7 December 2018 Newsletter 11/2018

FROM THE HEADMASTER’S DESK

Dear parents,

We have come to the end of an extremely busy, and very successful, 2018. Although the last exams were written on Friday, 30th November, the staff have been hard at work planning for 2019, marking scripts and preparing promotion schedules for the Gauteng Department of Education over the past week.

I am pleased to report that the year-end exams, from Grade 8 to matric, proceeded smoothly with no incidents or irregularities and we now await the final results of all our pupils with excitement and eager anticipation. We wish our matrics, in particular, all the best for their final results which will be available at the school on Friday, 4th January and for their future after Jeppe as they close this chapter of their lives.

Please note that reports will be available electronically, via the Ed-Admin Parent Portal, on Wednesday, 12th December 2018. Parents will receive a notification via email in this regard once reports are available for viewing. Staff are unfortunately not allowed to release reports prior to this date as our results required to be ratified by the Gauteng Department of Education.

School re-opens for learners on Wednesday, 9th January (boarders are expected to report to their hostels on the afternoon of Tuesday, 8th January) and I request the support and co-operation of all parents in ensuring that their sons return to school with the correct haircut and uniform as per the School's Code of Conduct as highlighted later in this newsletter.

I trust you will enjoy reading this last newsletter for the year and, in particular, the highlights of 2018 that are detailed herein. I’m sure that these highlights will be an appetiser for a more comprehensive report of the 2018 year as recorded in the annual school magazine which is expected to be available in January next year.

As the bulk of our learners and parents turn their attention to their holidays, we welcome 220 Grade 7 pupils, who will be joining the Jeppe family next year, on their Induction Camp which will take place this weekend. My thanks to the prefects and staff who have given up their weekend to accompany the Grade 7 boys and to the number of staff who are accompanying boys on provincial sporting tours and school camps over the holiday period.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our parents, pupils, staff and members of the Jeppe community a restful break, safe travels over this holiday period and a happy New Year!

I look forward to seeing you all again in 2019!

Dale Jackson HEADMASTER

2018 SCHOOL ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

We thank all the parents and stakeholders who attended the Annual General Meeting on 07 November.

The main purpose of the meeting was the presentation of the 2019 budget and the annual reports as well as the adoption of the various Special Resolutions affecting the governance of the school.

All the resolutions were unanimously approved with the main points of note being that:

• An annual school fee increase of 8.5% was approved. As a result, the School Fees for 2019 are R47 150.00 for a day scholar. A discount of R2 000.00 will be available should the full payment be made by 31 December 2018 and a discount of R1 750.00 should full payment be made by 31 January 2019. • Hostel fees for 2019 were approved to increase by 7.5% and are therefore R52 900.00 for weekly boarders and R58 250.00 for termly boarders. The same discounts as listed above are applicable to hostel fees.

A detailed report of all resolutions passed may be obtained from the school on written request.

Please see the full fees document attached.

VALEDICTION 2018

One of the highlights of the year for the matrics is their Valediction Ceremony which was celebrated by the class of 2018 on 17 October.

The Pipe Band who were once again in attendance to welcome the learners and their families were accompanied this year by the Marimba Band. The performances of both these bands were greatly appreciated by all in attendance.

Mr Jackson was joined by his deputies Mr Kolkenbeck-Ruh, Mr Leathem and Mrs Rattray in hosting what was an emotional and very special evening for these young men, attending a formal function as a group of the school, for the last time.

The address by the guest speaker, Mr Mduduzi Mnisi, Head Boy of 2009 and now a qualified attorney, was hugely meaningful and impactful to the learners embarking on the next stage in their lives.

School Regulations

The school management team have, once again, taken the decision that boys who do not comply with the rules and regulations regarding appearance, will be sent home on the first day of school to rectify their appearance.

For a complete explanation of the uniform and appearance requirements, please consult the school code of conduct on the Jeppe website at www.jeppeboys.co.za. As a basic guideline, please see the requirements below:

School Uniform • Plain white shirt (not a sports shirt), appropriate school tie, school jersey (black with two white stripes on the V-neck), school blazer, grey flannels neither tapered nor flared, plain grey socks and plain black, leather lace-up shoes (without buckles, patterns or embroidery). Slip on, square toed or fashion shoes are not permitted. • Shoes must be polished • The school blazer is to be worn at all times.

