Newtown Action Alliance P.O. Box 3325 Newtown, Ct 06470 NEWTOWN ACTION ALLIANCE P.O. BOX 3325 NEWTOWN, CT 06470 January 12, 2021 Dear President-Elect Joe Biden, On behalf of the Newtown Action Alliance, I would like to congratulate you and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris on your historic victory on November 3, 2020. We were proud to endorse you for President for the 2020 Elections and very appreciative of your strong gun violence prevention platform. We are thrilled that we will have an opportunity to work with you and your administration to end gun violence in our nation. Newtown Action Alliance is a national grassroots gun violence prevention organization that was born out of the Sandy Hook School shooting tragedy that shattered millions of hearts around the world. For the last eight years, we organized as an all-volunteer organization to use our unapologetic, authentic, and organic voices in the gun violence prevention movement. We prioritized building an alliance and lifting the voices of the families and survivors who have been directly impacted by gun violence in all communities. Our goal is to pass the policies outlined in the Denver Accord, a set of strong comprehensive policies to end all forms of gun violence in our nation. We have traveled to D.C. with families and survivors from urban, suburban and rural communities to host the annual National Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence and to meet with Congress to urge them to pass the policies outlined in the Denver Accord. We coordinate hundreds of local vigils across the nation to honor all victims of gun violence during the month of December every year. We are particularly proud of our efforts to pass a federal ban on assault weapons. We have garnered the support of nearly 300 organizations for the Campaign Against Assault Weapons, providing support for S.66, Senator Diane Feinstein’s assault weapons ban bill and H.R. 1296, Representative David Cicilline’s assault weapons ban bill. We worked closely with Brady and March for Our Lives to secure 216 cosponsors for H.R. 1296 and we plan on building support for Senator Feinstein’s legislation in the coming days. We are confident that H.R. 1296 will pass out of the House of Representatives and we must force the Senate to pass the bill therefore we strongly encourage you and your administration to prioritize banning weapons of war. Mass shooters use assault weapons to terrorize our children and loved ones in our communities. Recently, the FBI has deemed far-right extremism as the deadliest domestic terror threat facing the United States. In many states, extremists are using assault weapons to intimidate lawmakers and the civilian population. The FBI has reported that armed intimidation is being planned in all 50 states leading up to Inauguration Day. If the insurrectionists involved in the violent takeover of the Capitol Building on January 6, 2021 brought their assault WWW.NEWTOWNACTIONALLIANCE.ORG 1 weapons to D.C., the number of deaths would have been much greater. Thankfully, assault weapons are banned in Washington, D.C. Sadly, only seven states (California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York) and the District of Columbia have passed laws to prohibit assault weapons. Our state borders are porous therefore the federal government must ban assault weapons to protect the nation’s elected leaders, our children, and our families in all communities in all 50 states. You successfully passed the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and we are hoping you will help us pass the ban once again in 2021. Twenty first graders and six educators being brutally murdered by a gunman with an AR-15 and high capacity magazines in an elementary school in Sandy Hook should have been enough for Congress to pass the ban. If the ban passed in 2013 then we could have prevented Parkland, Las Vegas, Sutherland Springs, Orlando and many other mass shooting incidents. President Obama said one of his biggest regrets of his Presidency was not being able to pass gun safety legislation after Sandy Hook. We are hoping you will have more success. Thank you for your consideration and we hope to discuss our efforts in greater detail with you and your administration in the near future. Sincerely, Po Murray Chairwoman, Newtown Action Alliance [email protected] 203-512-1778 HISTORY: CAMPAIGN AGAINST ASSAULT WEAPONS After the deadly mass shootings in Aurora, Sandy Hook, San Bernardino, Orlando, Las Vegas, Sutherland Springs, Parkland and Pittsburgh, we are saying NO to #WeaponsOfWar! We joined States United to Prevent Gun Violence to establish a broad coalition of 290+ organizations, chapters and allies on a #CampaignAgainstAssaultWeapons. Louis Klarevas from University of Massachusetts at Boston who wrote “Rampage Nation” collected data on every gun massacre — defined by him as six or more people shot and killed — for the 50 years before 2016. He found that 1) compared to the 10-year period before the ban, the number of gun massacres during the assault weapons ban (1994-2004) period fell by 37 percent, and the number of people dying from gun massacres fell by 43 percent 2) during the 10-year period (2004-2014) after the assault weapons ban lapsed in 2004, there was 183 percent increase in massacres and a 239 percent increase in massacre deaths. It was the first time many of us saw these terrifying scenes. But it was far from the last.

  • The Parkland Shooting.” It Too Can Be Understood As a Form of Civic Engagement
FROM THE INSTRUCTOR When the shooting broke out in Parkland, Florida, last February 14, Miranda was already underway with research for an essay about A Beautiful Mind, a 2001 film about the schizophrenic mathematician John Nash. Continuing with that worthy project would’ve been the easiest way for her complete the assignment. But in the wake of Parkland, Miranda’s motivation to understand the power of media representations of mental illness gave her the courage to change her approach midstream and to dive into a controversial political issue. Her choice paid off with the compelling and timely essay you are about to read. In Miranda’s words, “It is possible to start somewhere and then end up in a completely different place, and that is sometimes the best way to develop a project.” On March 24, as students across the country gathered for the March for Our Lives, Miranda was making the last round of revisions to her prizewinning essay “Representations of Mental Illness Within FOX and CNN: The Parkland Shooting.” It too can be understood as a form of civic engagement. In this paper, Miranda presents new data she collected about news coverage of the Parkland school shooting and uses the kind of critical information literacy skills that are essential to responsible citizenship. In doing so, she contributes to both scholarly and public conversations about gun violence and mental illness. Her portfolio makes the connection between scholarly and public discourse explicit when she describes how she drew on knowledge from her research to respond to an acquaintance’s Instagram post blaming gun violence on mentally ill people in especially derogatory terms.

