GIG Cymru & NHS Wales

1.Purpose To provide information on the debate regarding the use of GIG Cymru, rather than the current acronym NHS Cymru

2.Background NHS was the acronym used by the Welsh Office. The National Assembly for Wales also adopted this terminology that is currently used in the NHS Cymru logo. However, NHS Trusts now use GIG in their Welsh titles, and some external translators have used GIG in titles of documents concerning NHS Wales.

There have been inconsistencies in documents issued by the NHS Directorate, and instances where both NHS and GIG have appeared in the same document. This has meant that the corporate identity of NHS Wales has not been coherent.

3.The Way Forward I am writing to advise you that to achieve consistency terminology, GIG Cymru will now be the accepted Welsh language term used to identify NHS Wales, replacing NHS Cymru.

4.Financial Implications Implementing the use of GIG need not necessarily be an unnecessary drain on resources. Costs will inevitably arise from incorporating GIG into the artwork of the NHS logo that will appear on internal and external documents, vehicles etc. I suggest a phased approach to this for NHS Wales, where stationery is replaced as stores are depleted. This may lead to two sets of terminology continuing in use for the short term, however that is no worse than the current situation. Typing GIG Cymru instead of NHS Cymru in Welsh-language texts will cost nothing and should be actioned immediately.

Costs will also arise from redesigning signs that appear outside hospitals, re-painting ambulances etc. However, I recommend that these be redesigned at the end of their natural life, when replacement is essential, and not at the time of GIG’s implementation in written documents. This small change will go a long way to reinforce our commitment to Welsh as a language of equal status in Wales, and I thank you in for your co-operation.

Your contact point at the National Assembly for further information will be Emyr Thomas, NHS Human Resources Division extension 3756.
