AUDITOR: Jorgensen & Co. PRESIDENT’S REPORT

2010 was a successful year for Nelson Basketball on a number of fronts. Individual player development and selection for New Zealand representative teams included Koru Development tour selection for Toma Noguchi, Mitchell Raine and , New Zealand under 19 Junior Tall Black selection for Chris Duthie, selection for New Zealand Tall Ferns, Emerging Tall Ferns and New Zealand under 20 for Jelena Vucinic, New Zealand under 18 men’s and New Zealand Youth Olympic selection for Michael Karena and New Zealand under 18 women’s selection for Summer Roberts. In addition we provided coach, assistant coach, manager and three players to the New Zealand Tall Blacks World Championship campaign in Turkey.

Well done to all those individuals, their coaches, parents and support networks.

The second highlight of the 2010 calendar was the completion, fit-out and use of the Saxton Stadium. It was fully utilised from Monday to Thursday with intermediate, college grades, men’s A & B grades and women’s A & B grades being successfully run there throughout the season. Special thanks go to Steve Fitchett who has been basketball’s representative on the Stadium Committee from its inception through to the present day. Also we would not have been able to use the facility without the hard work of Chris Varcoe and a group of volunteers who constructed and installed the hoops and scoreboards. A sincere thank you to all those involved.

The stadium has been a focal point for spectators, parents, players and administrators with interaction between these different groups and between grades and teams being of significant benefit to junior players and player development. All the competitions have progressed smoothly and special thanks goes to the administration team of Chris Varcoe and Dallas Ward as well as floor controllers, referees and bench personnel. Without the assistance of volunteers the season could not be as successful as it was.

I would also like to personally thank the NBA committee members who once again have volunteered their time for the governance and benefit of Nelson Basketball. Although economically things are relatively tight, we are in a relatively strong position both financially and player numbers wise in comparison to other National Associations. This is due to good direction and governance as well as having many volunteers with a passion for basketball. This year we successfully ran national under 21’s, girls South Island secondary schools and South Island junior secondary schools champs. These were run successfully due once again to the volunteer’s efforts.

Finally and most importantly thanks to all those who have played basketball in Nelson this year from miniball players through to A grade players and representative players. We look forward to an even better 2011.

Rod Baxendine President EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT

Basketball in New Zealand has once again performed exceptionally well on the international stage with a historic series win over Australia to gain the top Oceania seed for the World Championships eventually finishing 12th in the world, a remarkable effort from an under funded sport. The Tall Ferns limited international program still produced excellent results with a win over Japan in a 2-1 series loss. The management of the game nationally has continued to struggle with reduced SPARC funding, the loss and shortage of experienced staff at the NSO and another new CEO still finding his feet.

At the regional level Nelson Basketball has completed a successful year in an environment of uncertainty underlined by the ‘recession’ which has affected business confidence and income streams across the board.

After 5 years in the planning and completion Saxton Stadium came to fruition and unified our leagues creating an inclusive environment with a great atmosphere for our members. Special mention and thanks must be made to Dallas Ward, Operations and Development Manager, for her exceptional ability to endeavour to satisfy teams, coaches and managers requests whilst delivering high quality, robust leagues and unparalleled commitment to league nights. The result of the enthusiastic, passionate, and committed group of volunteer coaches and managers ensured Nelson players continued to shine on the national stage with 10 athletes named in various national sides. The past 12 months have been a very busy time for the Association and we have achieved many of the outcomes, aims and objectives of the reviewed Strategic Plan and also enhanced systems, policies and procedures along the way. As part of the Strategic Plan, Goal 4, Provide opportunities for the growth and development of officials and coaches the Association has entered in to a partnership with SPARC, Marlborough, Buller and West Coast Basketball to employ a full time resource person to attract, train and retain coaches and players and the role will be up and running by mid November. Sport as a whole faces an uncertain future with many of the traditional funding avenues being affected by the downturn in world markets, reducing investments returns and a greater number of organisations looking to secure funds. We acknowledge and thank our funding partners for their involvement in Nelson Basketball and value the relationships created to date and for the faith they display in the sport of basketball in Nelson Tasman.

