COLLEGE GOLF PREP T’Wolves taking steps forward Whann helps FGC place sixth last weekend at the Start 2 Finish Golf Classic. By ERIC JACKSON ejackson@lakecityreporter

It’s going to take time to build a reputable golf program at Florida Gateway College. Yet the Timberwolves continue to take the steps necessary – slowly transforming the previously dor- mant program into one of the better junior colleges in North Florida. After finishing last in each of their events during the fall, FGC’s golf team improved by capturing sixth place in last weekend’s Start 2 Finish Golf Classic in Lake Wales. “For us, being young team and a start-up program, that’s pretty good,” FGC head coach John Reger said. Against some four-year schools like Webber and Saint Thomas University, the Timberwolves fared well in their first event of the year. FGC was led by Jacob Whann, the team’s No.1 golfer who transferred in from Andrews College. Whann anchored his team, tying for 11th place overall with a combined score of 229. “Jacob played well,” Reger said of Whann, who finished the first round Photos By JORDAN KROEGER/Lake City Reporter with an impressive 71 score. “The Columbia third baseman Tate Worrell slides safely into home plate for the second of two runs during the sixth inning Tuesday first round he shot one under par night against Gainesville.
