Spread the News: ALL ARE WELCOME IN THIS PLACE Invite Your Friends to the RCIA

This year’s St. Raymond candidate and family at Holy Name Cathedral the Rite of Election.

One of the hallmarks of the Catholic Church is that we are people-on-mission. The Good News (of God’s active, loving presence in our lives) is not ours to hoard. Rather, the Spirit of God compels to share it! Therefore, we ask you, the Church of St. Raymond, to think of people you know (a neighbor, a co-worker, a friend) who might be at a place in their lives where they are searching for something “more.” We encourage you to reach out and invite these people to consider exploring the Catholic faith here at St. Raymond’s.

We have a wonderful group of parishioners who will accompany these men and women on a journey of exploring God’s call in their lives. For further information about the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), please call or email Deacon Dave Babczak (847-253-8600, [email protected]).

Our meetings are held on Monday evenings beginning in mid-September.

Emmaus Walk Grief Support Group

Emmaus Walk, a grief support group for adults grieving the loss of a loved one, will begin on Monday, October 7th at 7:00 pm in the Living Room of the Parish Ministry Center and continue weekly through Monday, November 25th (except for Monday, Nov.4th).

Any adult grieving the loss of a significant person in their lives ---family member, partner, or friend ---is invited and welcome to participate whether the loss is recent or one in the past that has not been healed. During our time together various elements of the grief journey will be explored through education, discussion, sharing and prayer in a safe and confidential setting.

Please contact Sr. Val, group facilitator, at 847-253-8600 x 143 or [email protected] to register or with any questions. All are welcome!

Through Our Alms We Touch the World Beds for Mugana Hospital

Fr. Gilbert has told us about Mugana Hospital, a health facility in an area close to his community in Tanzania. Mugana Hospital serves the poor people of the Kagera region in Tanzania. They are currently facing several challenges, including the lack of sufficient space to accommodate expectant and new mothers. The current building can accommodate only 29 mothers, but they sometimes have up to 50 mothers admitted to safely deliver their babies. Therefore, some of the expectant or new mothers have to lie on the floor in the corridor, sometimes even without a mattress. New mothers frequently stay at the hospital for a week or more, to assure their new babies will have the best chance to survive. A new maternity building is in the process of being built, but the hospital is in need of beds. They will need 50 beds for the new building. The alms during September 28ththrough October 13th will be used to help Mugana Hospital supply the beds and bedding for the new maternity building. Sr. Inviolata Temba from the hospital has told us that the cost for one complete bed consists of the following:

Hospital bed $ 70 Mattress $ 50 Mattress cover $ 25 Blanket $ 25 Bed sheets $ 50 Pillow & case $ 15 One complete bed $235

Any amount contributed will be very much appreciated and will be used toward completing a whole bed for the Mugana Hospital maternity building. Please use the green alms envelope. Make any check out to St. Raymond’s, and put in the memo section, Beds – Mugana. Fr. Gilbert will assure the money gets Mugana Hospital and is used for beds in the new maternity building.

The St. Raymond Alms Committee searches out organizations which reflect the needs of the “least of our brothers.” All are invited to join our committee which identifies and presents organizations for consideration in weekly alms. If interested in being part of the Alms Committee, please contact the parish office at 847-253-8600.

HELP PREVENT CONSUMER FRAUD Some of you are aware that fraudulent emails were sent to a number of parishioners which imitated a message com- ing from Father Scott. If someone responded to the email, they were asked to make a gift card purchase, and then to send the gift card codes to the fraudulent sender. The scam artist was then able to make purchases with the gift cards. It is more important then ever to be aware of the fraud that technology makes possible. Always remember to follow basic safety precautions. 1. We are grateful for your generosity in supporting St. Raymond. But, if you wish to donate to the parish, please make all donations directly to St. Raymond Parish. The only gift cards that benefit the parish are those that can be obtained in the parish office. No one should ask you to put purchases for parish ministries on your personal credit card. All ministry related purchases should be made through parish accounts. No one should normally expect to be reimbursed by the parish for something unless you have asked for it to be approved prior to the purchase. 2. Never give credit card or gift card information to anyone by email, unless you are making a purchase as part of an account that you have set up with a seller. 3. Never provide personal data such as social security number or credit care information to anyone over the phone unless you personally know and trust the individual on the other end of the line. 4. If you think that an email might not be genuine, it probably is not. Always contact the sender to verify that the email is authentic. Use the Block Call function on your cell phone to prevent unrecognized callers from calling again. Also be aware that the National Advertising Initiative Consumer Opt Out website allows you to opt out of unwanted contacts from advertisers.