My thanks to Rod Baxendine, President and the members of the Executive Committee for their contribution to basketball in the past 12 months.

Chris Varcoe Executive Officer

COACHING IN SCHOOLS PROGRAMME 2010 The Nelson Basketball Association’s Coaching in Schools Programme was again contracted to the .

Head Coach, Michael Fitchett, coordinated and assisted members of the Giants in visiting schools in the Nelson and Tasman District. Coaches included , Daryll Jones, , , Michael Harrison, Ben Wright and Josh Bloxham. The programme is offered to all schools in the Association’s catchment area with 28 schools from Clifton Terrace to Moutere and Mapua taking up the offer, running over 10 weeks in Term 1 & 2. These schools took the opportunity to have a Giant visit their school once a week to encourage and coach players who take part in our local competitions. Nelson kids love to identify with their Giant and follow them throughout the season and some of their accomplishments with the Tall Blacks and the NZ Breakers. We are fortunate enough to have such players impressing our youth and providing excellent role models for them.

Along with this programme where teachers can observe the Giants a Getting Started in Coaching course was held in May (after the initial date in March failed to get numbers). This was led by Chris Varcoe to help prepare parents and teachers who volunteer to take school miniball and intermediate teams. This is always well received and starts many parents on their coaching path. REFEREE REPORT

2010 was a successful year for refereeing with all competitions played under the same roof at Saxton Stadium. This allowed referees a chance to develop as a group and individuals. Miniball was the exception, but these competitions still provided suitable training and experience for new referees.

The season started with a referee component included in the Summer Camp Programme for all participants. This was followed by a couple of training sessions for both our junior and senior referees. The miniball and intermediate referees covered the basic rules as well as some practical application of these rules. The senior referees covered the rules, rule changes and points of emphasis along with some video clips followed by a question and answer type discussion to help with their interpretations of the rules. All sessions were led by James Campion, the Regional Referees Officer.

A good number of our Junior Referees from 2009 continued to do so in 2010. They were joined by 10 new referees who refereed in either the Nelson or Richmond Miniball Competitions. All new referees started out refereeing alongside a more experienced one and with a high percentage of full court games they soon grew in confidence and skill.

The Intermediate Competition had a good mix of the old and new to cover all games each week. With the regularity of games and the opportunity to referee with some of our more experienced referees the development of these referees was evident.

There were also a good number of experienced senior referees available to control the A & B grade competitions and help out at the College Leagues. Once again all these competitions were played at Saxton Stadium which certainly assisted in the appointment of referees and the ability to put the experienced referees alongside those less experienced. This was particularly useful in the college competition where players became more willing to give it a go and help out. Hopefully this will encourage more players to join the realm of refereeing and the benefits it brings to their game.

The Zero Tolerance Policy, after a year of implementation, was effective in all competitions with players showing an improved attitude towards referees. A few players who received a technical foul during the season were sent a copy of the policy to remind them that their behaviour was unacceptable.

Our junior referees had plenty of opportunities to develop their skills at a number of tournaments held in Nelson throughout the year. There was a miniball tournament, U13 Regionals, 3 on 3 Tournament and the Miniball Exchange.

Our senior referees also had the opportunity to develop their game with four BBNZ Tournaments hosted in Nelson. James Campion was Technical Commissioner for all of these tournaments with Brendan Hodgson and Sam Bigwood refereeing at several National Tournaments. Jamie Hoult was rewarded for all his efforts by being invited to the A Secondary School Nationals and the U15 Nationals. He has also been awarded the Fred Harding Memorial Trophy for the Most Promising Junior Referee. Kat Manaena who joined our referees group this year from Southland has been awarded the Donald Bennett Memorial Trophy for Most Co-operative Referee. JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT

The Junior Development coaching sessions run alongside the Giants in Schools programme which provides individuals the opportunity to develop their skills with players of a similar age. The sessions are skill based and range from the elite training session to those with a fun element so all players, whatever their ability enjoy the basketball experience. Our programmes run throughout the year and cater for 3 – 18 year olds to help them achieve representative status or just to improve as an individual.