Hairstyles

• Hair must be hygienically clean, neat, combed and respectable; • Hair must be short, and must not touch ears, eyebrows or collar; • All learners are encouraged to wear their hair natural / hair may not be unnaturally altered (no hair colour, relaxers, highlight etc.); • Any change from one length of hair to another needs to be gradual and reasonable (e.g. hair clipper size #2 into a #1, or a #3 into a #2); • ‘Steps’ or dramatic changes in hair length is deemed unacceptable and is not permitted; • Boys may not shave lines, partings or patterns into their hair • Boys may not have their heads clean-shaven unless required to do so by a cultural custom, in which case a letter from a parent/guardian must be provided to the headmaster and SGB requesting permission and/or notifying of valid reasons

The management of the school is of the belief that these measures will help to maintain the high standards of excellence and discipline which are expected of Jeppe Boys and we thank you for your assistance and support.

ARMISTICE DAY 2018

The annual Jeppe High School for Boys Remembrance Service took on special significance this year because it marked the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I on 11th November 1918.

There were one or two additions to the programme, including the telling of the story of one particular old boy who died in World War II, and the recounting of the fate of the SAS Mendi, the ship that was sunk in 1917 with 600 black South African soldiers on board.

Journalist Fred Khumalo told the moving story of the Mendi, and laid a wreath in memory of the men who died that day.

Travis Kroggel retold the story of Robert George Hamilton, a Jeppe old boy who died in Poland in World War II when his plane was shot down.

The event organiser, Mr Rob Faltermeier, explained that while the theme of the day is a military one – commemorating those who were killed in various wars – it actually goes beyond that. The aim is to honour the sacrifices made, but not to glorify war in any way. In the end it is right to acknowledge those who died, but the real aim is to ensure that these things don’t happen again.

The Jeppe Remembrance Service, while it involves the pipe band and a parade, is primarily a religious service. This year it was conducted by Father Anthony Egan of Wits University and it incorporated the customary reading of the role of honour by the Headmaster.

Wreaths were laid at the War Memorial on behalf of various organisations associated with the school, and at the Scottish Horse Memorial on the ridge – marking the school’s commitment to the Kensington community.

It was, as always, a deeply moving occasion.

The school collected R2 410.30 for the SA Legion of Military Veterans for which they are most grateful.

Mr. Khumalo referenced his visit to Jeppe in an article written for the Financial Mail where he said: “As a keynote speaker, I got to lay the wreath for the men who went down with the SS Mendi, as subject I have written a book about, a pocket of hidden history. It’s an amazing school. A repository of SA history, it boasts a number of war memorials right there on the premises. Though it has produced some powerful leaders, ranging from the author Peter Becker to Jake White, the World Cup – winning coach Springbok coach, there’s nothing pretentious about Jeppe High. It’s one of those schools one wishes could be replicated to show how public schools could be governed and what role these could play in laying the foundations for an inclusive SA.”

SHOES DONATIONS

Thank you to everyone, in particular the matrics, for giving your used (and in some instances, new) shoes for donation to the learners of Denver Primary and High Schools.

These learners very often are without shoes, even during winter, and these donations will go a long way in making their school days more bearable.

Thank you to Mrs Lilley and the RCL for driving this initiative.

3rd PHASE – CLASSROOM REFURBISHMENT

The official unveiling of the 3rd phase of our classroom refurbishment project took place at the “Old Boys Breakfast” on Wednesday 07 November.

Thank you, once again, to the Droste Trust (represented by Mr Richard Parker) and Mr John Turner for the funding of this phase of the project.

The continued support from our Old Boys community is greatly appreciated in enabling us to keep upgrading our campus and improving the facilities for our learners.

Mr Jackson, Mr Turner and Mr Parker

INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY

At the Headmasters’ meeting of the boys’ schools in Gauteng, a commitment was made to not only support International Men’s Day on 19 November, but to emphasise the importance of the true values of “manliness” in today’s society.

Below, is a summary of the statement that was agreed to by all the boys’ schools.

