  • Originally Adaptated from French and Flemish Chansons, the Canzon Is a Type of Instrumental Music That Was Popularized in the 16Th and 17Th Centuries
Originally adaptated from French and Flemish chansons, the canzon is a type of instrumental music that was popularized in the 16th and 17th centuries. Most often characterized with the opening dactylic rhythm (long, short, short), the canzon da sonar (chanson to be played) became independent of earlier vocal models in the 1570s, and by 1600 had become the most important form of instrumental music in Italy. Ensemble canzoni were composed by all sorts of musicians—from the master composer/organist Giovanni Gabrieli with his multi- choired works for the ceremonies at San Marco in Venice, to lesser-known Northern European composers like Erasmus Widmann, who spent most of his career working as court musician in the region of Germany near Nuremberg. Widmann’s canzoni, included in his Gantz Neue Cantzon, Intraden, Balletten und Couranten (Nuremberg, 1618) were considered his finest instrumental works. Strikingly similar to the Venetian canzoni of earlier decades, these canzoni were described by composer Michael Praetorius—the greatest musical academic of the day—as “fresh, joyful, and fast.” While most of the Venetian canzoni of the period are written in four parts, Widmann composed his instrumental music in five parts much like the music of his contemporaries Brade and Simpson. This scoring, with two equal soprano parts, makes Widmann’s canzoni particularly well suited to adaptation by the modern brass quintet. Charles Whittenberg's Little Fantasy on Bach's Advent-Chorale: “Nun komm, der heiden Heiland” (Cantata #62) had its premiere performance at Philharmonic Hall, Lincoln Center on December 31, 1968. After a statement of the Chorale theme, Whittenberg develops the material in a brilliant fashion.

  • Corelli'stonalmodels
Intégral 31 (2017) pp. 31–49 Corelli's Tonal Models: The Trio Sonata Op.3, No. 1* by Christopher Wintle Abstract. British thought is typically pragmatic, so a British reception of the work of Heinrich Schenker will concern itself with concrete procedure at the expense of hypothetical abstraction. This is especially important when dealing with the work of Arcangelo Corelli, whose work, along with that of others in the Franco-Italian tradi- tion, holds the key to common-practice tonality. The approach of the British author is thus to construct a set of concrete linear-harmonic models derived from the fore- ground and middleground techniques of Schenker and to demonstrate their han- dling throughout the four movements of a representative trio sonata (Op. 3, No. 1). In this essentially “bottom-up” project, detailed discussion of structure readily merges into that of style and genre, including dance and fugue. The text is supported by many examples and includes a reprint of the trio sonata itself. Keywords and phrases: Arcangelo Corelli, Heinrich Schenker, trio sonata, tonal models, fugue. • Music and Combinations
Tom Johnson Music and Combinations Lecture presented Dec. 13, 2003 in a colloquium on Arts and Sciences sponsored by the association La Métive in La Creuse (France) Combinations for String Quartet (2003) contains five movements, and each of these contains all the combinations of something. As usual, I wanted the music to know what it was doing, to be correct and complete in a rigorous sense, and this is one way of achieving this. The theory of combinations is a totally explored mathematical discipline, as we have known for more than a century how to calculate all kinds of combinations and probabilities, and how to prove all of this. So what I say about my composition can not have fundamental significance for mathematics. I can, however, demonstrate that new questions arrive when one wants to go inside some set of combinations, to see how they come together, to observe the many symmetries within them, to find the best sequence for them, to consider how they might sound, to turn them into music. Combinations of ABCD Permutations The first movement had to do with the permutations of four notes (A,B,C,D). I wanted to use all 24 permutations, but I also wanted to find how the permutations could be combined so that all four notes would be present in four instruments at every moment. The most obvious solution was to let the four musicians all play the same thing starting at different points. Of course, one may change the sequence of the lines and still have the same four permutations: ABCD BCDA CDAB DABC This was not musically very interesting, since everyone was essentially playing the same rising scale, so I looked for other possibilities.