It all started with Summer Camp held 22 – 24 January for 12 – 18 year olds. High quality coaches led this programme for local and visiting representative players and provided them with both individual and team skills to carry over to their respective competitions. This year the camp was led by Joszef Molnar and he worked alongside Mike Fitchett, Terry Brunel and . Once again a referee component was part of the camp to help give players a better understanding of the game and referees calls.

Term 1 provided the opportunity for Years 5 – 8 to develop their skills and confidence to participate in the 2010 season. Seventeen Year 5 & 6 players benefited from the coaching of Jelena Vucinic, Brad McLaughlan and Dallas Ward while thirty four Year 7 & 8 players took this coaching on board with the same coaches and the addition of Chris Varcoe. It was great to see so many intermediate players keen to improve their skills.

Kindy Ball started in Term 1 and continued throughout the year with a small group of 3 & 4 year olds attending the 40 minute session once a week on Thursday afternoon. The core of the group was from the Stoke Montessori and they were joined by other individuals from various kindergartens in the Stoke area. The development of these youngsters is always quite amazing and should provide a sound base for our future basketballers.

Small Ferns and Little Giants for Years 1 – 4 ran throughout the year with about 20 in each of the Year 1 & 2 and Year 3 & 4 groups. The sessions were taken by Dallas and Jelena in Term 1 and then by Jelena and Ben Wright with Alistair Granger taking over from Jelena when she left for her scholarship in the USA. The programme continued In Term 4 with Dallas and Alistair coaching. These sessions were well received by all the children attending which was evident by the smiling faces at the end of each session and the number of those who kept coming back each term. It was great to see a gradual increase in the number of girls attending throughout the year.

The School Holiday Coaching sessions held 12 – 14 April were targeted at the Year 5 – 8 players once again as that seemed to be the age group who were keen to concentrate on their basketball skills and game. Jelena Vucinic, Bronson Beri and Nico Ritschney led these 1 ½ hour sessions over the 3 days.

An U12 Skills Day was held on Sunday 13 June from 9am – 2pm and led by Michael Fitchett and Josh Bloxham. This day was open to children U12 who were available for selection to attend the Great River Murray Jamboree in Albury, Australia in November. 35 players from our Nelson and Richmond Miniball competitions attended the day where 3 boys and 2 girls were selected: Ben Ripley, Harry MacDonald, Lachie McNae, Brittany Pellowe and Kimberley Neiman. JUNIOR COMPETITIONS The Junior Basketball Competitions were held at Saxton Stadium for the first time except miniball which was kept at Jack Robins, Stoke and the Badminton Hall, Richmond. It was great having all the teams playing at the same venue this year as it was easier to appoint referees and supervise the games. In both the Intermediate and College Competitions people could be found to cover any default duties that occurred. The atmosphere was electric with the 4 or 5 courts running at the same time.

