Led by pacesetters such as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Bobby Bare, artists in Nashville and Austin demanded the creative freedom to make their own country music, different from the pop-oriented sound that prevailed at the time. This exhibition also examines the cultures of Nashville and fiercely independent Austin, and the complicated, surprising relationships between the two. Artwork by Sam Yeates, Rising from the Ashes, Willie Takes Flight for Austin (2017) 3-6 Introduction 3 This interdisciplinary lesson guide allows classrooms to explore the exhibition Outlaws and Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ‘70s on view at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum® from May 25, 2018 – February 14, 2021. Students will examine the causes and effects of the Outlaw movement through analysis of art, music, video, and nonfiction texts. In doing so, students will gain an understanding of the culture of this movement; who and what influenced it; and how these changes diversified country music’s audience during this time.

  • To Code at Home? Orget the Year
TO CODE AT HOME? orget the year. Voltair processor-induced questions about PPM encod- ing may be the biggest radio story of the last decade. Moving from di- Fary ratings to meter technology in 2007 was intended to remove much of the ambiguity from radio’s audience report card – at least in the top 50 markets. Programmers were confident in the technology and quickly adopted its les- sons, one of the most dramatic being listen- THE YEar’s ers’ aversion to talk. Spoken word formats saw declines and music format morning shows began upping their song count. And then Voltair came along. Introduced in mid-2014 by Telos, the TOP $15,000 processor was aimed at a previously unknown gap in PPM’s audio watermark- StORIES ing encoding. In short, its developers claimed that programming that was quiet, marked by silence or weak in a certain frequency range did a poor job of carrying PPM code – and that their box “enhanced the detectability.” Better encod- ing, the thinking went, meant better ratings. Radio’s response was swift. By summer 2015, hundreds of the units were in use. Even PDs who didn’t have Voltair were taking notice. “You see meter counts jump and think it’s a fluky week, but the next week it goes even higher,” one programmer told Country Aircheck. “When 6+ numbers jump two shares, that’s your first clue.” With many convinced Voltair was doing exactly what it proposed, questions turned to years of decision making based not on programming content, but its audio characteristics. “Where it gets [hairy] is when we decide not to do artist interviews and stay away from any longer talk seg- ment regardless of how compelling,” consultant Becky Brenner said in July.

  • Feature: Tex Williams Still Swings with Western Sounds (UK
"Smoke, Smoke, Smoke (That Cigarette)" and a series of Hollywood western movies set veteran artiste Tex Williams firmly on the pathway of fame. During a recent interview with CMP columnist Bob Powel, Tex gave insight into some of the highlights, and events, in a multi-faceted career. THIRTY YEARS ON-AND TEX STILL SWINGS _WITH WESTERN SOUNDS parries came to expect large sales from , their artistes. "My producer, Mr. Lee '" Gilette informed me that he was going to· have to let me go from the label. My first record only sold 200,000 and the second only around 190,000. He said 'that's not enough, you are the only big band on the label' ". In those days records were cut with a three or four piece band or even with just a guitar, so a 14-piece band like Western Caravan made a much bigger dent in Capitol's recording budget than· fellow Capitol artistes like Tex Ritter and Tennessee Ernie Ford. Tex Williams takes up the story: "I went out scrounging for hit material. Of course at that time everything that Merle Travis was writing was success ful, he was having hit after hit. I asked Merle if he had something. He said 'I have something partially finished, you wouldn't like it, it's probably no good'. It turned out to be 'Smoke, Smoke, Smoke (That Cigarette)'. I finished part EX WILLIAMS must just about be came to meet Spade. '.'This was through of it, and put the melody, such as it is, T the only Country singer who makes another band several years before Spade behind it".

If you have any passion at all for bluegrass or old timey music then this will be (hands down) your album of the year. Loudon Wainwright is an artist I have long admired since I heard a song called “Samson and the Warden” (a wonderfully witty tale of a guy who doesn’t mind being in gaol so long as the warden doesn’t cut his hair) on an ABC radio show called “Room to Move” many years ago. A few years later he had his one and only “hit” with the novelty “Dead Skunk”. Now Loudon pundits will compare the instrumentation on this album with that on that song, and if a real pundit with that of his “The Swimming Song”. The backing is restrained. Banjo (Poole’s own instrument of choice), with guitar, some great mandolin (from Chris Thile) some fiddle (multi instrumentalist David Mansfield), some piano and harmonica and on a couple of tracks some horns. Now, Charlie Poole to the uninitiated was a major star in the very early days of country music. He is said to have pursued a musical career so he wouldn’t have to work and at the same time he could ensure his primary source of income, bootleg liquor, was properly distilled. He was no writer and adapted songs he had heard to his style.
