From the Editor

Time flies so fast that the Association of Special Libraries of the (ASLP) is now celebrating its 60th Anniversary with the theme ASLP@60: Globally Moving Forward". If we still remember, the ASLP was established on January 16, 1954.

Striving for excellence not only locally but internationally is the ASLP's vision when we celebrate our golden anniversary last 2004 which dubbed as ASLP@50: On the Road to Global Excellence. Indeed, the ASLP is slowly attaining this vision through the commitment of each member, partner organizations, government agencies, library associations, and private individuals. Proofs of these are the activities in partnership with the various international organizations these past few years. But the ASLP won't stop in fulfilling this vision and ready to take on the challenges. Now that we are celebrating our 60th anniversary, we will pursue our incessant efforts in making our name known internationally. We will carry on with our commitment to advance the standards of the librarians professionally by engaging them through activities and learning that they may apply for their own improvement.

Our 60th Souvenir Program is a memorabilia of all the activities undertaken for the past 60 years of ASLP's existence. Incumbent Board will be given a printed and CD version copy of this. CD version includes an additional audio-visual presentation that contains the compilation of the ASLP’s photos taken during the activities.

This will not be possible without the help of everyone. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to those who shared their time and efforts in helping us to finish the souvenir program. To all former ASLP Presidents and Officers for submitting their activities and giving us their photos, Ms. Susie Manhit for her unfaltering support through lending us a copy of her previous souvenir program, Ms. Milagros Santos-Ong for the assistance in the completion and printing of this souvenir program.

OFFICE OF THE CHIEF JUSTICE SUPREME COURT

MESSAGE

I join the members and officers of the Association of Special Libraries of the Philippines (ASLP) in celebrating 60 years of its meaningful existence. The special libraries are the salient knowledge resource and the silent moving force of organizations needing specialized kinds of information. The law schools and the courts, in particular, fully benefit from the services that the special libraries provide in support of legal study and research, records keeping, and other important documentation requirements. I fervently wish for the ALSP's continued success in its mission to uphold the dignity of the library profession and espouse the highest standards of professional ethics in the field. As it globally moves forward to meet the challenges of the times, may the ALSP further fuel the drive of special libraries to become highly relevant, reliable, and effective for its various clienteles in the many years to come. Congratulations to the ASLP on its anniversary. Mabuhay at nawa'y patuloy na magtagumpay and inyong mabubuting hangarin!

Republic of the Philippines Professional Regulation Commission Manila

MESSAGE

On behalf of the Professional Regulatory Board for Librarians, I congratulate the officers and members of the Association of Special Libraries of the Philippines (ASLP) on its founding anniversary celebration with the theme “ASLP @ 60 : Globally Moving Forward”. It is indeed commendable that the past sixty years has been marked with enthusiasm, diligence and hard work to continue realizing the Association’s vision and mission.

Reaching 60 years as an organization manifests the involvement of deeply committed librarians who have continuously kept the torch burning – facing challenges and obstacles as well as reaping laurels for the profession and its practitioners together.

The world has grown smaller and connecting offshore has become faster. As global participants in the exchange of ideas and delivery of goods and services, the theme is very timely. Your presence and involvement as an organization to globally move forward assures its members and information professionals in other fields that you are ready, willing and eager to meet the challenges and opportunities for growth that lie ahead.

I wish you all the best for your future endeavors.

Onward, ASLP!

YOLANDA C. GRANDA Chairperson Professional Regulatory Board for Librarians January 2014

NATIONAL LIBRARY OF THE PHILIPPINES T.M. Kalaw St. Ermita, Manila 1000 Philippines

Message

On behalf of the National Library of the Philippines (NLP) and the National Committee on Libraries and Information Services (NCLIS), it is with great pleasure and honor to greet with felicitations the librarians, libraries and other stakeholders who are in the forefront of making the successful existence of the Association of Special Libraries of the Philippines (ASLP) for sixty (60) wonderful years.

The history of special libraries can be traced back to institutions who saw the need to have information specialists and their resources to be accessible to each and every employee within the organization for their information needs. Now, its clientele has moved from their employees to various researchers both locally and internationally. Through its theme, “ASLP @ 60: Globally Moving Forward”, ASLP brings to mind that the information landscape within which special libraries exist continues to evolve rapidly, shaped by key forces such as increased emphasis upon support not only to its institution but also to various researchers and online service development.

For six long decades, the ASLP has paved the way for special libraries to convene together to build a bigger knowledge base for its clientele here in the Philippines and in abroad by promoting the collection, organization and dissemination of information on research and library work. It continues to promote access of its member libraries’ recorded knowledge in support of research, scholarships and outreach services as well.

We wish your celebration a success, and may you continue to encourage more members to join in the quest to uplift our beloved profession towards a global stature. Again, congratulations to ASLP on your foundation anniversary.

Antonio M. Santos Director (NLP) / Head (NCLIS)

M E S S A G E

It gives me great pleasure to greet my colleagues, the officers and members of the Association of Special Libraries of the Philippines (ASLP), as you celebrate your 60th founding anniversary. Let me also take this opportunity to congratulate the awardees who will be conferred on this very special occasion. On behalf of the Philippine Librarians Association, Inc (PLAI), I wish you a meaningful celebration and success in your future endeavors, as you move forward globally to another decade and beyond.

The Association and its officers, both past and present, have contributed so much in the development and improvement of special libraries nationwide. A good number have also been active in the international scene, presenting papers, creating partnerships, and even actively participating in the affairs of several international associations. But as you continue to do so, do not forget those who are lagging behind in terms of skills and resources. Conduct more researches that will benefit not only your libraries and the institutions you belong to, but the other types of library as well. Pursue further alignment and cooperation, not only with international library associations, but more so with your mother organization. As such, I would like to invite our competent and dynamic special library professionals to become active in PLAI so that, together, we can make a positive transforming difference in our profession.

