Change Programme 2020-21

Durham Cathedral is a value-driven, outward- facing, Christian organisation which seeks to serve the needs of our community whilst supporting its transformation and resilience.

Our temporary closure due to Covid-19 gave us the opportunity to pause and reflect on the welcome we offer visitors and how we engage with them during their time with us. We’re proud of what we have achieved to date, but recognise there is more to be done in terms of inclusivity, access, and opportunities for participation.

The Cathedral is currently undertaking a change management programme to develop a strategy informed by our faith with people at its heart, and creates meaningful experiences across all our operations. We aim to transform and reimagine the way we work to ensure that all our visitor engagement is shaped by our Christian heritage and the community we serve. We hope to inspire, challenge, delight, and most importantly, involve them.

Our vision for change is to:

1. Organise ourselves around the three strategic objects of the new Cathedrals Measure 2. Restructure our largest financial risks 3. Work with increased collaboration, transparency and empathy 4. Do less, better 5. Invest in understanding our audiences and put them at the core of our mission 6. Be an agile and fit-for-purpose Senior Team 7. Welcome all people as pilgrims (Change Programme slides)

Map of the Diocese of Durham

Durham Cathedral & the Diocesan Priorities

Gathering representatives from every church together with our chaplains, schools representatives and members of the cathedral community, the Waymark conference was the beginning of a year-long process of conversation and prayer to reimagine our strategic priorities for our mission together as a Diocese.

In the months that followed we identified four ways God is calling us to strengthen our mission, service and presence as God’s people in the Diocese of Durham. How each church or context responds will vary depending on its local context, gifts and opportunities, with some elements developed together rather than in isolation. As the ‘mother church’ to the Diocese, Durham Cathedral has a special place in expressing and advancing this vision.

The four priorities are -

 Challenging Poverty by working together to address child and youth poverty, responding to isolation (particularly among the elderly) and responding to the needs and gifts of asylum seekers and refugees.

 Caring for God’s Creation by developing a shared Christian vision for how we care for the environment which engages everyone, promoting responsible consumption and behaviour and working together to challenge environmental indifference and injustice.

 Energising Growth by growing as churches of missionary disciples, increasing the number of people newly following Jesus and extending the reach and social impact of our congregations, communities and chaplaincies through discipleship, evangelism and service. Planting new congregations will be a significant element of this.

 Engaging with Children, Youth & Young Adults by developing pathways for more children to become lifelong disciples, resourcing young people for Mission and extending our engagement with 18-25 year olds.

Over the coming 4 years we intend to engage the Cathedral community in each of these endeavours by raising awareness (discipleship), responding practically (active mission) and (through wider collaboration) finding ways to support reform in our churches and wider society. Our Trustees will play an important part in supporting our clergy and lay leaders to understand how to do this as effectively and faithfully as possible.
