The weather for the first few days of practice was cold and rainy, but the water was heated. The dressing rooms were neat and well taken care of (by women attendants, much to the embar- rassment of our boys). The competition was keen and the field large and varied. Each event re- quired heats, semi-finals, and finals. In some of the events there were as many as 45 nations entered. We raced at 8:30 in the morning and again at 8:00 that same evening. We had a splendid group of boys, cooperative and eager and able, as the results showed. Every Olympic record was shattered during the progress of the meet. The US team won six out of eight Matt Mann Michael Peppe and diving events and lost the other two Coach of Swimming Coach of Diving by a whisker. 124 in this dual capacity and gave unstint- ingly of his time. A great deal of credit must be given to T. Nelson Metcalf, Administration Chairman, Jim Simms of the Transpor- tation Committee, Charles Ornstein of the Food and Housing Committee, and all other committeemen who were in- strumental in adding to the comfort of the members. The Finnish people were most coop- erative and were always ready and will- ling to do anything for us. We were housed in the Nurses' , which is a large modern elevator-serviced building. Its spacious auditorium was used several times weekly to show very fine movies to the competitors. In the short time we were in Helsinki the entire team-and this includes Ed Aspinall, Dick Papeng.uth and myself- Divers divers watch divers diving grew very fond of Finland and its peo- ple' and we will always carry very pleas- ant memories of the 1952 Olympic Games.
