French, Spanish and German

Six Oakhamian linguists spent a fantastic day at Nottingham Girls, High School. They joined girls from NGHS and Stamford School and were tasked with writing, directing and acting in a play on a topical issue in their target language. The French plays all used the Gilets Jaunes movement as inspiration, and the Spanish teams focused on the financial crisis and its effects on the traditional Spanish family model.

All six students put in excellent performances on stage at NGHS’s Squire Theatre and showed an incredible command of their respective languages. Oakham students swept the board in the awards ceremony which followed the performances. Congratulations to the following:

Emma Hearn won Best Stage Presence. Tess Davenport won Best Language. Elizabeth Glynn won Best Projection and Body Language. Elizabeth Glynn and Janhavi Modak made up half of the team who won Best Play. Emma Hearn was in the team who were runners-up in the Best Play category.

PERFORMING ARTS

Drama

Scholars’ Production

The Scholars’ Production always brings mixed emotions as it is the swansong for Form 7. This year, our wonderful Scholars presented by Moira Buffini. This was a most challenging play even for actors of this stature and only at Oakham would this be attempted! The play is a fictional account, inspired by true events, of the relationship between Queen Elizabeth II and her first female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. The towering performances of Clara Hallam and Clo Farmer as the Queen and Mrs T were truly extraordinary and were their last on the stage of the QET. They have graced so many wonderful productions over the years and will be sorely missed both as extraordinary performers and as exemplary ambassadors for theatre at Oakham. Our splendid Form 6 Scholars in the shape of Kitty McNeill, Sam Riley and Charlotte Wilson also performed with consummate skill and great maturity and look set to carry on the work and uphold the standards set by Clo and Clara. Isolde Small a Middle School Scholar, also joined this cast and was equal to the job in every way; promising so much for the future of theatre at Oakham.

Music

The highlight of this term’s music calendar was the annual Gala Concert, which took place on Sunday 3 March in the Albert Hall, Nottingham. Nearly 300 pupils were involved in the performance, which celebrated both the collective and individual talents of Oakham School pupils. The Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra and Chapel Choir gave spectacular performances of a varied and eclectic mix of music. The whole of Form 3 joined the Chapel Choir for a choral performance of the iconic music theatre song, You’ll Never Walk Alone, from the musical Carousel. Special congratulations must go to Alina Maries-Reim, who gave an accomplished performance of Vivaldi’s ‘Cello Concerto in A minor, RV418, and to Vienna Chan whose exhilarating and inspiring solo in two movements from Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2 captivated . We also extend our thanks to our soloists in Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise, tenor William Collison and sopranos Lily McNeill and Beth Whitlock.

Oakham musicians performed in three successful major concerts in Chapel: Ensembles Around Europe, which featured soloists Grace Muris violin, and Vienna Chan piano, the Lower School Showcase, and Friday Night with the Bands, in which Sophie Beeston, Laura Crowley and Lily McNeill gave exceptional performances as vocal soloists with the Big Band. This term has also seen students give ten Music at Lunchtime concerts at All Saints’ Church and perform at four Informal Concerts. Our March concert in the Professional Music in the Chapel series welcomed back the remarkable funk jazz group Resolution 88 led by keyboard player and former Oakham teacher, Tom O’Grady.

In January, the Chamber Choir were invited to perform once again as part of the Brandenburg Choral Festival of London, one of the UK’s biggest and most prominent choral celebrations. Their concert in St Stephen Walbrook, Bank, included stunning performances of works by Darke, Ešenvalds and included Rutter’s Requiem.

Oakham School 5 Beyond Oakham School, Eloise Snape got through three stages of the Vocal Class to win on the day and gain a place in the Final of the Rotary Club Regional Competition.

Oakham School students also performed in the Oakham Choral Society’s concert, Splendours of the Baroque, in March. Congratulations to Alina Maries-Reim and Emilia Hubbard who featured as soloists in this concert, performing concertos by Marcello and Vivaldi, and William Collison who performed the tenor solos in the major choral works by Bach and Vivaldi.

A special congratulations to Maisy Shand who has achieved 100% in her LCM Music Theatre Grade 6 exam.

Oakham School’s eleventh annual English Song Competition was another fantastic festival of solo singing in Chapel and Old Hall, and we were joined by two distinguished adjudicators – professional singers Nicholas Folwell, and Susanna Tudor-Thomas. The standard of the performances was highly praised throughout the day, and all performers are to be congratulated on their involvement. The following were selected as overall prize winners: Beth Whitlock (Overall Winner), Holly Frostwick (Overall Runner-Up) and Evie Holder (Most Promising Young Singer).

In the popular Midlands Sevens Tournament, they were the highest placed Independent School and Runners-Up overall.

Many congratulations to Jenny Mathiesen (Form 6) who has continued to play for the ISFA National Representative team with games against Scotland and the English Colleges.

Oakham School 8 Boys Football

It has been a very successful football season for the boys’ sides with the 1st XI playing some of the best football from an Oakham side for many years. They reached the LB Cup final and agonisingly lost 7-6 on penalties after extra-time against Wellingborough. They were also runners-up in the league.

Hockey

In a very successful term, the U12 Girls & Boys and the U13 Girls & Boys reached the Regional Finals. The U13 boys finally went out in the semi-finals, but the U13 girls finished runners-up (by the narrowest of margins losing a penalty shoot-out) and will now go to the National Finals next term.

The U14 Boys teams have fully embraced participation and success, with virtually every boy in the year representing the School across multiple Saturdays. The U14E team had a tremendous season being almost entirely un beaten until the final match which was lost. The U14B team were the pick of the year group going the entire season unbeaten. The U14As finished runners-up in the Regional Finals and will now play Ipswich School early next term for a place at the National Finals.

At senior level the 1st XI squad had another successful season, playing across two league competitions following a restructure of the National competition. The team finished second in their National League, including most notably a superb victory against Repton. The 1st XI had success in the Independent Schools Hockey League, a superb 10-0 victory against Trent College in the first match of the season set the tone for the term. The team was undefeated in the league, beating Oundle and Repton, to set up the final winner takes all game against Stamford. With both teams level on points going into the last fixtures of the season, it was a straight shootout to see who would claim the title. Having trailed 2-0 for most of the game, the boys were outstanding and scored 3 goals in 5 minutes to win the game and not only secure the league title but extend their impressive unbeaten home run to 3 years.

Oakham School Charities Association (OSCA)

OSCA activity this term has perhaps been a little more modest compared to its usual stratospheric standards. However, there is a lot planned for the Summer Term, especially events organised in Houses. The largest fundraiser was our non-uniform day on March 22, raising money for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young Adults. The OSCA winning performers this term, have been the Lower School: On Saturday 23 March, the girls of Ancaster and Lincoln Houses ran their own "Danceathon" in aid of Comic Relief. Inspired by the recent efforts of various celebrities, the girls aimed to keep both Houses dancing for two hours after school finished. Also for Comic Relief, Sargants and Peterborough Houses held a gargantuan cake sale, combined with a non-uniform day raising more than £1000. In the final week of term, Upper School pupils held a charity hockey match to raise money for the Motor Neurone Charity. Well done to all!
