SCC 2007 Season Review 2 THE 2007 SEASON

Ricky Gunn

The year of the meerkat …

When the 2008 season recommences, all three of Southgate’s Middlesex League XIs will be in the line-up of their respective top divisions. The principal cause for Southgate’s consistent sequence of successes was the fact that we had bowlers who could take wickets. The myth has always seemed to be that batsmen win games by scoring runs. But, as has been touched on several times in the past, unless you can bowl sides out – or at least put sufficient pressure on the early batsmen that they need to take risks to push the score along – you will not win games, especially on today’s covered pitches.

Many congratulations go to captain Alvin Durgacharan, who played a full captain’s role both on and off the field, for leading a rejuvenated side back into the premier division for 2008 as victors of the 2nd Division. The platform to success therefore hinged on the bowling resources and few would deny that the acquisition of Glen Read, a former Durham University and Sussex 2nd XI opening bowler, whose consistent line and length, until the end of July when injury forced him out of the attack, meant there was no hiding place from a storming Faisal Mir. Faisal took three hauls of seven wickets, a six and a five to finish with 52 1st XI league wickets at an average of 14.38, the most by any quick bowler for Southgate. As a result, he was the unquestioned winner of the Hawker Trophy. Mir was further supported by paceman Fawad Mullahzada with 30 wickets. The loss of Jamie Jouning through injury after only six games put a big onus on Alvin Durgacharan who readily responded by scoring 473 runs with five scores over 50, while Tuan Hadgie, Ben Hartman, Jeremy Dangerfield and Tom Allen all exceeded 200, Jeremy scoring his maiden League hundred. Rashid Mullahzada became the club’s youngest 1st XI debutant at the age of 14 when he played against South Hampstead.

The 2nd XI enjoyed a consolidating season finishing seventh in the 2nd XI top division. This was largely due to Jamie Wilson’s powerful batting, with over 400 runs including a hundred against Shepherd’s Bush and 93 against Stanmore. Strong batting support came from Paddy Robinson (344 runs) and over 200 apiece from Dave Woffinden and Bill Dean. Wickets were harder to come by than runs and Adrian “Sage” Carr was the principal taker with 25 at a miserly average of 14.

Promotion to the top division also came the way of the 3rd XI who started with a blaze and managed to maintain sufficient momentum to take a comfortable second place. Again, it was the bowling which underpinned the success of the side, although it would not be unreasonable to remark that the senior pros of captain Roger Hill, Stuart Cradock and Ricky Gunn found their sustained fitness (!) and lengthy experience recognised as assets in an otherwise youthful team. Such was the depth of bowling that seven bowlers took between 10 and 19 wickets, with James McCluskey and John Allen both taking 19. Rashid Mullahzada took two five-wicket hauls and James McCluskey felled Hornsey with a hat-trick. Fionn Webb batted consistently well and exceeded 300 runs including four fifties.

The 4th XI closed the season over 50 points clear of the relegation zone although we still struggle to compete as well as we should. The fact that 42 players represented the side gives an indication of its unsettled nature, which made it difficult for Michael Stavri to develop a regular plan of attack. Len Stokes was the leading player during the campaign with 213 runs and 13 wickets, while Ricky Gunn and Glen Read scored centuries, the former being convinced he is the oldest player to achieve this for Southgate.

Turning to the social side of 2007, the year commenced as positively as any other with the Club Dinner in March. A dedicated group celebrated the daylight hours with a golf competition at Bush Hill Park Golf Club which preceded a gathering of 63, disappointingly well down on the 150th anniversary 100 tally, when members and their guests enjoyed a traditional and enjoyable dinner. We were entertained by speeches from The Walker Ground Manager Steve Martin who reflected on his 25 years at Southgate, and former Southgate cricketer James Mosley, now playing cricket and golf at Hebden Bridge in West .

Mike Stavri once again made a brave fist of the Fantasy League again which, as ever, added a novel side attraction to our league matches. Many thanks, too, to Dan Ashley whose weekly results bulletins were much enjoyed and which serve a useful source of reference information for the likes of this annual publication. My personal appreciation goes to Alan Rolt, not just for wrestling with the club’s friendly fixture list but for being alone in having produced a report for last season, in this case for the Sunday 2nd XI, whose exploits are paraded later in this volume.

Reflecting on the averages, …..72 played 5 or more games; overall total of 134. Alvin Durgacharan scored the most runs (765) and Faisal Mir 714, to accompany his 60 wickets. Fawad Mullahzada took 49 wickets, younger brother Rashid took 41 and Adrian Carr 40.

