winning runs are scored and the ACA U17 Trophy is awarded – photos per Phototek

The Peter Badley Shield

Awarded to Eastern Districts – Best Performed District Across all Grades EDCA won 3 of the following 4 Grades - Boys U17 and U 19, Girls U15 and U19 Peter Badley, a past President and Life Member of Parnell CC, did a great deal for District Age Group cricket, first as Selector/Coach of EDCA U14s (EDCA won 8 of the 9 years under his mentorship). Later, when Peter was Secretary/Treasurer of ACA, the District Tournaments were expanded to include older age groups. Peter was eventually elected a Life Member of Auckland Cricket and then it’s Patron. The Shield is therefore most prestigious and EDCA is honoured to have won it 5 times in the past decade.

Auckland A vs Nthn Districts A 3 x T20, 13 & 14 Jan. at Colin Maiden Park

ND won the first 2 games and Auckland the 3rd. Flynn McGregor-Sumpter scored 10, 55 and 29 in the 3 gamesBrad Rodden played just the 1st in which he top scored for Auckland with 32. Ollie Pringle played all 3 – his figures 1/14, 1/47 and 1/24.

First game - Josh Fisher about to trap lbw for a duck. The Black Cap returning after injury had his hopes for a good workout dashed by Josh. Craig Speakman was there to capture the sequence of the dismissal – a feather in Josh’ cap! And see over for more!

Thanks Craig for capturing the sequence – the ball, the realisation, the appeal, the decision and, finally, the congratulations! Well done Josh – a great scalp!!

Premier Men’s Grade - Jeff Crowe Cup Round 5. Sat. 23 Jan. Parnell vs Howick Pakuranga at Lloyd Elsmore Park

PARNELL 276/7 (50) Andy Lane 63 (87), Ollie Pringle 94 (102), Jack Parsons 31 (30), Nathan Robinson 26* (23), Nikith Perera 26* (16), T Jolley 3/49 (10) HOWICK PAKURANGA 144/10 (37.4) W Walsh 53 (99), L Winn 37 (56), Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 2/23 (7), Henry King 3/25 (7), Aniket Parikh 2/31 (6), Nikith Perera 1/27 (7 RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 132 RUNS

Last week a disappointing loss to Takapuna – had them 4/43 but the foot came of the pedal as they totalled 261 and then our batsmen weren’t up to the task. Our start was also dismal – Ben Rae, back from honeymoon, out very first ball and Flynn, our new Skipper, was dismisssed soon after. Then it changed – Andy and Ollie together batted beautifully. Strokes all round the wicket but most particularly straight drives and the score rattled along at 5 an over. Andy left with the total 141 and, whilst neither Aniket nor DvD got going, Jack Parsons relished being back with the Prems. Meantime Ollie had very sadly been run out for 94 – he certainly deserved a ton! Nathan Robinson came to the wicket and, on Jack’s dismissal, was joined by his Auckland U19 colleague, Nikith – our total 233/7 and only 25 ball remaining. Wonderfully composed and at ease, virtually every ball was scored off – impossible singles were scampered, schoolboy tippeny runs stuff. Twos, even threes, stolen when, earlier only singles had been taken. But not just tap and go – both youngsters hit some booming drives – 4s and even a late cut went to the boundary. Fifty overs up and Nathan and Nikith’s stand had taken us to a very respectable 276/7. Howick Pak made a sound start in reply but relief came at 65 when L Winn was runout by Ollie Pringle. Bill Walsh and David Winn consolidated but the latter fell to Nikith – 107/2. Walsh battled on but fell regularly at the other end. Aniket ran out McGregor then Ganesh had Grobbelaar caught behind by Nathan without scoring – the first of 4 catches to Nathan, a great day for the youngster as he also had a hand in both run outs and didn’t concede a bye. Henry King took over from Ganesh – his 3 wickets all caught by Nathan. Tucker, their ‘keeper standing in for the injured Andy Morrison, was bowled by Ganesh for 0 and then Walsh was 8th out at 136 bowled by Aniket and the last two wickets fell soon after. A much better effort, well done Flynn on debut as Skipper! Craig’s photos tell the story better than words:

Andy Lane – a commanding 63, some utterly superb shots including, right, this on drive for 6 to bring up his 50

Ollie Pringle – also in commanding touch, run out for 94 – he deserved a ton!

Jack Parsons 31 off 30 balls Nathan Robinson – 26* off 23 balls

Nathan – two shots of him in full flow!

Nathan and Nikith – their unbroken 8th wicket partnership of 43 off just 25 balls was a joy to behold!