Fostering in our young men a revised concept of “Manliness” and of Leadership

Since 1999, 19 November has been recognised as International Men’s Day.

The proposed objectives of International Men’s Day include a focus on men’s and boys’ health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models. It is also suggested as an occasion whereby men may highlight discrimination against them and celebrate their positive achievements and contributions to communities, places of work, friendships, families, marriages, and child care.

As a school educating boys, we acknowledge that we have a key role to play in enabling the objectives of International Men’s Day to be realized. The objectives speak to a number of societal issues which affect all of us.

Our focus is on fostering in our young men a revised concept of leadership and of ‘Manliness’ – founded upon respect for others, authenticity, empathy, compassion, courage, selfhood and resilience, and acknowledging the need to speak out when one’s values are compromised. It is Values-Based Moral Leadership which will ensure we grow good husbands, good sons, good fathers and good brothers, who will make a difference in their school and in their society.

PHYSIOTHERAPY ON SITE AT JEPPE BOYS

Following the departure of Floyd Lebatie, (Jeppe Old Boy and previous physiotherapist at the school), to concentrate on his private practice, the school is pleased to welcome Jeppe High School for Girls alumnus Simone Schafer as the school’s resident physio.

Simone is eminently qualified for the job. She has a physiotherapy degree from Wits University and has also studied orthopaedic physiotherapy and sports physio. While she was at Jeppe Girls she did the Level 3 First Aid qualification with Mr Richard Green, Jeppe Old Boy and current educator and resident paramedic.

She is very experienced, having worked for three seasons as the physio for the Wits rugby team as well as having worked with the and at St John’s and KES.

Her primary role at the school will involve doing injury rehabilitation for the boys in the various 1st teams, as well as conditioning work with the school’s strength and conditioning specialist Dominic Shaw.

She will travel with touring teams as part of the coaching staff – a role she is looking forward to as she loves being part of the team vibe.

She has always loved sport and while at Jeppe she played 1st team soccer and cricket.

Director of sport Mr Brendan Gittins is excited at the new dimension Simone will bring to sport at the school. "Floyd did a great job at the school and we were sorry to see him go,” he said, “but we are pleased to have Simone on board now. She has some exciting new ideas and we are looking forward to her having a positive impact on our sports teams."

All Jeppe Boys learners and families may book appointments with Simone directly who may be contacted on 084 569 5807. Please note that Simone’s practice is operated independently of the school and the cost of all appointments are therefore for the account of the individual concerned.

MEMORABLE EVENTS AND OCCASIONS OF 2018

As the year winds down we look back at a selection of some of the memorable events and occasions that Jeppe High School for Boys was involved in during 2018. In a school as busy as ours, there are certainly others that could have been included, however, we think these may be the favourites for most of us.

• Mr Dale Jackson became the 16th Headmaster of the school. He was officially appointed in March after acting as principal since Mr Anton Dempsey’s retirement at the end of the third term of 2017. Mr Jackson was Head Boy of the school in 1990.

Mr Jackson flanked by the three previous Headmasters of the school

• The year began on a high note with the announcement that Avinal Garach achieved a full house – nine “A” symbols - in the 2017 end of year grade 12 exams. They were for: English, Afrikaans, Maths, LO, Accounting, Business Studies, IT, Physical Science and AP Maths.

• In March David Newton became only the fourth Jeppe boy to be awarded an honours blazer. To qualify, he had to achieve full colours in all three areas of school life – academics, culture and sport.

• The pipe band attended the Basel Tattoo in Switzerland for the second time. It is extremely rare for a school band to be invited to play at one of the world’s top military displays. Their performance in 2016 earned them a second invitation and they wowed the crowds again this year.

• The Emergency Medical Care Club continued its dominance of the Provincial Inter-schools First Aid competition by winning the senior division and coming 1st and 2nd in the juniors. The club rendered a valuable service to the school and the wider community throughout the year.