Career landmarks: Congratulations to Len Stokes on his 500th rabbit for Southgate and 7,000 runs for the club, Jeremy Dangerfield 11,000 club runs (including 4,000 in the 1st XI League), Alvin Durgacharan 9,000 runs, Richard Bishop-Laggett 6,000 and Ben Hartman 5,000. Career averages for all those for whom figures have so far been calculated begin on page 31. If your name doesn’t appear it’s because I haven’t quite got round to it yet – or 2007 was your first season, in which case the season’s averages will reveal all you need to know. As a side attraction I have added a survey of who may be Southgate’s best all-round cricketers. Was Fred Lewis (1879-1967) Southgate’s most accomplished all-rounder? See page 33 … Ricky Gunn

Alan Rolt

Out of nineteen scheduled fixtures:

Played 5 (if you include August Bank Holiday Monday) Won 2 Lost 3 Drew 0 Thankfully rained off before we turned up with only seven or eight players: 3 Cried off by Southgate because of insufficient numbers: 7 (including the debacle against Welwyn Garden City) Cried off by opposition due to insufficient numbers: 1 Cancelled due to Middlesex CCC or re-arranged cup matches: 3

The above set of statistics probably says it all: a season best forgotten.

It didn’t start well: crying-off the first Sunday at local rivals Enfield. We eventually got going on the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, away at Old Albanians. At least we had eleven players, if only two cars, well one car and a van. It was probably just as well we had John Allen’s van. It meant as many players as possible got into the one car, all the kit and two volunteers, or rather volunteered players, into the back of the van, with John and myself in the front.

We all arrived at Old Albanians’ excellent ground and facilities. It was Old Albanians’ only side out that day with a mixture of their Saturday First and Second XIs (we were very much a Sunday 2nd XI) and therefore, probably one of those tosses you would prefer not to win in a Sunday friendly. Needless to say, I won the toss! After a fair bit of thought, I decided to follow the Bob Cole rule: when you’re nowhere near as strong as the opposition, bat first if you have the option and try and bat for as long as possible to restrict the opposition’s time to get the runs, thus making a game of it.

Unfortunately, the game plan did not quite work out, as despite a plumb batting track, a useful Old Albanian bowling attack meant we were all out for around 110 at about 4.15pm. If nothing else, at least this allowed for plenty of time to enjoy the excellent tea (an essential part of Sunday cricket). After tea, we did make some early inroads into the Old Albanian batting line-up. Unfortunately, I did not yet have a Southgate scorebook at the time. Therefore, we were using a sheet carefully pulled out of one the Saturday scorebooks, which was passed on to Ricky Gunn a.s.a.p. [mislaid but finally located in April 2008! Ed.] However, my recollection was that at one stage we had them around 40-odd for 4 and then about 70-odd for 5. However, in the end Old Albanians were safely home either five or six wickets down just at the start of the final 20 overs. Therefore, not a complete disgrace and at least, or at least I thought at the time, the Sunday 2nd XI’s season was up and running. However, we did not have another game until the start of June.

24

Next up was Harrow-on-the-Hill, a strong wandering side, amongst whom I have a number of close friends, having been invited on their Cotswold and Shropshire tours for many years.

It was very remiss of me, but I did not make a note of who won the toss, but I seem to recall that we were inserted. Whatever the outcome of the toss, Southgate batted first. Scott McGuinness, Nadim Malik, Mark Golding and Adam McEachern all batted well and got themselves into the twenties, but sadly, none went on to make a big score (that said, Adam may well have done, if yours truly had not run him out! Many apologies, Adam). We managed to get somewhere around the 150 to 155 mark in total. Sadly, there was apparently no-one else in the side remotely capable of undertaking the scoring duties and the scorebook went completely awry while I was padding up. (Oh for the days of Debbie Savin, almost certainly the best and definitely the most attractive scorer the Sunday 2nd XI ever had!) The only two Southgate players who could score, Mo and Joe Gandhi, were both playing for Harrow-on-the-Hill. (Both are longstanding members of Harrow-on-the-Hill, having felt that it was unlikely that they would ever have a decent opportunity in one of the Southgate Sunday adult sides). With no other concrete detail, we were obliged to settle for the lowest option of 151 all out.

After tea, once again we got a few early wickets, with Harrow-on-the-Hill 59 for 3 at one stage thanks to good bowling stints from James Dulay-Jefferson and Adam McEachern. However, 151 was unlikely to be a challenging total. Their numbers three and five, Paul Baker and Jon Hart, put on 80 for their fourth wicket, although Nadim was extremely unlucky not to pick up the wickets of both batsmen. Mo Gandhi went in to bat with Paul Baker with the score on 139 and saw Harrow-on-the-Hill through to the finish, hitting their winning runs. Another loss, but nevertheless, an enjoyable game and very enjoyable evening, with an excellent curry at Mo and Joe’s parents’ place opposite the ground and at least the Sunday 2nd XI had played another game.