Mabuhay!

MESSAGE

The Association of Special Libraries of the Philippines (ASLP) is now 60 years old. This started during the inaugural meeting of government librarians held on January 16, 1954 at the D & E Coffee Shop in Escolta St., Binondo, Manila. It has now grown to include both government and private librarians working in special libraries.

First and foremost, I wish to greet and congratulate every member of the ASLP for the past sixty years who have worked together to achieve the ASLP’s mission and vision and to achieve its prominent status in the library community both here in the Philippines and abroad.

ASLP has defined or has set the direction of the activities it aimed to achieve. For its 50th Anniversary in 2004, the theme: “ASLP @50: On Road to Global Excellence,” the direction was Global. In 2005, the ASLP started to go global with the Singapore - Kuala Lumpur Library Study Visit, October 9-13, 2005. ASLP can boost that it is the only Library Association in the Philippines who was able to sent its entire Board to visit seventeen (17) libraries and museums in Germany. Thanks to the foreign institutions and professionals who believe in the ASLP and has given full support.

ASLP is not only represented in international conferences such as ALA, ALLA, CONSAL, and SLA, but its officers and members are resource speakers. Linkages with other countries started in 2012 when a partnership was established with the Special Libraries Association-Asian Chapter and in 2013, the 3rd ICOSAL was held in Manila with participants and resource speakers came from Asia, Canada, Germany and .

“ASLP at 60: Globally Moving Forward,” our 60th Anniversary theme has shown its continuous commitment to attain global recognition for the special libraries in the Philippines. It has gained the respect and esteem from our foreign counterparts when one of our former President was elected as President of SLA-Asian Chapter. The very first Philippine library association to achieve.

ASLP has been one happy family working together for the ASLP and for the advancement of special librarianship. Former Presidents, Officers and members’ contribution to the ASLP and its activities are remarkable. For this Anniversary celebration the composition of the 60th Anniversary Committee are all ASLP Presidents. Our dear Ms. Angelica Cabanero, former two times President, is travelling all the way from the United States to celebrate this occasion with us.

Long live the ASLP. Mabuhay

MESSAGE

I wish to convey my sincere congratulations to all the founding and active members on the occasion of the 60th Diamond Anniversary of the Association of Special Libraries of the Philippines (ASLP).

ASLP is now known internationally: from CONSAL to IFLA, from SLA to ALLA. One of the objectives of the association is “to establish, maintain and strengthen partnerships and linkages with institutions and organizations within the Philippines and abroad for the welfare and benefit of special libraries and librarians of the Philippines.” It is in this objective that ASLP has started to expand globally in terms of professional networking. One of which is the co-hosting of the 3rd ICoASL in Manila. ASLP is thankful to SLA-Asian Chapter for partnering with us.

This year’s anniversary theme: “ASLP at 60: Globally Moving Forward,” is a testament of how ASLP emerged to become an active and globally competitive association. ASLP reached this achievement because of its committed officers and loyal members. This is what we should be celebrating for. The tireless contributions of our predecessors are noteworthy of why and how ASLP became one of the esteemed associations being looked up today. We all owe the praises and achievements from them. Moving forward means that we also need to hurdle the challenges. These challenges will define the way we handle great situations. If we surpassed all the challenges, then we can move forward with great satisfaction, honor and dignity.

To everyone who made 2013 a great year for ASLP, mabuhay tayong lahat!

Maraming salamat po.

Yours truly,

Joseph M. Yap President

MESSAGE

The Association of the Special Libraries of the Philippines (ASLP) reaches another milestone as it celebrates its 60th anniversary with the theme “ASLP at 60: Globally Moving Forward.” Through the years, the ASLP has been working towards this vision - a vision to be known not only in the country but also in the international arena of library profession. The active participation of the Association’s officers and members to various international conferences and seminars has contributed a lot for the Association to reach its present status.

I am indeed very grateful and honoured to be a part of this prestigious group of professional librarians. It had opened a lot of good opportunities, experiences and exposures in the fascinating world of librarianship. Likewise, it also gave me the chance to meet and work with several prominent people in the field of library and information science, both locally and internationally.

I would like to commend the ASLP 60th Anniversary Committee led by Mrs. Milagros Santos- Ong for making the celebration successful and momentous. To all who had supported and helped to make all these things possible, my sincerest gratitude to all of you.

Lastly, I would like to congratulate the ASLP, its officers and members, past and present, for making the Association what it is known today. As it enters its 60th year, the ASLP will continue to strive and work together towards a certain goal - a goal to continue move globally forward.

Soar high ASLP!

ASLP Through its 60th year

The Association of Special Libraries of the Philippines, Inc. (ASLP) started from the inaugural meeting held at the D & E Coffee Shop in Escolta St., Binondo, Manila way back January 16, 1954. From a membership composed of only government agency librarians, it has grown to include also librarians working in special libraries both in academic and private institution.

The first elected president was Ms. Consuelo M. Damaso, a Librarian of the U.P Institute of Public Administration. Since then, fifty-three (53) presidents followed to lead the association.

ASLP has been recognized as the second oldest national library association in the Philippines. It was also making globally its name.

The ASLP continued to work harder in fulfilling its mission and vision and upheld its constitution and by-laws. There were several activities undertaken by the ASLP from 1954 until today. Among them were semi-annual conferences, celebration of 20th, 25th, 40th, and 50th anniversaries, the congresses, and the very first recently concluded international event in partnership with the Special Libraries Association (SLA)-Asian Chapter held last April 2013. This event is a major highlights in the history of ASLP.