HOMILY FOR THE MASS OF INSTALLATION AS PASTOR FR. SCOTT HEBDEN

The people of St. Raymond installed me in my first week at all the masses. I feel that I have been here for much longer than 3 months because the warmth and openness of everyone I encounter has made it so easy to form relationships.

Now we celebrate the installation required by canon law. St. Raymond was a canon lawyer who left canon law to join the Dominicans and become a preacher of the gospel. We celebrate tonight on the feast of St. John Chrysostom, the patron of preachers. These two great preachers pray for us as the Scriptures for this feast give us the vision for our mission as a community of the People of God.

The Letter to the Ephesians - Paul’s great letter on the Church - gives us the foundation of our mission - UNITY. We are called to be united as God is a unity of persons. The Second Vatican Council tells us that the Church is sacrament of union with God and the unity of humanity.

So, as Paul says, let us begin this mission together as a community that is bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. One body and one Spirit, as we are also called to one hope; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

I ask you to pray for St. Raymond to be united in a common vision and a common passion that the love and of God be known in our community.

Then Ephesians goes on to talk about where vision for ministry comes from. There is only source of authentic vision for mission - THE WORD OF GOD.

Jesus asks his disciples - If you do not understand the parable of the sower - how will you understand any of the parables? If you do not understand that the Word of God is the source of power for your mission, then all the other parables about doing the mission will be useless to you.

Ephesians tells us the primary way that grace is given to us by Christ. He gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers.

Here are all the dimensions of the power of the Word of God.

The apostolic word - laying the foundations of faith and defending orthodoxy. We will hear the apostolic word later on when I recite the profession of faith and the oath of fidelity.

The prophetic word - calling us to new creative vision. We are blessed with Pope Francis who gives us the authentic prophetic word we need to hear. Francis himself tells us that his prophetic word comes from the Second Vatican Council. I wanted to come to St. Raymond because of the desire of this community to be a parish of the Second Vatican Council. The only way forward in our mission in the 21st century is to return again and again to the vision of Vatican II - a prophetic vision for the universal Church as world began to enter the process of globalization.

Then there is the evangelistic word - inviting people to the fullness of life through faith in Christ. This evangelistic word has to be spoken by everyone in the community.

Listen to Pope Francis: “Today, as the church seeks to experience a profound transformation, there is a kind of preaching which falls to each of us as a daily responsibility. It has to do with bringing the Gospel to the people we meet, whether they be our neighbors or complete strangers. This preaching takes place through conversation when people share their hopes and concerns, and experience being listened to and understood., and they know through us that their situation is important to God.”

As we set out on this mission together, we pray that everyone in the community will be inspired to be bring the gospel to others.

Then there is the pastoral word - encouraging and supporting one another in our growth in the faith. Fr. Gilbert has the gift of the pastoral word. All of us are called to build one another up by reminding one another of our value, and by bearing one another’s burdens. So let us be a community in which the pastoral word is spoken often to one another.

Last but not least, there is the teaching word - giving people the vision of the history of salvation - the Christian vision of the world that we need to move forward with our mission.

I was blessed for many years to be a teacher at Mundelein Seminary. Many of the people here tonight are friends, former colleagues, former students that I have been blessed to know through that ministry of teaching.

