Biographical Note While Northern men’s basketball has developed the largest following of any sport on campus the athletic tradition at Northern includes much more than men’s basketball. Many All-Americans, hall-of-fame coaches, and national champions have walked the campus. As the school grew and developed, so did the athletic program. Northern has gone from a normal school with a pair of varsity sports playing high school teams to a university with fifteen school-sponsored sports playing teams all over the country. The athletic program which started in 1902 with men’s basketball and football has made additions as recently as 1997 with women’s soccer.1 Scope and Content The formats included in this collection are administrative records, advertisements, awards, flyers, media guides, photographs, posters, plaques, press releases, programs, score sheets, student athlete information sheets, uniforms and watches.
