THE ELLESMERE ECHO Thursday 21st March 2019 7 THE ELLESMERE ECHO Local Scene Thursday 21st March 2019 5 LITTLE RAKAIA BOATING CLUB Inc COMMUNITY BOAT RAMP

The little Rakaia Boating Club Inc is seeking to raise the substantial funds required to complete the repair of the community boat ramp and associated works. Little Rakaia Boating Club Inc, was incorporated in 1965. It is a community-based non-profit club that was formed to help facilitate the safe boating and access to the Little Rakaia Huts lagoon, the and the Pacific Ocean. One of the objectives was to construct and maintain a boat ramp into the Rakaia lagoon to provide safe launching. The club has established a double boat launching ramp into the Rakaia lagoon for the use of the club’s members and the local and wider community. The boat ramp is the only registered ramp between Akaroa and Timaru. No. M12197. Over the years the boat ramp and associated works have sustained damage and undergone repairs, all of which were funded and managed by the Little Rakaia Boating Club. Unfortunately, in 2008’ a major flood coinciding with a large storm basically destroyed the structure and it has continued to deteriorate over the past 11 years. In 2016 an engineer was engaged to look at a design to repair the ramp and associated works. The estimate pro- duced from the plans was substantial: $780,000. This is a figure that is way beyond the meagre funds that the boat club receives from its membership and donations for use of the boat ramp. The local Selwyn District Council was approached to see if they would help with the financing. While the SDC do support the project, they will not support it by way of monetary funding even though it is in the Selwyn District and a great asset to the community. The area is widely used by many in the Selwyn community and people from all over New Zea- land: quite a number of visitors from overseas visit and use the area also. Last year (2018) the club managed to fund and complete the first two stages of the re-build project for a cost of $103,000.00. The remaining work to complete, the re-build of the boat ramp itself, is estimated to be in the cost range of $365,000.00 The club would like to get the project completed and is endeavouring to raise the funds required by way of donations, grants and other fund-raising opportuni- ties.