Surprisingly, we played again the following weekend, but not without upsetting Chingford CC in the process. The original plan was, assuming Southgate overcame St Margaretsbury in the 1st round of the Evening Standard Trophy, our 1st XI would play their 1st XI at home in the 2nd round, with our 2nd XI playing their 2nd XI at Chingford (yes, there is a large amount of planning that goes into the following summer’s matches). Sadly, it did not work out as planned: our 1st XI did not make the 2nd round, we did not have any car drivers to fulfil the 2nd XI fixture and not surprisingly, with their 1st XI away at St. Margaretsbury, Chingford 2nd XI turned down the offer to play at Southgate.

Upminster 2nd XI came up through the CCC fixture bureau. However, it was their second XI, as Upminster 1st XI were still competing in the Evening Standard, and Southgate’s only side on the day was a mixture of our Sunday 1st and 2nd XIs. Upminster won the toss and elected to bat. Unfortunately, having Omair Ali to open the bowling was a little too much for Upminster 2nd XI: in less than three overs, they were 11 for 2. Fearing a ruined game, Omair came off after two overs with figures of 2 for 7. We then operated with mixture of spin and medium pace trying to ensure that Upminster reached a total that was worth chasing without letting them get out of sight. While Nick Allen, Nadir Malik and Scott McGuinness all bowled well and picked up wickets, Upminster’s batsmen buckled down and thankfully we were on for a reasonably decent game. Trying to ensure that everyone got a game, Adam McEachern came on after 31 overs and picked up the wicket of their top scoring bat, care of an excellent catch by yours truly (even if I so say myself) at first slip: well I had to do something to make up for the previous Sunday’s run-out! Another wicket each for Nadim and Adam finished the Upminster innings on 164 after 39 overs. After tea, Mark Golding was

25 offered the opportunity to open the batting, but he turned it down, as he did with the number three slot. He opted in the end for number 4. Liam Farrell and Adam Vinson opened the batting, with a request from the skipper that they tactfully got themselves out if they got to fifty. Liam duly obliged, but Adam was unable to do so! We won by nine wickets and I suspect that Mark Golding, if nothing else, will remember in future not to turn down the chance to open on the front square!

Sadly, the Second XI did not play again until early July: Church End at the Wilf Slack Memorial Ground. With no cars whatsoever, I was absolutely amazed that ten out of eleven expected players turned up, including a brand new player to the club: William Gilbert. The opposition very kindly donated an eleventh man. I won the toss and we batted first. Unfortunately, only Nadeem Mazhar and William Gilbert got into double figures with 49 and 64 respectively, and we were all out for 156. However, congratulations to William for a fifty on debut for Southgate. The pick of our bowlers were Ram Loganathan and in particular, Owen Bradley with 2 for 16 in six overs. However, thanks to a wide variety of rubbish from our other bowlers, Church End’s young side got the runs without too much trouble in less than 30 overs.

Unfortunately, the above fixture on 8th July marked the end of the Sunday 2nd XI’s season! The Chess Valley League had already kicked-off by this point, but with a complete lack of interest from the vast majority of club members. Our youngsters were called upon to make the Chess Valley League numbers, invariably had sod-all of a game and subsequently disappeared from the club. Needless to say, this was hardly the ideal way to bring our older colts into adult cricket.

That said, the prevailing attitude these days appears to be that if it isn’t league cricket (and in particular, Saturday league cricket), then it’s not worth playing. This is apparent even at the lower end of the club, where the preference, despite may be not being selected for the Saturday, appears to be against turning out in a Sunday friendly, even when it’s on the front square. Evidently, it’s just not worthwhile! (Dog-crap park on a Saturday v. the Front Square on a Sunday and dog-crap park appears to be winning!) The idea of playing to enjoy the game seems to be disappearing from the club: Saturday league is the only thing that matters and that seems now to be an extension of the Monday to Friday, 9 till 5, drudgery, only rather than being paid, one is paying not to enjoy one’s self!

However, I will finish on a more cheery note, namely beating the Old Citizens on the August Bank Holiday Monday. (However, even then we ended up one short on the morning of the game, so I had to rope in my youngest brother to complete side.) The Old Cits won the toss and inserted Southgate. Lenny Stokes, after scoring about 10 in nearly 2½ hours opening the batting on the Saturday, appeared to think that this was just what was required on a Bank Holiday Monday fixture. I thought otherwise and, knowing that he would be getting a bowl after tea, Lenny was duly batting at seven. Lenny consequently adjourned to the bar to drown his sorrows at not being at least in the first four, with something like a dozen pints of lager. Thankfully, he was not required to bat.

