Duchamp and the Fountain:November/Dec galley 4/9/15 16:59 Page 2 2 A CONCEPTUAL INCONVENIENCE Former museum director Julian Spalding and academic Glyn Thompson published an important article in The Art Newspaper in November 2014 (available online at the paper’s website and also in a longer version on the Scottish Review of Books website) proposing that the object we know as Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain , the urinal, was in fact the work of someone else: dadaist artist and poet Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven. The original Fountain was famously lost. In 1999 the Tate bought a 1964 copy for $500,000: it is one of 16 replicas made between 1951 and 1964. In 2004 ‘art experts’ declared Fountain the most influential work of art of the 20th century. Spalding and Thompson have asked for Fountain to be reattributed to its true author. What follows is a correspondence between the authors and Sir Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate Gallery. An exhibition, ‘A Lady’s not a Gent’s’, about the history of Fountain will take place at Summerhall, 1 Summerhall, during the Edinburgh Festival from August 5th to October 5th. www.summerhall.co.uk Duchamp and the Fountain:November/Dec galley 4/9/15 16:59 Page 3 3 November 10th, 2014 consultation must be in the public domain. • International Contemporary Art Biennial of South America
International Contemporary Art Biennial of South America BIENALSUR JUNE TO NOVEMBER 2019 BIENALSUR, other dynamics for art and culture Back in 2015, the interdisciplinary work we were carrying out from the perspective of international relations and art studies within the academic framework of the Universidad Tres de Febrero - a public Argentine university - prompted us to consider the challenge of reviewing the ways in which the dynamics of the art world can be impacted by other areas. So we began to look at the rules of the game governing the art system, and in the course of our investigation essayed new structures, capable of breaking down traditional formats to give birth to other dynamics. This is how BIENALSUR was born, a project wrought from the exchanges conflating horizontality and equality in the relations between the different actors and institutions from the artis- tic-cultural scene. A project reflecting a deep-seated vocation to collaborate and a genuine respect for diversity. In a world that today builds walls, BIENALSUR strives to erase borders as it places value on people’s differences, arising from the conviction that a cultural dimension is vital to contemplating the possibilities of dialogue between different sociopolitical universes. The project is also driven by the certainty that taking a broad approach to culture - in terms of encouraging access to instruments of thought - can be a new tool for those suffering the inequalities inherent to society today. The experience of cultural democra- tization which the MUNTREF has been working on since 2002 Passport 2019 p. 5 supports the objectives which BIENALSUR is seeking to expand and deepen.

  • The Wrong Idea
One CATTELAN AT THE WHITNEY BIENNIAL 2004: Nothing To Work With Cattelan is part clown, part sage—a cunning instigator clothed as comic idiot savant. I don’t trust him. Nobody should, as fostering mistrust of authorial authenticity, and of art systems in general, is part of his restless and willful conceptual project. -Jenny Liu “Trouble in Paradise” Trust me, I’m lying. – Maurizio Cattelan Blown Away I visited the Whitney Biennial a couple of months after it opened and the place was still packed. It was Friday, and the line wrapped around the block. It moved fast though; it seemed they weren’t refusing anyone, filling the museum to capacity. I followed the customary method of “doing” the biennial taking the elevator to the 1 2 The Wrong Idea fourth floor, and spiraling my way down through the galleries and stairs. I had examined two whole floors of art before encountering Maurizio Cattelan’s hijinx. After trudging through the above floors and viewing hundreds of pieces of art (or perhaps because of having done so). My curiosity was piqued when I saw the wall label for Cattelan’s work. He has developed a reputation for playing the provocateur, as a meta-art star. Among the international set of artists who have made their careers in the biennial circuit, Cattelan provides a much-needed comic relief. The label on the wall bore the following inscription: Maurizio Cattelan "Kitakyushu 2000 – New York 2004,” 2004 Body, clothes, table, chair. life-size Gift of the artist; courtesy of Marian Goodman Gallery, New York and CCA, Japan.

  • Saâdane Afif « Affiches & Fontaines » 26 April — 7 June 2014
Saâdane Afif « Affiches & Fontaines » 26 April — 7 June 2014 Press Release Saâdane Afif’s work often takes the exhibition as a pretext and originator for production and embraces various formats, such as objects, performances and texts. The new solo show at Xavier Hufkens brings together two important series from his oeuvre: Affiches as a witness and narrator of his practice and the Fontaines, from his on-going project ‘The Fountain Archive’, as an expression of his collecting obsession. A complete survey of Afif’s posters as well as the largest selection of Fontaines is displayed for the very first time. Afif’s interest in recurrence, variation and poetry is also mirrored in the alliterating title that intertwines with his name: Saâdane Afif, Affiches & Fontaines. Affiches: 2005 – 2014 Limited-edition posters are an integral part of Afif’s practice. Produced on the occasion of an exhibition / performance, each design lists the title and date of the related project, as well as the names of any additional collaborators. Serving as both an announcement and an archival document, the posters form a visual record of the evolution of Afif’s work. The artist describes the posters as framework for capturing the fleeting moment of an exhibition, an event described by the artist as “not an end in itself but a stage in a longer process. It is from one exhibition to another that the work is constructed.”1 The posters connect the artist’s interest in the ‘remake’ with his examination of the aura surrounding originality and authorship, whilst also forming a link with the second series presented in the exhibition: Fontaines.