  • Understanding Persistence in the Resistance Authors: Dana R
Understanding Persistence in the Resistance Authors: Dana R. Fisher1 and Lorien Jasny2 Abstract Since Donald Trump’s Inauguration, large-scale protest events have taken place around the US, with many of the biggest events being held in Washington, DC. The streets of the nation’s capital have been flooded with people marching about a diversity of progressive issues including women’s rights, climate change, and gun violence. Although research has found that these events have mobilized a high proportion of repeat participants who come out again-and-again, limited research has focused on understanding differential participation in protest, especially during one cycle of contention. This paper, accordingly, explores the patterns among the protest participants to understand differential participation and what explains persistence in the Resistance. In it, we analyze a unique dataset collected from surveys conducted with a random sample of protest participant at the largest protest events in Washington, DC since the inauguration of Donald Trump. Our findings provide insights into repeat protesters during this cycle of contention. The paper concludes by discussion how our findings contribute to the research on differential participation and persistence. • Issue Background Over the Past Several Years, Gun Violence
Gun Violence Prevention Background NFTY Mechina 2015 Issue Background Over the past several years, gun violence prevention has once again been at the forefront of North American political discourse, spurred in large part by the movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado, the Navy Yard shooting in Washington, D.C., and the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, among others. The costs of gun violence in the United States are staggering: Consider these numbers: 8: Each day, eight young Americans under age 19 die from gun violence. 12: The rate of gun deaths among America’s children is 12 times higher than those of the 25 other wealthiest nations combined. 30,000: Over 30,000 Americans die each year from gun violence. $100 Billion: The estimated medical and social cost of gun violence in America, every single year. Nearly 80% of this cost is borne by taxpayers. The vast majority of Americans, even gun owners, support common sense gun safety measures. According to the National Opinion Research Center, 75% of gun owners support mandatory registration of handguns, as does 85% of the general public. 66% of gun owners and 80% of the general public favor mandatory background checks in private handgun sales, such as gun shows. However, some Americans believe that such gun control measures are unnecessary, ineffective, and contrary to the wording and spirit of the Second Amendment of the Constitution, which states, “A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” Groups such as the National Rifle Association (NRA) argue that law-abiding citizens, like hunters and sportsmen, will suffer the most under restrictive gun control laws, while criminals will always be able to access guns no matter what restrictions or gun control measures are enacted.

  • The Blinding Rapture of Mobilization Vs. the Deep
THE BLINDING RAPTURE OF MOBILIZATION VS. THE DEEP STATE1 By Moshe ben Asher, PhD & KhulDa bat Sarah For the millions who marched on the day after the Trump inauguration, doing so would surely have built their morale and clarified their political thinking, as evidenced by the fact that many of them have continued to resist and challenge the Trump administration’s worst initiatives. But did it do more than that? Ideally, the effect of such mobilizations would be to chasten Trump, to prompt him to restrain his worst inclinations. Or, if not that, then perhaps in a more roundabout fashion they could influence the Republican majority in Congress who, feeling pressure, would disassociate themselves from Trump, causing him to restrain his more outrageous behavior.2 But this does not appear to have happened. Why is that? Given our careers as professional community organizers, we have serious doubts about the staying power and the ultimate outcomes of mobilizations not built on long-term organizational development and seasoned leadership, which are the basis for waging extended campaigns. In their absence, even mass mobilizations can be forgotten in a matter of days. It’s no accident that few of us remember the massive anti-war demonstrations that preceded the U.S. invasion of Iraq. They did not prevent the war.3 It’s not that there’s anything wrong with marching. Every experienced community organizer has witnessed and appreciated the euphoria that accompanies such mobilizations, even those with turnouts in the hundreds (let alone in the millions). When citizens who have previously experienced themselves as powerless find themselves surrounded by others who share their resentment and their hopes and dreams, it’s no surprise they feel joyful.4 This reaction fits the definition of rapture: “a feeling of intense pleasure or joy,”5 which have positive benefits for organizing.

Too many Americans have been senselessly gunned down in public spaces in towns and cities in Florida. With easy access to military-style semi-automatic assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines, too many individuals have turned our schools, malls, concerts, movie theaters, stores, restaurants, nightclubs, food festivals, streets, workplaces, and places of worship into war zones filled with terror, devastation, and terrible loss. Military-style semi-automatic assault weapons are designed to efficiently kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time available. ● On July 20, 2012, a 24-year-old white male killed 12 people and injured 70 others (58 from gunfire) with assault weapons and high capacity magazines inside a Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. ● On December 14, 2012, a 20-year-old white male killed 26 children and educators with an AR-15 and high capacity magazines in less than five minutes at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. ● On December 2, 2015, a homegrown extremist couple killed 14 people and 22 others with assault weapons and high capacity magazines in an attack at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California. ● On June 12, 2016, a 29-year-old security guard, killed 49 people and injured 53 others with an assault weapon and high capacity magazines in an attack targeting LGBTQI community inside the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
