TONIGHT’S GAME The Flyers visit the Carolina Hurricanes tonight in their 53rd game of the season and 24th on the road. The Flyers are 24-19-9 on the season and are trying to snap a four-game winless streak after a 4-3 shootout loss to Ottawa on Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center. This is the first of several road trips for the Flyers this month, with none consisting of more than two games. It’s also their first game of the season against Carolina – the Flyers have only three teams remaining that they haven’t played this year, and will see all of them this week: the Hurricanes tonight, Montreal on Thursday and Vegas on Sunday, with a Saturday visit to Arizona also mixed in.

LAST GAME

Saturday, February 3, 2018 – Ottawa 4, Flyers 3 (SO) at Wells Fargo Center: Nolan Patrick tied the game with 2.6 seconds left in regulation, but Ottawa’s Mike Hoffman was the only one of 12 shootout shooters to find the back of the net and that gave the Senators the extra point. Ottawa took a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals 39 seconds apart just past the halfway point of the first period, scored by Matt Duchene and Derick Brassard. Sean Couturier cut the lead in half 3:53 into the second period, but Chris DiDomenico restored the two- goal advantage with 6:58 left in the frame. Claude Giroux started the late comeback with 3;45 left in the third, and with an extra attacker out, Patrick potted the game-tying goal in the waning moments. After a scoreless overtime, the goaltenders ruled the shootout until Hoffman’s tally in round six. Alex Lyon got the start and turned away 20 of 23 shots through two periods before Michal Neuvirth took over and stopped the six shots he faced in the third and overtime. Craig Anderson made several outstanding stops among his 33 saves. Stars of the Game: 1 – Mike Hoffman; 2 – Matt Duchene; 3 – Nolan Patrick.

NOTABLES Per the NHL stats bureau, Nolan Patrick’s game winning goal (official time 19:57) was the third-latest regulation game-tying goal by a rookie in franchise history. The two ahead of him are Freddy Meyer at 19:59 of the third period on March 8, 2006 and Bill Lesuk at 19:58 on January 23, 1971.

The Flyers had a total of 79 shot attempts (36 on goal, 24 blocked and 19 missed) to 44 for Ottawa (29 on goal, 8 blocked and 7 missed). All but one skater registered at least one SOG; Patrick led the team with five on goal while Provorov had nine attempts, seven of which were blocked by the Senators.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT SCORING CHANGE: Nolan Patrick’s game-tying goal Saturday was adjusted to credit an assist to Jake Voracek, which removed an assist from Travis Konecny. Voracek’s stat line is changed to one assist on the game, while Konecny’s is reduced to two assists in the contest.

Despite dropping their last four in a row (0-3-1), the Flyers are 16-8-2 in their last 26 games since December 4, the date of a win over Calgary that marked the end of their 10-game winless streak. They are currently one point behind NYI for the final playoff spot in the East but have two games in hand on the Isles, and are two points ahead of Carolina while holding one game in hand.

The Flyers are allowing an average of 29.9 shots per game, which is fourth fewest in the league.

Jake Voracek has five points (1G, 4A) in his last three games and has risen to the team lead in scoring with 10 goals and 51 assists for 61 points, which is good for a share of third overall in the league. He leads the league by seven in the assists category. Voracek needs seven assists to tie his career high of 59 in a full season, set back in 2014-15.

Claude Giroux is tied for fifth in the NHL in scoring with was tied for sixth in the league in scoring entering last night’s games with 15 goals and 43 assists for 58 points. Giroux is 58 percent in the faceoff circle this year, which is among the top five in the NHL among players that have taken at least 400 faceoffs. Giroux was tabbed as the Flyers’ representative to the 2018 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend, where he participated in the puckhandling challenge in the skills competition and scored a goal in the Metro’s loss to the Atlantic. It was his fifth All-Star appearance.

Travis Konecny saw a five-game goal-scoring streak (5G) and a six-game point-scoring streak (5-2-7) come to an end on Thursday, but got right back in the point column with two assists on Saturday. In his last 16 games, Konecny has seven goals and eight assists for 14 points, including four game-winning goals. Konecny scored the game-winning OT goal in each of the Flyers’ last two wins, with both of those goals coming 27 seconds into the OT period on the only shot in the OT for either team. Per the NHL stats bureau, Konecny is only the second Flyer to score back-to-back GWGs in overtime; Sami Kapanen did it on 12/28/05 at Atlanta and 12/29/05 at Carolina. Since 1997-98, only one other NHL player has done it with both goals coming on the only shot in the overtime period – Todd Bertuzzi did so for Detroit on Dec. 11, 2009 vs. Anaheim and Dec. 12, 2009 vs. Nashville.

Sean Couturier continues to lead the Flyers in goals with 27, which ties him for third in the NHL with four other players. He has demolished his previous career high of 15 goals for an entire season, and his previous career high of 39 points in a complete season has also fallen by the wayside. He set a new career high with his fifth game-winning goal on Jan. 18 vs. Toronto and is four short of his career high for assists in a season, which was 28 set in 2015-16. Couturier is also a plus-18, which leads the team and ranks in the league’s top 25. The Flyers haven’t had a player rated plus-17 or higher at the end of the season since 2011-12, when Couturier was a plus-18 and Scott Hartnell was a plus-19. The best year-end plus-minus for the Flyers since that season was Couturier’s plus-12 a year ago.
