Although the last exams were written on Friday, 30th November, the staff have been hard at work planning for 2019, marking scripts and preparing promotion schedules for the Gauteng Department of Education over the past week. I am pleased to report that the year-end exams, from Grade 8 to matric, proceeded smoothly with no incidents or irregularities and we now await the final results of all our pupils with excitement and eager anticipation. We wish our matrics, in particular, all the best for their final results which will be available at the school on Friday, 4th January and for their future after Jeppe as they close this chapter of their lives. Please note that reports will be available electronically, via the Ed-Admin Parent Portal, on Wednesday, 12th December 2018. Parents will receive a notification via email in this regard once reports are available for viewing. Staff are unfortunately not allowed to release reports prior to this date as our results required to be ratified by the Gauteng Department of Education. School re-opens for learners on Wednesday, 9th January (boarders are expected to report to their hostels on the afternoon of Tuesday, 8th January) and I request the support and co-operation of all parents in ensuring that their sons return to school with the correct haircut and uniform as per the School's Code of Conduct as highlighted later in this newsletter. I trust you will enjoy reading this last newsletter for the year and, in particular, the highlights of 2018 that are detailed herein. I’m sure that these highlights will be an appetiser for a more comprehensive report of the 2018 year as recorded in the annual school magazine which is expected to be available in January next year. As the bulk of our learners and parents turn their attention to their holidays, we welcome 220 Grade 7 pupils, who will be joining the Jeppe family next year, on their Induction Camp which will take place this weekend. My thanks to the prefects and staff who have given up their weekend to accompany the Grade 7 boys and to the number of staff who are accompanying boys on provincial sporting tours and school camps over the holiday period. Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our parents, pupils, staff and members of the Jeppe community a restful break, safe travels over this holiday period and a happy New Year! I look forward to seeing you all again in 2019! Dale Jackson HEADMASTER 2018 SCHOOL ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING We thank all the parents and stakeholders who attended the Annual General Meeting on 07 November. The main purpose of the meeting was the presentation of the 2019 budget and the annual reports as well as the adoption of the various Special Resolutions affecting the governance of the school. All the resolutions were unanimously approved with the main points of note being that: • An annual school fee increase of 8.5% was approved. As a result, the School Fees for 2019 are R47 150.00 for a day scholar. A discount of R2 000.00 will be available should the full payment be made by 31 December 2018 and a discount of R1 750.00 should full payment be made by 31 January 2019. • Hostel fees for 2019 were approved to increase by 7.5% and are therefore R52 900.00 for weekly boarders and R58 250.00 for termly boarders. The same discounts as listed above are applicable to hostel fees. A detailed report of all resolutions passed may be obtained from the school on written request. Please see the full fees document attached. VALEDICTION 2018 One of the highlights of the year for the matrics is their Valediction Ceremony which was celebrated by the class of 2018 on 17 October. The Pipe Band who were once again in attendance to welcome the learners and their families were accompanied this year by the Marimba Band. The performances of both these bands were greatly appreciated by all in attendance. Mr Jackson was joined by his deputies Mr Kolkenbeck-Ruh, Mr Leathem and Mrs Rattray in hosting what was an emotional and very special evening for these young men, attending a formal function as a group of the school, for the last time. The address by the guest speaker, Mr Mduduzi Mnisi, Head Boy of 2009 and now a qualified attorney, was hugely meaningful and impactful to the learners embarking on the next stage in their lives. All top academic achievers were acknowledged and received their awards and colours as well as the Grade 12 special awards as follows. Special Awards Justin Van Aardt H.F. For a complete explanation of the uniform and appearance requirements, please consult the school code of conduct on the Jeppe website at www.jeppeboys.co.za. As a basic guideline, please see the requirements below: School Uniform • Plain white shirt (not a sports shirt), appropriate school tie, school jersey (black with two white stripes on the V-neck), school blazer, grey flannels neither tapered nor flared, plain grey socks and plain black, leather lace-up shoes (without buckles, patterns or embroidery). Slip on, square toed or fashion shoes are not permitted. • Shoes must be polished • The school blazer is to be worn at all times. Hairstyles • Hair must be hygienically clean, neat, combed and respectable; • Hair must be short, and must not touch ears, eyebrows or collar; • All learners are encouraged to wear their hair natural / hair may not be unnaturally altered (no hair colour, relaxers, highlight etc.); • Any change from one length of hair to another needs to be gradual and reasonable (e.g. hair clipper size #2 into a #1, or a #3 into a #2); • ‘Steps’ or dramatic changes in hair length is deemed unacceptable and is not permitted; • Boys may not shave lines, partings or patterns into their hair • Boys may not have their heads clean-shaven unless required to do so by a cultural custom, in which case a letter from a parent/guardian must be provided to the headmaster and SGB requesting permission and/or notifying of valid reasons The management of the school is of the belief that these measures will help to maintain the high standards of excellence and discipline which are expected of Jeppe Boys and we thank you for your assistance and support.

