Billy Smith was voted the Wahoos most improved player last spring and he has con- tinued the improvement in 1983 as he leads the club in receptions. The top defensive player is Charles Mc- Daniel, one of the best young linebackers in the ACC. The sophomore from Fredericks- burg, VA, who is a nephew of Hootie Ingram, led the Cavs in tackles a year ago with 109 and paces the team in that category so far this season. Bon Mattes, who had four quarterback sacks in the first four games this season, is the top defensive lineman. Free safety Lester Lyles is also a mainstay of the Virginia de- fense as he led his team in tackles against both James Madison and N. C. State, and is third on the club in that category.
