The Family of Edward Lloyd (1815-1890), Publisher and Newspaper Baron Edward Lloyd, the well-known nineteenth century publisher and newspaper proprietor, was my great great grandfather. His role in bringing cheap literature to the masses, working to reduce or eliminate the Stamp Tax, and building a hugely successful newspaper empire through technological and marketing innovation, has been well documented by others (1-3). This article focuses on the great man’s private life and family, and addresses some of the issues which have been raised by these authors. Family lore has it that Edward Lloyd walked as a young man from Wales to London, where he started off delivering newspapers. In the words of my grandfather, F.N. Lloyd (Edward Lloyd’s grandson), “He and his brother were the sons of a yeoman farmer or small landowner near Betws-y-Coed and went to London as young men.” (4). We now know this was not the case. Edward was born in Thornton Heath, Surrey, on 16 February, 1815, (5) and christened a month later in Saint John the Baptist church, Croydon (6). His oldest brother, Thomas, was born in Church St, Hackney on 29 September, 1808, and christened that October in Saint Leonard’s, Shoreditch (7). Another brother, William Evan, was born in Finsbury on 19 March, 1810, and christened at Saint Luke’s Old Street in July of that year (8). Edward Lloyd’s Parents Their parents were Thomas Hughes Lloyd and Ann Berridge. They were married on 2nd December, 1807, in St Marylebone, Westminster, though he is recorded here (and elsewhere) as Thomas Hugh Lloyd, living in the Parish of St Mildred Poultry, in the City of London (9). -

In particular, it shows how changes in the primary audience for metropolitan popular culture necessitated dramatic shifts in the tale of serial killing and narratives of violence. Thus, by the nineteenth century, as the lower classes had become the main supporters of both traditional and new genres of entertainment in popular culture, their experience of and fears and anxieties about urban change became intertwined with myths about serial killing and reflected in a new character of the public nightmare, Sweeney Todd, the barber of Fleet Street, who set out to effectively depopulate the capital with his ghastly murder machine. -

The Children of the Night: Stoker’s Dreadful Reading and the Plot of Dracula Dick Collins [A graduate of Cambridge (Trinity), Dr. Collins has produced editions of two Penny Dreadfuls (The String of Pearls and Wagner the Were-wolf) with a third (The Necromancer) forthcoming. Retired, he lives in County Cork, Ireland.] My intention is to suggest that the plot of Dracula was modeled on the plot of The String of Pearls, the Penny Dreadful serial that created Sweeney Todd. I am not suggesting that Stoker deliberately or consciously “stole” the plot and “rewrote it” with “differences”; nor can I prove he had read it, let alone that he had it on the desk as he wrote. Instead I am making the altogether more ordinary claim that Stoker was familiar with the earlier book, and others like it; that the memory of it provided him with a basic framework of plot; and that, since a plot can only be acted out by characters, the framework he took from Pearls provided him with certain basic protagonists.1 Sweeney Todd and the critics The String of Pearls first appeared as a weekly serial in The People’s Periodical and Family Library, published by Edward Lloyd of Salisbury Square, off Fleet Street, in the City of London. The first episode came out on 21 November 1846, and the serial ran for eighteen weeks. With its poor print and lurid illustrations it was a typical Dreadful, though in writing a distinct cut above the rest. It introduced the monstrous Sweeney Todd, barber of Fleet Street. -

Born Frederick Valentine Digitisation Projects Harrison in 1876, he was an exuberant, Events & pugnacious character who combined a Exhibitions moderately successful career in the music hall Links with a passion for the popular penny stories and magazines of the Victorian age. Enquiries Throughout his life he collected and traded in these bloodthirsty tales of crime and adventure, always eager to share his knowledge and enthusiasm; he even gave lectures in Selfridge's Oxford Street store Barry Ono surrounded by examples from during a Hobbies Exhibition in 1936, and his collection, 1936.