And Nikith’s 26* off 16 balls – they ran Howick Pak ragged in those last 4 overs!

Ganesh on the left and Henry King bowling. Ganesh’s dismissal of Grobbelaar first ball he faced was crucial and Henry return of 3/25 was his best of the season so far.

Nikith (left) and Aniket weaving spells – with drier wickets in Feb./March spin will be crucial to success

Last wicket falls – Parnell has won! Many thanks to Craig Speakman for his quite superb photos. JEFF CROWE CUP – POINTS TABLE AFTER ROUND 5. ROUND 6. – 3.00pm PARNELL 105/6 (20) Olivia Lobb 51 (62), Clare Main 3/13 (4), Kennedy Caton 2/11 (2) TAKAPUNA 106/9 (19.4) Kennedy Caton 29* (33), Shriya Naidu 3/24 (4), Renee Macmillan 2/16 (4), Wilmari Pretorious 2/17 (4) RESULT: TAKAPUNA WON BY 1 WICKET

Having won all of Rounds 3, 4 and 5, hopes were high for a first time win over Takapuna and it so nearly was achieved. Olivia set the ball rolling with a superb 51 and our bowlers responded well capturing Takapuna’s wickets regularly – 5/1, 19/2, 22/3, and, at 24/4 it was looking good. Roz McNeill then dug in with her Skipper, Mains, but the latter was run out at 41 and Renee had Kingi caught without addition – 41/6. Caton joined McNeill - a stand, but Shryia bowled McNeill – 62/7 – and at 72 was bowled by Wilmari. Only 2 wickets needed for an historic win. But Caton was still there and Barnett was stubborn. Takapuna’s total grew, down to the penultimate over and Wilmari struck – she clean bowled Barnett – 101/9 – A BREATHLESS HUSH …… SIX TO WIN AND THE LAST WOMAN IN ……..!!!! Last over - but it was not to be – Caton and no. 11, McGhee-Turnock held their nerve, the runs were scored and Takapuna won by 1 wicket. But it was so close ……!

Olivia – 29* & 51 Shryia – 1/14 & 3/24 Wilmari – 2/17 vs Takapuna

Rather sadly, because of the Interprovincial programe, our Women’s Premier Team have no games these next two weekends. Round 7 of the Pearl Dawson Trophy is on 13 February when they meet Top of the Table Howick Pakuranga at 11 am and Cornwall at 3pm – both games at Lloyd Elsmore Park.

You Are Never Too Old!

Last month, at our Reunion Lunch, mention was made that David Moir, rising 80, is still umpiring in Dunedin. Now news comes from Sydney (via Ronald Cardwell and Bill Francis) that AG (Arthur) Watson, 80 years old, last Saturday stood in his 800th game of Premier Cricket. The match was Fairfield CC vs North Sydney CC at Rosedale Oval, Warwick Farm – see clip below from Sydney’s Daily Telegraph:

80 year old Arthur Watson officiating Rosedale Oval – great setting for a club match. Ronald mentions that Fairfield’s 4th wicket had just fallen – caught – batsman walked, Arthur, untroubled!

Holiday Snaps We Were Told to “See the Country” For a few glorious weeks many of us escaped from Auckland to enjoy the countryside. Covid has meant no UK lads tackling the Tongariro Crossing or braving the waters of the Whakapapa and Wanganui Rivers. For your Editor life in the King Country was busy – in addition to family we hosted many visitors some of whom will be recognised:

Your Editor and Pete Legget taking a dip in the Wanganui River. Pete, from Scotland, came to play for Parnell in 2014. Returning with fiancée Johanna (Jojo) Brown, they work here, have residency and Pete competes in Iron Man contests. Pete has done the Taupo Iron Man and is presently training for Wanaka.

A familiar face on the braai and he even gave a tennis lesson

Quoits (wee Katie seems to have a certain advantage) And cricket by the Pavilion

Down at the River – the confluence of the Whakapapa and Wanganui Rivers:

Trotty, Pete Hickman and Bryan jnr cooling off Pete Legget - warmer than in the Scottish Highlands

Quoits (wee Katie given a considerable advantage!) And cricket in front of the Pavilion

Card sharps took things seriously Others relaxed and enjoyed the Australia vs India Tests

Meantime, Pete and Jojo headed for the hills – first, White Water Rafting on the Tongariro River:

Then the Tongariro Crossing:

Plus some Cycling:

Once at the bach your Editor stayed put but many, including a number from Parnell, visited. And. whilst some were most energetic others, thanks to Sky, watched the antics at the Sydney CG and the Gabba with interest!
