PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — As members of the U.S. Air Force, we are called upon to identify problems and make improvements wherever possible. To borrow a phrase from recent pop culture, we like to do things “harder, better, faster, stronger.” The 16th and 380th Space Control Squadrons recently personified that phrase by significantly increasing the capacity of its defensive counterspace operations to directly support combat operations in Southwest Asia. By definition, DCS operations are conducted to “preserve United States/friendly ability to exploit space to its advantage via active and passive actions to protect friendly space-related capa- bilities from enemy attack or interference” (Air Force Doctrine Document 2-2.1). Ever since the 16th and 380th SPCS began DCS operations in 2007 with Operation Silent Sentry, the demand for DCS capabilities has grown rapidly. In response to the increased demand, the 16th and 380th were tasked in 2010 to deploy, set up, and integrate a new DCS capability into Operation Silent Sentry’s existing DCS mission. In concert with multiple base agencies, program offices, and government contractors, the and 379th Expeditionary Wing worked together to fulfill the important tasking. As Total Force partners who have been continuously deployed together since 2007, the 16th and 380th squadrons were uniquely postured to meet this challenge. In late 2010, unit personnel at Peterson Air Force Base be-

CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN AIR FORCE STATION, Colo. — You probably see one at some point during your day — the 21st Space Wing has many of them — the venerable security container. These containers must be approved by the General Services Administration and are the only authorized way to store classified information. Keeping a security container maintained and certified is typically a unit responsibility, and the bills can add up quickly. An inspection using a contractor from downtown costs about $500 per container. Each of these containers may contain one or more locks and must be inspected by a GSA-certified inspec- tor annually. The 721st Mission Support Group Civil Engineer Division has invested in tooling and training to perform these inspections as an in-house activity by the lock shop. Technicians were trained and equipped to become GSA-certified security container maintainers and inspectors. This consisted of four weeks of private GSA-certified schoolhouse training and a small investment in tools, including drill bits and a tool required for miniature locking mechanisms associated with these certified containers. This in-house capacity has saved tenant units and the 721st

WASHINGTON — On behalf of Air Force personnel around the globe, Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley accepted five of the top Combined Federal Campaign awards May 2 at a ceremony in the Pentagon. “This year, Airmen pledged over $2.3 million,” said Donley. “Over half of our workforce participated, with an average gift of $460.” The Air Force’s generosity earned it the CFC’s Summit Award, Participation Award, Million Dollar Circle Award, Honor Award and the Department of Defense Outstanding Large Campaign Award. This campaign marks the 50th anniver- sary for the CFC. “It’s an important reminder of how fortunate we are and the importance of sharing this good fortune with our neigh- bors,” Donley said. “Our Air Force set new goals this year, raising over $90,000 more than last year, which is 129 percent of our goal.” Louis Torchia, the director of the DOD Voluntary Campaign Management Office, was there to present Donley with the DOD (U.S. Air Force photo/Scott M. PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The focus of the Warrior Games has always been the wounded warriors who are competing, but they’re not the only warriors par- ticipating in the popular event. Military volunteers from throughout the area flocked to the games April 29 — May 5 to support their wounded brethren, so many, in fact, that there weren’t enough spaces for all of them. “We had a tremendous turnout of volunteers this year,” said Rich Cardillo, Warrior Games volunteer coordinator. “Unfortunately, I can’t use everybody.” Cardillo said volunteer numbers for the Warrior Games have exploded since the first games in 2010, with 400 people volunteering this year, approximately half of them military members. Cardillo said the games couldn’t happen without them. “An event like this is impossible to execute without vol- unteers,” he said. “Some have a vested interest. They have family members who came home from the conflict wounded, and they just want to repay in some fashion and they do it through volunteering.” Tech. Sgt. Melissa Simpson, 21st Aerospace Medicine Squadron, volunteered at the shooting and archery events this year.