• The Jeppe Dramatic Art Society, shortly after staging a spectacular version of Macbeth – at sites around the campus - competed in the EADS and GRADS one act play festivals. Their play Ergo Propter Hoc, written by old boy Ryan Naamdhew came 4th overall and received seven nominations for awards for the overall festivals. They were: best actor in a comedy- Cade Fyfe (EADS); best cameo- Lesego Ngubeni, David Newton, Julian Lanning (GRADS) and best original script- Ryan Naamdhew (GRADS)

• Jeppe High School for Boys came first in the 2018 national Maths Literacy Olympiad. Robert Doubell scored 92% and finished 3rd in the country. The marks of the top 10 candidates from each school were averaged and Jeppe got 86.2%, 5 % more than second-placed Midstream College.

• The family of Jeppe schools – Jeppe High School for Boys, Jeppe High School for Girls and Jeppe High Preparatory School – celebrated Freedom Day at a joint assembly in April. There were speeches by Jeppe RCL Chairman, Thando Maseko, and Gauteng MEC for Education, Mr Panyaza Lesufi, with the keynote address by education activist Ms Lovelyn Nwadeyi. It was a moving day, one that will be remembered by all who were there, and a significant date in the histories of the three schools.

• The annual Jeppe High School for Boys Remembrance Service took on special significance this year because it marked the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I on 11th November 1918. There were stories about particular old boys who had died in wars and guest speaker Fred Khumalo told the story of the 600 black soldiers who died on the SS Mendi.

• The marimba band has been a welcome addition to the cultural landscape. They have been working hard and this year reached a level of excellence which saw them perform at a number of events including, recently, the departure of the South African Women cricket team to the T20 World Cup.

TEN SPORTING HIGHLIGHTS OF 2018

We look at 10 sporting achievements that stood out in 2018. It’s not a top 10 – there are others that could have made the list – it’s merely a selection of memorable achievements and occasions.

• The 1st hockey team went unbeaten and ended the season as the top-ranked team in the country, arguably the top achievement by any Jeppe team in recent times. The team had a record of 31 games, 22 wins and nine draws. They successfully defended the Aitken Cup for the fourth year in a row.

• It was a good year for Jeppe rowing. The team won three gold medals at the SA Championships in March and at the Gauteng Champs at the end of the year they came third in the team standings – the top State school – and won nine medals. The team captain, Sebastian Prince, rowed for in the Junior World Championships in the Czech Republic in July. His coxed four came third in the B final, which is ninth overall.

• In August our head boy, Muzi Manyike, made Jeppe history when he captained the South African Schools U18 team in their game against France. It capped off a great year for him in which he played for the South Arica under- 18 Sevens team, led the successful Jeppe 1st team and starred for the Golden Lions at the Craven Week.

• It was a good year for Jeppe old boys in the world of rugby. S’bu Nkosi became our 5th Springbok when he was selected to play against France in June. Hacjivah Dayimani made his debut for the Lions and Tyrone Green and Wandisile Simelane starred for the Junior Boks and played in the . Rasta Rashivenge was appointed to referee two Test matches in the Africa Gold Cup series and Bafana Nhleko was part of the under-19 World Cup coaching staff and his Golden Lions under-19 team won their Currie Cup competition. He has been contracted to the permanent coaching staff at SA Rugby.

• Ntuthuko Ndimande’s amazing athletics story continued. He turned 17 this year, so he is between age groups – ASA has an under-16 and an under-18 division. None-the-less, he came second in the 800m at the SA Junior national championships in April. He broke all the school and inter-high middle distance records this year and has been excelling in the meetings in the elite athletes season.

The first rugby team had one of its most successful seasons in recent years. The highlight was undoubtedly the two wins over King Edward, 24-21 in May, and 40-25 in July. The team played 18 games and lost three – to Selborne, Affies and Parktown. 21 players were selected for provincial teams in July, including 10 in the Craven Week team, two in the Craven Week XV and three in the Academy Week team. Another remarkable rugby event of the year was the 3rd XV’s win over the Northcliff 1st team, at Northcliff. Northcliff has been the top co-ed school in Joburg in recent years.

• After making the SA Schools team at the end of last year, Kgaudise Molefe was chosen for the SA under- 19 cricket team that played in the ICC Junior World Cup in January and went on the U19 tour to the UK in July. He has also played for the Gauteng Strikers this year.