Newsletter Term 1 #7 9 March 2018 St Andrew’s COLLEGE Nec Aspera Terrent To the Andrean Community Winning is fun... Sure. But winning is not the point. Wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never letting up is the point. Never being satisfied with what you've done is the point. Pat Summitt As I write this newsletter I am in the Highlander, looking over that most beautiful of school sights, Lower Field, emerald green after the blessing of lots of soaking rain in Grahamstown, with the early preparations underway for a feast of weekend cricket against Grey. It is a beautiful late summer morning, and as I savour my pot of tea, the wonderful cricket-y scene below is betrayed by the slight fatigue evident in the leaves, the slight nip in the air, and the pale blue of an increasingly distant sky. These are all signs that soon the seasons will have turned. The posts will be up, and the voices of Andreans everywhere will be echoing across Grahamstown as the Blues run out to represent us all in another display of great rugby. We look forward to another cracker of a winter sports season, not just in rugby, and not just at top-team levels. St Andrew’s College Nec Aspera Terrent 9 March 2018 Across every age group and team we expect our boys again to be playing with that characteristic College grit and extraordinary commitment, carrying the ethos of nec aspera terrent in their hearts wherever they go. And although winning is always great and we never intend to lose, winning is not everything.

  • Reflections from the Rector's Desk
Reflections from the Rector’s Desk Dear Parents, Old Greys and Friends of The Grey We are experiencing an ‘action-packed’ start to 2015! Best wishes to all members of The Grey Family for a successful, happy and healthy year. May all we do continue to be in the best interests of The Grey and those we serve. This is also our School Governing Body election year – and we will need to find some additional, suitable candidates amongst our Parent Body to fill a number of vacancies. Many thanks to those who have already expressed an interest and who have made themselves available. MR DIETER PAKENDORF – RECTOR : 1977 – 1992 Our esteemed former Rector passed away on Thursday 12 February. His funeral was held on Wednesday 18 February in the Lutheran Church, Cape Town City centre. Dieter’s incredible support and love for his school continued long after his retirement – and this with his good wife, Maureen, as ever, at his side. And so it is hugely fitting that his ashes be interred in the wall of the Memorial Quad alongside former Rectors of The Grey – this to be done in May, before our Friday Reunion Assembly, and in the presence of the School, members of the Family and all assembled Old Greys and Friends. The numerous tributes which have poured in from Old Greys all over the world bear ample testimony to the fact that he made a massive impact on a generation of Grey boys and that his masterful hand guided many to success. MATRIC RESULTS 2014 We were generally very happy with the academic performance of last year’s Matrics.

  • From Our Office the Well-Known Farmer's Weekly Columnist Peter Hughes Was Quoted in a Recent Issue Urging the Readership
From our Office The well-known Farmer’s Weekly columnist Peter Hughes was quoted in a recent issue urging the readership “to emerge from this festive season in a positive frame of mind, and spread that optimism liberally around you” We would like to possibly put a variation on Hughes’s constructive advice. Dare we say that we have all emerged from under the dark clouds that have hung over us in our country. We do not need to look back and relive these times. We live in a great country and let us be thankful that we attended a great school. Let us help where we can and not always assume that all is well. The Grey schools need your support in whichever way you may be able to assist. Do a reality check perhaps on yourself and drive past a disadvantaged school. There is a high school off Heugh Road near the entrance to the Walmer Township and in driving past we need to consider the conditions under which those pupils receive an education. For every deserving disadvantaged boy that we can bring to Grey to offer a Grey education we are making a difference not only to that young lad but also to his entire family. It is a huge uplifting experience for all concerned. Be part of it and answer the call. This is one of the objectives of the Grey Foundation and we welcome your support. TransDale Extra May 2012 No 27. May, 2012 TransDale Extra CAPE to CAIRO - by bike Three farmers and a Greek --- two Old Dalians and two friends --- travel a hard way OLD DALIAN farmer Richard Bennett was sitting in his bakkie, waiting for his staff to gather a flock of sheep, when he received a phone call from his friend Old Dalian Stelios Georgiou. They were having a relaxed conversation, talking about business and why life is such a race. Stelios mentioned to Richard how he al- ways dreamed of riding into his home town in Cyprus on a motorbike, from Fort Beaufort. Richard responded and said he often thought about a similar trip through Africa from the southern-most tip to the most northern tip. He had recently watched the DVD of Charlie Borman and Ewin McGregor with their epic journey on the long way down Africa. Both went quiet for a moment, then Richard said: “Swaer, we must do it!” A few days later Richard saw a friend, Rufus Dreyer, at a braai and told him about his dream. With big eyes, Rufus said he would be in, if given half an opportunity, not realising the consequences. Richard, very excited, could not wait to phone his good friend Norman Em- slie, who immediately showed To Page 2 ADVENTURERS Richard Bennett (left), Stelios Georgiou and Rufus Dreyer THE GREEK: A passion for biking THE FARMER: No biker, but ready to ride STELIOS GEORGIOU (42), Dale matric 1987, First XV 1985 - RICHARD BENNETT (50), Dale matric 1979, is a sheep and cattle 87, co-owns a family Spar in Fort Beaufort with his brother farmer near Adelaide in the Eastern Cape.
