BSCBAA FOURTH BOYKIN SPANIEL SUPPORTED ENTRY SHOW WRITTEN BY MICHLE MACHALA

The club just held our 4th BSCBAA Supported Entry, the second one this year, it was in Belton, Texas on October 15 in conjunction with Bell County Kennel Club and Sporting Dogs Seminar offered with The Chisholm Trail Cluster 2015. The weather couldn’t of been more beautiful. It was a fabulous weekend and a warm break for the New Yorkers. We would like to thank our Judge, Mrs. Marilyn Pipes. We had entries from New York, Florida and Texas with a 14 Boykin Spaniel entry.

The BSCBAA members came through with wonderful sponsorship donations toward our supported entry awards which were Rosettes and monogrammed towels. The Bell County Kennel Club awarded Slip Leads for the BOB, BOS, Winners Bitch and Winners Dog. There were standard classes featuring Boykin that were puppies to Veterans. Our youngest Boykin Spaniel shown was 6 months old and the oldest was our veteran at 12 1/2 years. The facilities were nice and provided a wonderful environment. A dinner hosted by Louise Jones of Florida was held the Friday night prior to the supported entry show where all had a great time.

The entire weekend went great from the dinners to the best fellowship ever and of course our loveable little brown friends. It has been my privilege and a pleasure to be the chair of the show committee. It really turned out great due to all the donations, support and help from Ginger Hurley, Melody Bacon, Greg Copeland, Louise Jones, Rose Leale and Jackie DeAngelo. We are looking forward to the upcoming Annual 2016 Spring Show, sight to be determined and 2016 Fall Show in Savannah GA.

Over the 4 day Chisholm Trail Cluster there were 4 different BOB winners! Lark from the classes, Hunter, Luke and Zoe. Group 1 in NOH by Zoe, Group 3 in Veterans by Jagger, Group 4 in NOS by Peace and a Group Cut in the main event by Luke!

The following are the results of the Supported Entry October 15, 2015: BOB—GCH Top Gun Lone Wolf and made the group cut, BOS— GCH Texas Trace Kelley’s Chamizal Treaty with a Group 4 in NOS, BW— Texas Trace Hudson Bend , SD—GCH Hollow Creek’s Jagger Meister and best Vet. w/Group 3 at 12 1/2 years old, SB—GCH Texas Trace Yellow Rose RA CGCA BN and WB—Texas Trace Always Sunny in Kemah.

The HOWL-O-WEEN Fest is a dog event focused on attracting families and their furry friends. Held the weekend before Halloween in Cypress, Texas, HOWL-O-WEEN Fest is always great fun and well-attended. As in years past, our booth was sponsored by the Boykin Spaniel Club & Breeders Association of America along with Texas Trace Boykins to benefit Boykin Spaniel Rescue. BSCBAA board member Ginger Hurley organized the BSCBAA booth and we all helped provide trick-or-treat candy for the kids and doggie treats for their canine friends. Representing the BSCBAA we had several Boykins present during the day with their owners which included members and BSCBAA Board members who took turns manning the BSCBAA Booth throughout the day. How-be-it a bit rainy, we all managed with great fun. Boykin Spaniel Rescue is among the ten Rescue groups to receive a prorata share of the event donation proceeds. The HOWL-O-WEEN Fest is one of the finest, best organized, nicest, most well-attended dog event of its kind. Pictures are below.

They compared health outcomes for dogs who were neutered early (before 1 year of age), neutered late (after 1 year of age), or left intact. The results were fascinating: timing The Boykin Spaniel Standard of spay and neuter significantly affected the risk of a dog developing serious health problems. This ISSUE 19 October, 2015 information has implications for both the practice of veterinary medicine in the US and our under- standing of the role of gonadal hormones in human health. Boykin Spaniel Rescue Published in the February 2013 issue of PLOS One, this study showed that early neutering more than doubled the risk of hip dysplasia in male, but not female golden . Early neutering also signifi- cantly increased the risk of both cranial cruciate ligament tear (CCL) and lymphosarcoma (LSA) in dogs of both sexes. In female dogs, late neutering also increased the risk of hemangiosarcoma (HSA) and mast cell tumor (MCT). There were no mast cell tumors in intact female dogs.

For decades, spaying and neutering prior to sexual maturity became the default recommendation of the veterinary profession to address pet overpopulation in the United States. Consensus opinion is still that spay and neuter remain the most effective means to control the pet population. What is at stake here is balancing population control with optimal health in pet dogs, and this research suggests timing of spay and neuter may be a means of accomplishing this goal.

Because questions remain, the AKC Canine Health Foundation recently funded a second phase of this If you are interested in saving a research topic. The additional work will evaluate Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs and Boykin, visit the Boykin Spaniel Dachshunds. Rottweilers, Chihuahuas, Standard and Miniature Poodles will be included if Rescue - link is below: resources and patient data are available. The expectation is that by including multiple breeds in phase two, researchers will be able to develop a generalized understanding of the impact of early spay and www.boykinspanielrescue.org/ neuter on disease risk in dogs. This in turn will enable veterinarians and breeders to make data-driven Or email recommendations regarding timing of spay/neuter procedures to reduce the risk of development of [email protected] multiple devastating diseases.

This work was funded by AKC Canine Health Foundation grant 1488-A. The continuing work is funded by grant 1840.