• It was a good year for Jeppe water polo. The first team won the local Top Eight League and made it through to the last four of the Saints Invitational tournament. Five players made national teams – Calvin Kuperus, Rourke Templeton, Liam Stott, Sebastijan Stojanovic and Claus Kaminski. Eleven Jeppe boys will be playing in interprovincial tournaments in December.

• The under-15 cricket team won the Johnny Waite Knockout competition in February, beating King Edward VII School by 30 runs in the final. The team was unbeaten as under-14s last year and has had another very good year.

U15 Captain, Dylan Nicholas receiving the winner’s trophy

• The 1st cricket team beat St Stithians twice this year. The first was back in the first term when they beat the full Saints side, with their matrics playing, at St Stithians. They followed this up by winning the game between the “stayers” at the two schools, at Jeppe earlier this month. It was a good year – the team played 31 games in all, with nineteen wins, six draws and six losses. They were rewarded with the selection of seven players for the various Central Gauteng Lions provincial teams.

ROWING IN REVIEW (1st half of 2018/2019 season)

The first half of the rowing season ended on a high note for Jeppe when they came third in the team placings and won nine medals at the Gauteng Schools Rowing Championships at Roodeplaat Dam.

The third place meant that they were the top State school in the final team standings and the nine-medal haul – one gold, four silver and four bronze – was their best performance at the championships for many years.

The gold medal was won by the team captain, Sebastian Prince, in the under-19 single sculls. He was also part of the crew that took silver in the under-19 coxed four.

The silver medals were won by the under-19 Coxed Four – Sebastian Prince, Dameon Westley, Cameron Correia de Araujo, Jaydin Crickmore, Zain Saeed; the under-16 Coxed Four – Nicholas Bonthuys, Phoenix Griessel, Aiden Buck, Liam McCourt, Cuan Thompson; the under-15 Double – Kegan Kirkland, Reece Arran and the under-14 Single Scull – Mandla Green.

The bronze medals went to: under-16 Single Scull – Phoenix Griessel; under-16 Pair – Aiden Buck, Liam McCourt; under- 15 Quad – Alessandro Agrizzi, Darian Ferreira, Joshua Gillespie, Zenith-B Griessel, Jeb Molteno and under-15 Octuple – Devon Lacy, Darian Ferreira, Joshua Gillespie, Zenith-B Griessel, Jeb Molteno, Mandla Green, Ryan Deane, Luca Correia, Dustin Pierdica.

Of the 20 events entered by the school, Jeppe progressed to the A finals in 19. In the under-19 four, under-16 single sculls; under-15 four, and under-15 double there was more than one Jeppe boat in the A final so in the end 24 Jeppe crews raced in A finals.

Mr Devin Cripwell, our MIC of rowing, is happy with the progress that the sport is making at the school. “These have been our best results at Gauteng Champs for some while,” he said. “Last year we only won three medals at this event. More important is the fact that we got so many boats into A finals, that shows that we are building up our strength in depth which is the only way to be competitive.

The improvement is due to many different things, however, getting the right structures in place has been key as the boys thrive when there is order.

The parents have been very supportive and through their hard work the school has increased their number of boats, which is an essential key to success.

We also have a great bunch of boys. Many have real natural talent, but all of them were prepared to work very hard and it has paid off. We are lucky to have a group of driven, hard- working coaches as well.

The next assignment, for the first eight, is the Schools Boat Race in Port Alfred in December, while the entire club will be back at work, before school even begins next year.

Well done to all concerned and may the pride and success in the rowing club remain strong in the 2nd half of the season.

MYSCHOOL CARD

We encourage all our parents to become involved in the MySchool Card initiative which currently raises in the region of +- R5 500 per month for the school in additional funds.

These funds are a valuable source of income for the school which supplement our school fees and are used in many ways to enhance the learning, sporting and cultural experience of the boys in the school.

To sign up for a MySchool Card, simply go to their website (www.myschool.co.za) and following the directions. Select Jeppe High School for Boys as your beneficiary school. Your card will then be sent to you. Forms and cards are also available from the school, from Mrs Jarvis. Please enquire at the Front Office.

For those parents who are already on the system, we would like to encourage you to include Jeppe High School for Boys as a beneficiary. This may be done on the MySchool website.