Miniball was once again played on Friday night at Jack Robins Stadium, Stoke (17 teams) and the Badminton Hall, Richmond (19 teams) for 15 weeks throughout Terms 2 & 3. With numbers slightly down on last year it enabled the Year 6 and most of the Year 5 players the opportunity to play full court games. The development teams were the only ones who played on the half court. As the miniball competition was affected by the Giants having a number of Friday night games and NBA hosting tournaments most of the schools from both competitions played a couple of games on Sunday 20 June at Saxton Stadium. This enabled the Nelson and Richmond teams to play against other teams of similar strength and all at the same venue. This was a very successful day, which showed the benefit of playing there in the future. This season was the first time that semis and finals were introduced to the miniball competition as the number of weeks allocated provided the opportunity for the teams to finish with some close games to conclude the season. The finals in all 3 divisions both in Nelson and Richmond created an exciting finish to the season. A Boys and a Girls team were selected from both the Nelson and Richmond competitions to participate in the two miniball exchanges held in Nelson and Blenheim in August. The Intermediate Competition was played at Saxton Stadium on Monday night for the first time and retained similar numbers with 20 boys and 9 girls’ teams. 4 courts were used with games starting at 4pm and finishing at 8.45pm. The boys’ competition was split into 3 divisions and the girls into 2 divisions. Finals night provided a great night of basketball with all finals being very close encounters. With a growing number of junior referees available all games were covered and they were able to develop their ability with regular games to officiate. The College Competitions held on Wednesday night at Saxton Stadium was the busiest night using the 5 courts at Saxton Stadium and one game at Jack Robins. The U17+ Competition consisted of 18 teams including 2 girls teams and was split into 10 teams in Division 1 and 8 in Division 2. Both these divisions had evenly matched teams and provided many exciting nights of basketball games. However with a limited number of weeks available after the round robin matches the 18 teams were split into 3 divisions playing a round robin then semis and finals. The U15 Competition was made up of 14 teams of which 3 were girls. It was split into 2 divisions with the girls playing in division 1. They played 2 round robins after 3 weeks of grading games then finished with Finals and playoff games. The College Girls Competition had 8 teams, mostly juniors, which played a round robin before splitting into the top 4 and bottom 4. Their season finished with the finals and playoff matches for each group. It was a lot easier this year to find referees for all the games as there were senior referees around who could team up with juniors and team referees could be allocated games to suit their ability. Many thanks also go to those who stayed around to help with the taking down of the hoops. The Senior Secondary School Boys’ had a six team competition including Marlborough Boy’s High School running over 10 weeks run at Nelson College on Friday night. It was a rather disrupted season with a lot of Giants home games, holidays and tournaments on Friday night. The competition still provided some close matches to help the teams prepare for the Secondary School Premierships. It is difficult finding referees to cover these games on a Friday night and with all the interruptions it maybe better run on a home and away basis and organized by the schools in the future.

This was the first year that all our competitions have been played on the same night. It was great having everyone at the same venue as it allowed players to support other teams and the ability to appoint referees to games of their level. 2010 saw the acknowledgement of the Canterbury Community Trust and the New Zealand Community Trust by way of naming rights to courts 1 & 2.

The Turf Hotel Men's A Grade once again consisted of 6 teams which played 3 rounds and then the final and playoff games to end the season. The second and third round games provided a close competition between all 6 teams once their playing rosters were sorted. Waimea Knightriders took out both the Club Championship and Grand Final titles. Knightriders played Stoke Nayland Old Boys in the final winning 78 - 68.

Women's A Grade made up of 5 teams, battled it out throughout the season playing 3 rounds then semis and finals. The semi finalists weren’t decided until the final round of regular competition games with Stoke Nayland Old School taking the Club Championship. Stoke Nayland Old School also played Waimea College in the final as they did in 2009 but they managed to take the Grand Final title with a little more ease this year winning the match 78 - 42.

Men's B Grade consisted of 8 teams, 5 less than last season however it was a closer competition and not riddled with default games. They played a round robin to decide the B Grade Championship which was won by ZM Rebels. The 8 teams were then split into 2 divisions to finish the season. ZM Rebels took the A Reserve title and Turf Old Boys the Men’s C Grade.

Women’s B Grade as in the A grade only had 5 teams of varied ability which wasn’t ideal as some of the games weren’t that challenging and also didn’t provide suitable competition to play a bye match with the Women’s A Grade teams. Stoke Nayland Prices took out both the Club Championship and Grand Final titles. Prices played John Maxwell Electrical in the final winning the match 56 – 32. Although they won comfortably it showed that the strength was too great between the 2 women’s grades to start with them all teams together. Summer League, played at Jack Robins Stadium, continues to be well supported in the off season during the months of February to April and then again October to December. This is a popular competition for keen basketballers to keep their skills up to speed over these months or just to play in a fun, social competition because they like the game. The pre Christmas Competition has 10 teams on Monday and 6 on Wednesday. Fulton Hogan League The League continues to grow with 16 teams enjoying competition this season. In the B Grade the Salisbury School Hot Peppers won the competition against the previously unbeaten Broadgreen Superstars. The A grade competition came down to a one point difference with the Stormers eventually taking the title from Black Magic, winners for the previous two years. Thanks to the volunteers, the Nelson Basketball Association, the wider basketball community, and Fulton Hogan for their great support throughout a fifth successful season. Nelson hosted nine tournaments in 2010 ranging from a local 3 on 3 miniball tournament to the U21 National Championships. A number of Regional Tournaments were also held in Marlborough and Buller to provide many opportunities for our Age Group Rep Teams and Development Teams. We have a tremendous group of volunteers who help out with supervising and score bench duties which helps greatly with the hosting of well run tournaments in Nelson.

