The diverse superfamily Oestroidea with more than 15 000 known species includes among others blow flies, flesh flies, bot flies and the diverse tachinid flies. Oestroidea exhibit strikingly divergent morphological and ecological traits, but even with a variety of data sources and inferences there is no consensus on the relationships among major Oestroidea lineages. Phylogenomic inferences derived from targeted enrichment of ultraconserved elements or UCEs have emerged as a promising method for resolving difficult phylogenetic problems at varying timescales. To reconstruct phylogenetic relationships among families of Oestroidea, we obtained UCE loci exclusively derived from the transcribed portion of the genome, making them suitable for larger and more integrative phylogenomic studies using other genomic and transcriptomic resources. We analysed datasets containing 37–2077 UCE loci from 98 representatives of all oestroid families (except Ulurumyiidae and Mystacinobiidae) and seven calyptrate outgroups, with a total concatenated aligned length between 10 and 550 Mb. About 35% of the sampled taxa consisted of museum specimens (2–92 years old), of which 85% resulted in successful UCE enrichment. -

Identification keys for adults and eggs are elaborated, based on a series of new diagnostic features and supported by high resolution photographs for adults. The genus is shown to have its highest species richness in China and South Africa, with seven species recorded, followed by Mongolia, Senegal, and Ukraine, with six species recorded. Ultrastructure of Adult Gasterophilus Intestinalis (Diptera: Gasterophilidae) and Its Puparium

Salaeh2 Received: 12 June 2019 /Accepted: 2 December 2019 # African Association of Insect Scientists 2019 Abstract This research was conducted to identify the most common equine stomach bot fly by using light and scanning electron microscopy. Third instar larvae (n = 200) of Gasterophilus intestinalis were collected from stomach of slaughtered donkeys (Equus asinus) at Giza Zoo abattoir, Egypt, in July 2017 (the donkeys chosen were from Giza; Egypt). One hundred only were full mature 3rd instar larvae (the mature 3rd instar was active and has brown bands on its dorsal surface) which were incubated at 32 °C and 80–85% Relative Humidity (RH), for the development of adult. The following pupal parameters were recorded: prepupal period, number of pupated larvae, pupal period, and number of emerged adult and determination of adult sex ratio. Morphological description of pupae, puparium and adults were provided using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The length of prepupal duration was five days and about 90% of the collected G. intestinalis larvae successfully pupated with pupal duration lasting for 21–25 days prior to emergence of the adult stage. Adults sorted according to sex show a female to male ratio of 8:1 (i.e. 80 females to 10 males). The pupae of G. intestinalis were brown to black in color. The adult head, thorax, abdomen, legs and wings of male and female were morphologically described using light and SEM. -

This issue is brought to you during the Covid-19 pandemic, with many of you likely cooped up at home, with insect collections worldwide closed for business! Perhaps for this reason this issue is pretty heavy, not just with articles but with images. There were many submissions to the Flies are Amazing! section and the Dipterists Lairs! I hope you enjoy them! Just to touch on an error I made in the Fall issue’s introduction… In outlining the change to “Spring” and “Fall” issues, instead of April and October issues, I said “But rest assured, I WILL NOT produce Fall issues after 20 December! Nor Spring issues after 20 March!” But of course I meant no Spring issues after 20 June! Instead of hitting the end of spring, I used the beginning. Oh well… Thank you to everyone for sending in such interesting articles! I encourage all of you to consider contributing articles that may be of interest to the Diptera community, or for larger manuscripts, the Fly Times Supplement series.