Why does Paul say that all these gifts of the Word exist? to equip the holy ones - the People of God - for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God

My presence here as pastor is not to do all the ministry. My presence here is to serve you and to support you as you carry out the mission. That was the transforming vision of Vatican II. It is not the clergy that are on the front line of mission. It is you - the community of the people of God.

Evangelization in the year 2019, in the 21st century, will not be accomplished by saying “the Church teaches” and giving people a copy of the Catechism. In our time, evangelization has to be done through personal relationship, personal witness, personal invitation.

Here in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago are all the different sorts of people that Jesus talks about in the parable of the sower. Jesus imagines people as different types of soil. The of the word of God lands on different types of soil.

There are people around us who struggle to hear anything the church says. Some are alienated from the church because they feel that the church lacks credibility. Some because they have been hurt by people in the church in someway. Others say: I am spiritual but not religious. I don’t trust any institution.

Then there are people who have weak Christian roots. These are people who have grown up in a Christian environment. They might have grown up in a Catholic parish. They might have received first communion. But they never developed any real Christian roots. They received the word with joy. They had a party for their first communion or confirmation. But they never really learned how to pray. So when life gets difficult, they do not know how to turn to their faith for support.

Pope John Paul II talked about the new evangelization - bringing the gospel to people who have been exposed to Christianity but never really absorbed it. People who think they know what the Christian life is about, but have not really experienced it.

Then, Jesus says, there are people who lose their focus on what is truly meaningful because of the pressures of life. They are the people who hear the word, but worldly anxiety, the lure of riches, and the craving for other things intrude and choke the word, and it bears no fruit. People who say - I have to work - I have a game - I have errands to do - I don’t have time for Church.

All these people need something. They need to meet someone who inspires with a quality of personality, a character in relating to others, a joy in living life, a peace in the midst of difficulty - someone who will show them that there is a way to have a more meaningful life. They need to meet the people who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit thirty and sixty and a hundredfold. Not thirty, sixty or a hundred Facebook friends. People whose lives are changed by the power of the Spirit working through us.

Jesus is not a statistician. He doesn’t give the disciples a pie chart that shows them how many people fall into each category. But research that has been done in our day does to figure out those things. I will only give you one statistic.

In the Northwest suburbs, only 5% of the people fall into the category of rich soil. That means 95% of the people are waiting for 5% of the people to help them grow into a more meaningful life. That is what Jesus means when he says that the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. And he asks us to go out as witnesses to the gospel.

We are here tonight because we believe in the power of the Word of God. It is the power of the Word that makes Jesus present among us in the Eucharist. The Eucharist makes us into the Body of Christ, so that we can bring the power of the Word of God to people who need faith, hope and love in their lives.

This is our mission together. I am very happy to be blessed to collaborate with you in this important work.

So let us ask God to help us to be what the Scriptures tonight call us to be... Let us live in a manner worthy of the calling we have received. Let us bear with one another through love. Let us strive to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Let us live the truth in love.

One body and one Spirit, as we are also called to one hope; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over us and through us and in us.

The Blessing of the Pets Pets from both St Raymond Catholic Church and St Mark Lutheran Church will gather together in order to receive an “Ecumenical Pet Blessing” on Saturday, October 5th at 10:00 AM Gathering outside the entrance of the St Raymond Gym (corner of Lincoln Street and I-Oka Ave.) All pets are welcome!

Tuesday AM Scripture October 1, 8, 15, 29 and November 5 Note: No meeting on Oct. 22 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. in the Community Room Dee Peppard, BVM.

“If You Only Knew What God Is Offering” Gospel Characters

“If you only knew the gift that God is offering” is what Jesus said to the Samaritan woman at the well. And the Risen Jesus says that very same thing to each of us.