The season tipped off on 20 & 21 March with a small Open/Masters Tournament which consisted of 4 men’s teams only. A bit disappointing as there was a lot of interest when the entries went out. The teams enjoyed some close games and although rather social the competitive edge still showed whenever the scores got close.

The first of the BBNZ Tournaments was the U19 Premierships held on 23 – 25 April at Jack Robins and Nelson College on the Friday and then at the Trafalgar Centre on Saturday and Sunday. There were 8 men’s and 8 women’s teams participating with both our Nelson teams finishing 2nd.

This was closely followed by the U21 Nationals held 6 – 9 May at Saxton Stadium on Thursday and Friday and then the Trafalgar Centre on Saturday and Sunday. This was the first tournament to be held at Saxton Stadium and everything ran extremely well except for a few issues with sunlight on the court and a clock malfunction. It was unfortunate we had to move venues as seating for supporters was an issue and the unavailability on Saturday for netball. 15 men and 8 women’s teams attended the tournament with Nelson Men 3rd and Nelson Women 5th.

After a full on start with the previous two tournaments it was a time for the smaller but no less important U13 Regional Tournament on 26 & 27 May held at Jack Robins and Saxton Stadium. This provided an excellent opportunity for these teams to play in a tournament before heading off to the Premierships. Nelson entered both the boys and girls’ rep teams and development teams to face up against teams from Marlborough, West Coast and Buller. 5 boys and 6 girls’ teams took part with both the Nelson A teams winning the tournament. The Nelson Boys had a very close final against Marlborough just clinching the win in the last minute of the game whereas the girls had a comfortable win over Marlborough Red.

A 3 on 3 Tournament was held on 13 & 14 July for Years 5 & 6 and Years 7 & 8 for some holiday entertainment and the chance to work on their game skills. Year 5 & 6 played on the miniball court while Year 7 & 8 played half court. The improvement in team play over the 2 days certainly shows it’s a worthwhile tournament. Year 7 & 8 winners Waimea Bulls was made up of U15 rep players so tough competition to beat. The four Year 6 teams had a more even competition with the Tall Blacks and Tall Bratz finishing with a draw in the final. The four year 5 teams had the closest competition with only 1 or 2 points separating the teams over the 2 days. Hampden St Hotshots finally managed to take the title in the Final. The Miniball Exchange with Marlborough was held in Nelson on Sunday 1 August at Jack Robins with 6 boys’ teams and 4 girls. The Nelson A Teams in both the boys and girls competition were a lot stronger than others being comfortable winners on the day. They traveled to Blenheim on Sunday 15 August and although the other teams had made some adjustments they once again came out winners.

A couple of secondary school tournaments ended the season with Nelson hosting the Zone 4, Junior Secondary School Premierships 28 – 30 August at Saxton Stadium first up and this was followed by the Zone 4, A & AA Secondary School Girls . 15 Junior Boys and 10 Junior Girl’s teams played their games at Saxton Stadium on the 5 courts available. This created a great atmosphere with all the courts running and some exciting games taking place. With Nayland, Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls and Waimea taking part there was plenty of support around to help add to this. In the boys competition Nayland finished 3rd, Nelson College 4th and Waimea 8th while the girls were more successful with Waimea 1st, Nelson College for Girls 2nd and Nayland 10th. Once again the help from our volunteers was invaluable in the success of the tournament.

Things were a little quieter with the Zone 4, A & AA Secondary School Girls Premierships on the following days 31 August – 3 September but no less exciting with some real talent on display. 10 teams took part in the AA competition while there were only 3 in the A competition. Waimea College finished 2nd losing to Marlborough in the final with Nelson College for Girls 8th.
