OUT NORTH: MNLGBTQ HISTORY Premieres OCTOBER 16 AT 8PM
Joining TPT’s long line of historical Minnesota documentaries, Out North: MNLGBTQ History chronicles the stories of the people and places that figure into the state’s early battles for LGBTQ equal rights. Many of these groundbreaking struggles rippled across the country, Jack Baker and Michael McConnell photo courtesy of Angela Jimenez setting the stage for national legal protections and amendments.
Who were the pioneers of politics, empowerment, and pride in our local communities? Where were the places that LGBTQ people gathered long before gay venues were mainstream? While urban living presented its own challenges, what was it like to be queer on the prairie in greater Minnesota? Out North sheds light on the hidden history of our neighbors, friends, and family members from the diverse spectrum of LGBTQ experiences and identities.
“The power of love, in various forms, drives the rise of the LGBTQ community out of the closeted darkness and into the light of day. It is seen in the love and support of family, like the parents of the late Minneapolis City Council member Brian Coyle. The love of self, and the empowerment that comes from it, is a powerful thread in the history of transgender people, such as oral historian Andrea Jenkins and political pioneer Susan Kimberly. Looking for love was dangerous and difficult, and it underscores the historic role of gay bars for an oppressed community. We see the opposite of love in the late 1970s, when voters in Saint Paul opted not to grant LBGTQ people what should have been their basic human rights. But ultimately, love defeats prejudice two decades later in another statewide fight for human rights.”
Jack Baker & Michael McConnell – Daniel Bergin, Director, Out North: MNLGBTQ History wedding photo from the Tretter Collection
“Reflecting on Minnesota’s gay history, I really wanted to find a way to honor LGBTQ predecessors whose efforts paved the way for gay people like myself to live openly. Just a few decades ago, LGBTQ people risked their lives not only to fight for equal rights, but also to publicly express their identities. My hope is that Out North and the film’s mission to honor LGBTQ pioneers will make it easier for others to live openly, and that it will foster greater understanding among the community at large.” – David Piper, Funder

12 /tptpbs @tpt “It is hard to overstate the importance of Out North and the willingness of TPT to create a documentary about the LGBT community in Minnesota. TPT has the credibility, the skills, and the vision to collect stories in ways that an individual researcher could not do. I think everyone who participated felt this was a unique opportunity to record our stories and make them available in a way we had never experienced before. The credibility that comes with public television, the breadth of exposure that comes from being broadcast, and the impact of editing and research combine to make Out North so much more than the sum of its parts.” – Lisa Vecoli, Curator, The Jean-Nickolaus Tretter Collection in Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Studies An early Gay Pride march in downtown Minneapolis photo: from the (University of Minnesota) Tretter Collection in GLBT Studies at the University of Minnesota Libraries
