The principal cause for Southgate’s consistent sequence of successes was the fact that we had bowlers who could take wickets. The myth has always seemed to be that batsmen win games by scoring runs. But, as has been touched on several times in the past, unless you can bowl sides out – or at least put sufficient pressure on the early batsmen that they need to take risks to push the score along – you will not win games, especially on today’s covered pitches. Many congratulations go to captain Alvin Durgacharan, who played a full captain’s role both on and off the field, for leading a rejuvenated side back into the premier division for 2008 as victors of the 2nd Division. The platform to success therefore hinged on the bowling resources and few would deny that the acquisition of Glen Read, a former Durham University and Sussex 2nd XI opening bowler, whose consistent line and length, until the end of July when injury forced him out of the attack, meant there was no hiding place from a storming Faisal Mir. Faisal took three hauls of seven wickets, a six and a five to finish with 52 1st XI league wickets at an average of 14.38, the most by any quick bowler for Southgate. As a result, he was the unquestioned winner of the Hawker Trophy. Mir was further supported by paceman Fawad Mullahzada with 30 wickets. The loss of Jamie Jouning through injury after only six games put a big onus on Alvin Durgacharan who readily responded by scoring 473 runs with five scores over 50, while Tuan Hadgie, Ben Hartman, Jeremy Dangerfield and Tom Allen all exceeded 200, Jeremy scoring his maiden League hundred. Rashid Mullahzada became the club’s youngest 1st XI debutant at the age of 14 when he played against South Hampstead. The 2nd XI enjoyed a consolidating season finishing seventh in the 2nd XI top division. This was largely due to Jamie Wilson’s powerful batting, with over 400 runs including a hundred against Shepherd’s Bush and 93 against Stanmore. Strong batting support came from Paddy Robinson (344 runs) and over 200 apiece from Dave Woffinden and Bill Dean. Wickets were harder to come by than runs and Adrian “Sage” Carr was the principal wicket taker with 25 at a miserly average of 14. Promotion to the top division also came the way of the 3rd XI who started with a blaze and managed to maintain sufficient momentum to take a comfortable second place. Again, it was the bowling which underpinned the success of the side, although it would not be unreasonable to remark that the senior pros of captain Roger Hill, Stuart Cradock and Ricky Gunn found their sustained fitness (!) and lengthy experience recognised as assets in an otherwise youthful team. Such was the depth of bowling that seven bowlers took between 10 and 19 wickets, with James McCluskey and John Allen both taking 19. Rashid Mullahzada took two five-wicket hauls and James McCluskey felled Hornsey with a hat-trick. Fionn Webb batted consistently well and exceeded 300 runs including four fifties. 3 The 4th XI closed the season over 50 points clear of the relegation zone although we still struggle to compete as well as we should. The fact that 42 players represented the side gives an indication of its unsettled nature, which made it difficult for Michael Stavri to develop a regular plan of attack. Len Stokes was the leading player during the campaign with 213 runs and 13 wickets, while Ricky Gunn and Glen Read scored centuries, the former being convinced he is the oldest player to achieve this for Southgate. Turning to the social side of 2007, the year commenced as positively as any other with the Club Dinner in March. A dedicated group celebrated the daylight hours with a golf competition at Bush Hill Park Golf Club which preceded a gathering of 63, disappointingly well down on the 150th anniversary 100 tally, when members and their guests enjoyed a traditional and enjoyable dinner. We were entertained by speeches from The Walker Ground Manager Steve Martin who reflected on his 25 years at Southgate, and former Southgate cricketer James Mosley, now playing cricket and golf at Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire. Mike Stavri once again made a brave fist of the Fantasy League again which, as ever, added a novel side attraction to our league matches. Many thanks, too, to Dan Ashley whose weekly results bulletins were much enjoyed and which serve a useful source of reference information for the likes of this annual publication. My personal appreciation goes to Alan Rolt, not just for wrestling with the club’s friendly fixture list but for being alone in having produced a report for last season, in this case for the Sunday 2nd XI, whose exploits are paraded later in this volume. Reflecting on the averages, …..72 played 5 or more games; overall total of 134. Alvin Durgacharan scored the most runs (765) and Faisal Mir 714, to accompany his 60 wickets. Fawad Mullahzada took 49 wickets, younger brother Rashid took 41 and Adrian Carr 40. Career landmarks: Congratulations to Len Stokes on his 500th rabbit for Southgate and 7,000 runs for the club, Jeremy Dangerfield 11,000 club runs (including 4,000 in the 1st XI League), Alvin Durgacharan 9,000 runs, Richard Bishop-Laggett 6,000 and Ben Hartman 5,000. Career averages for all those for whom figures have so far been calculated begin on page 31. If your name doesn’t appear it’s because I haven’t quite got round to it yet – or 2007 was your first season, in which case the season’s averages will reveal all you need to know. As a side attraction I have added a survey of who may be Southgate’s best all-round cricketers. Was Fred Lewis (1879-1967) Southgate’s most accomplished all-rounder?