This time we won’t take a particular book of scripture - we’ve done so many of them over the years. Instead, we’ll look more deeply and imaginatively at some of the characters who encounter Jesus in the gospels. Among others, we’ll include: Mary, the mother of Jesus; Peter; Mary Magdalene; the man born blind; the Samaritan woman at the well; Zacchaeus, the tax collector; Martha, Mary and their brother, Lazarus; Doubting Thomas; the woman-bent- double. We’ll also look at what Jesus’ experience at the Transfiguration (in Luke’s gospel) might have meant to him. All are welcome! Please join us.

BE A FLU FIGHTER!

Through the courtesy of Walgreen’s “Get A Shot – Give A Shot” Outreach Program, flu shots for adults and children 10 years of age and older will again be available on Sunday, October 13th from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm in the Community Room. Immunizations will be given at no cost to insured patrons and at little to no cost for the uninsured. By getting a flu shot and taking care of your health needs this winter, you are also providing an immuniza- tion for a child in a developing country. To date, 50 million life-saving vaccines have been given to children around the world. Be a flu fighter and help a child!

Mary McKeon Praying with Mary, Untier of Knots

A Suggested Donation of $5.00 or more is appreciated

Once again St. Raymond’s will be offering our “Gathering of Women.” All women of the parish are invited to join us on October 19 for a prayer service in church, breakfast, good company and a wonderful presenter, Mary McKeon. We begin with prayer at 8:00 AM, followed by the presentation at 9:00, and end at 11:00 AM.

We all have challenges, “knots” in our lives that can seem impossible to deal with. In this devotion, we entrust these knots to Mary and allow her to untie them and to bring us to her Son, Jesus. During the morning of re- flection, we will learn about, and pray with, “Mary, Untier of Knots.” This image is a favorite of our current Pope Francis.

Mary McKeon is a ministry staff member of Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House in Barrington. She is a spiritual director and coordinator of women’s ministry. Mary is a graduate of Marquette University. She taught school in Milwaukee’s inner city before moving to Washington, DC to work for the United States Senate. She and her late husband have a daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter, and three grandsons who are the joy of her life. Mary received her training as a spiritual/ retreat director at the Jesuits’ Manresa Retreat House in Bloomfield Hills, MI., where she served on the ministry team and became their first Director of Women’s Ministry. In 2014, Mary was the second person to be honored with Manresa’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Please plan on joining us – you’ll be glad you did!

St. Raymond SPRED Program Religious Education for Adults with Special Needs

Would you like to experience the joy of sharing your faith and friendship within a program designed for adults with developmental needs? St. Raymond’s SPRED program is looking for a few additional “helpers” to assist our special Friends with planned activities, prayer sessions, refreshments, and more. No prior experience is necessary – just your willingness to share your time, friendship and faith with our SPRED Friends.

SPRED meets bi-weekly on Saturday mornings (9 am-11 am) from October through April for a total of 12 sessions. This includes a SPRED Christmas Mass in early December and concludes with a Spring Breakfast in April. Or perhaps you might consider being a substitute “helper” if additional assistance is needed for certain sessions. In either case, you’ll discover that your heart and faith will be touched in wonderful and unexpected ways!

RESCUE/RECYCLE RELIGIOUS ITEMS MINISTRY Have you wondered what to do with religious items that you no longer want to use or keep? There is a “Rescue and Recycle Program for Religious Items” ministry at St. Raymond's Parish. This ministry was started by Ruth Hauswirth as a resource for people to be able to re- purpose their religious items that are no longer being used . Thousands of items have been donated and re- purposed. All items are treated in a respectful manner by going to those people or organizations who would again have use for them. The Rescue Ministry will take any type of Catholic religious items: religious statues in any condition, pictures, medals, rosaries, crucifix’s, holy cards, blessed candles, scapulars, religious books, holy water/holy oils, Saint relics, Catholic books, cd's or dvd's, and unwanted jewelry (beads and jewelry will be re-purposed and made into rosaries). Items that are broken but fixable are also accepted but we cannot ac- cept Mass or greeting cards from religious organiza- tions. Items that you would like to donate can be brought to the PMC. If you have questions or need information please contact Ruth Hauswirth by 224-558-3618 or at [email protected].
