Support!

Aloha Menlo College, As a successful homecoming week comes to a close, I hope you all see that Menlo is a place that is truly unique Inspirational because of how close knit we are to each other. We are one big family and support each other in times of need and Quote celebrate during all our successes. I find it a little fitting that we are represented by an Oak “The best thing to Tree because without many components there can be no hold onto in life tree. Without branches, leaves, roots, bark, and acorns, is each other.” there is no Oak Tree. Our family here on campus really has many components and that’s why we are something that is so unique. We function as a whole and depend on -Aundrey Hepburn each other constantly. I hope you all see how close knit we are and take the bonds we have made and will continue to make to heart and treasure them as we go on in life. For many of you guys, it will be four years together and I would suggest treasuring every moment during your time here. People here are great and I’ve truly found people I consider to be “TRUE FRIENDS.” I hope you all find the same. Go OAKS!

Grief and Loss

The topic of grief and loss is a very touchy subject and one that people wish they never have to go through. However, it is a part of life. The loss can range from getting fired from a job, losing your home, getting injured due to a sport and no longer being able to play, or losing a loved one. Our natural reaction to such a traumatic change is grief. Grief is an intense emotional reaction, which can affect a person mentally and physically. There is a five-stage process to grief known as the Kubler- Ross Model. The series of emotional stages are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. People dealing with grief will tend to feel all these emotions, but it is not limited to only these and can occur in any order. If you know someone who is dealing with grief, the best thing you can do is to be there for him or her and to listen. Allow them to express what they are feeling and encourage them to be patient with himself or herself. They do not have to discuss everything at once, just let them know that you are there for them and that it is okay to cry. In addition, do not tell them how they should feel or that you know how they feel unless you have experienced their loss yourself.

The Peer Counselors are here to help and listen to the students of Menlo College. If you are experiencing any type of sadness (it does not have to be related to loss), we are here to listen and help you to the best of our abilities. A great resource for dealing with grief due to losing a loved one is Kara, the grief support organization located in Palo Alto. Their services include easing the pain of losing your loved one and helping you feel that you are not alone. Kara is running an event called “Kara’s Walk to Remember” on September 28 in Palo Alto. This event will allow you to walk in honor and in memory of a loved one or walk to support friends, family members, and co-workers grieving a loss. The Psychology Club will be hosting this event and will be pleased for others to join in. It is a wonderful opportunity and will allow you to see that you are not alone and people want to help.