The mainstay of our innings was an excellent third wicket partnership of 92 between Alan Jenner and Fionn Webb. Fionn was out for 61. However, Alan was still going well and, in hand with my youngest brother Graham, they put on a further 64 for the fifth wicket, enabling Southgate to declare at 214 for 4 with Alan undefeated on 92. The one mystery was why it was 26 overs before the Old Citizens’ captain brought on their best bowler, but who are we to complain?!

26

The Old Cits had a strong batting line up. However, our opening bowlers brother Graham and Alex Habberley managed to keep things tight with the first thirteen overs going for only 40 or so runs. This enabled me to bring on Delmore Walters and Bahram Khan, who each got a wicket. This brought the Old Citizens danger man Saeed Hatteea to the crease at the start of the final twenty with the Old Citizens requiring a little over 6½ an over and Southgate requiring eight wickets to win. Now was the time to introduce Lenny to the game, or rather perhaps, he was now just about sober enough to introduce to the game. Lenny almost immediately picked up the wicket of Saeed, LBW, for a duck. About forty-five minutes later, it was game over with the Old Citizens all out for 125 and Lenny returning the figures of 6.4- 2-9-6! (Nevertheless, in the bar afterwards, he still managed to complain about not having a bat and there has subsequently been plenty of e-mail banter between Lenny and the Old Cits over the autumn and winter!)

The lack of a Team Secretary last season meant life was even harder than usual for the captains of the lower sides in the club, especially for Mike on a Saturday and myself on a Sunday and I don’t think either of us particularly enjoyed the summer. For me, except for the Old Citizens game, a season best forgotten. Thankfully, Lenny has taken the Team Secretary role on for the forthcoming summer, along with the Saturday 4th XI and Sunday 2nd XI captaincy. I wish him well and I hope somewhat more Sunday cricket is played at Southgate this coming season: there will certainly be enough games on the fixture card.

Ron Hewit is brought out to bat.

By the end of the school summer term the number of active colts between the ages of 8 and 15 totalled 112. The Under 15s were runners up to Cockfosters in the Middlesex East Pool 1 Division 2. Rashid Mullahzada hit 106 not out against Edmonton and 97 against a weak Southgate Compton side – against whom he also took 5-0. Partha Dave was a dependable top order batsman who could also bowl useful leg-breaks. Kareem Hassanin showed particular promise with his slow-left arm bowling and could also hit the ball hard. Daniel Simms and Paul Lassman displayed sense and maturity whilst batting and Paul flighted his leg-breaks with consistent accuracy. The Under 13s ((Pool 1 Division 2) fought off strong competition from Finchley and Potters Bar to win their Division. The side reached the last eight of the Middlesex competition before losing to a very well-drilled and capable Sunbury side. Josh Berman batted and bowled with consistent success, Ashley Sivarajah was also an effective all-rounder, while Mark Hughes had the makings of a solid batsman. The Under 11s ((Pool 1 Division 2) came 4th out of 6 which was disappointing following their success as Under 10s the previous summer. Only Shiv-raj Sharma came out with any real credit (127 runs) and kept wicket with alertness, but David Maxted Jones revealed unrealised talent when he produced a match-winning innings at Holtwhites Trinibis. Jack Jacobs was the best all-rounder with 59 runs and 8 wickets but got tied down too often at the crease. Under 10s. Only three fixtures were arranged owing to the lack of someone to manage matches but really promising players were hard to come by. Those who stood out were Amit Chadha whose accurate quick bowling earned him a regular place in the Under 11s, and Francis Thomson also played to good effect. Toby Bamber could hit powerfully at times, and William Dias was always active in the field and bowled with some accuracy.

Colts Awards 2007 Performance: Under 15 Rashid Mullahzada Under 13 Josh Berman Under 11 Shiv-Raj Sharma Under 10 Amit Chadha Endeavour: Under 15 Paul Lassman Under 13 Will Temple Under 11 David Maxted Jones Under 10 William Dias

Caps were awarded to Max Goldbart, Will Temple and Jack Jacobs.

As ever, the Club is especially grateful for the services of Colin Fox, Geoff Slipper, Jeremy Dangerfield and Vernon Dias, plus all the support generously given by a handful of parents who lent a hand on Monday evenings or scoring at matches. The Colts Section would have immense difficulty functioning without John Williams, who in addition to indoor and outdoor coaching and match managing, maintains and purchases the kit, arranges engraving for the awards and travels wherever it is necessary to ensure the season runs smoothly.

We are pleased to announce that Data Connection, an Enfield-based international computer software company, has volunteered to sponsor Southgate Colts in 2008 which will help provide professional coaching and assist with necessary equipment purchases. We should like to record our warmest thanks for their very tangible support.
