True, the sharp contrast between the squalor of Sharpevilie and the gli­ tter of Vereeniging expressive of the deejv-rooted inequality between oppressive and exploitative apartheid rulers on the one hand, and the millions of their victims on the other, between black and white " throughout the country, still exists undisturbed. To oppressed but fighting people Sharpevilie calls to mind all the grisly atrocities perpetrated by these racist colonialists since they set foot - on our land; and reminds us of all our martyrs and heroes who have laid down their lives in the name of our just cause of liberation. Shaav peville sharpens our hatred for apartheid, this system which has brought only hunger, disease, broken families, ignorance, insecurity and death to our peoples in South Africa and Namibia and a constant threat to the peace-loving peoples' of Angola, Mozambique, Lesotho, Botswana, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Seychelles.     NEWCONTREE 135 THE BIRTH OF UMKHONTO WE SIZWE: OLD AND NEW SOURCES Vladimir Shubin (Institute for African Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences) The history of the South African liberation movement is still to be written. Academic books and articles published so far left too many of its pages blank or contain information which can't withstand a scrutiny. Among the bibliographies on the anti-apartheid struggle Peter Limb's "The ANC and the Black Workers in South Africa, 1912-1992" should be singled out as well as books by Thomas Karis and Gail Gerhart. However, no special bibliography on "Umkhonto we Sizwe" (MK) has been compiled so far except for an introductory bibliography prepared by Sandi Ie Schalk and the author for the Conference on the Beginnings of the Armed Struggle in South Africa convened in December 1995 by the Mayibuye Centre for History and Culture at the University of the Western Cape. Who took a decision and when? The early history of MK is a subject to controversy. The question of when and how the decision was taken is a subject of debate among academics. Naturally nobody knew this better that the participants themselves but even the evidence of those who participated in the events directly is somewhat contradictory. The possibility of using an armed form of struggle was discussed in Congress Alliance and communist circles immediately after the Sharpeville massacre in March 1960 if not before. The mood was growing that under repressive conditions a position of non- violence was becoming more and more irrelevant. Some people even called it treacherous.

    Safrica Page 1 of 42 Recent Reports Support HRW About HRW Site Map May 1995 Vol. 7, No.3 SOUTH AFRICA THREATS TO A NEW DEMOCRACY Continuing Violence in KwaZulu-Natal INTRODUCTION For the last decade South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal region has been troubled by political violence. This conflict escalated during the four years of negotiations for a transition to democratic rule, and reached the status of a virtual civil war in the last months before the national elections of April 1994, significantly disrupting the election process. Although the first year of democratic government in South Africa has led to a decrease in the monthly death toll, the figures remain high enough to threaten the process of national reconstruction. In particular, violence may prevent the establishment of democratic local government structures in KwaZulu-Natal following further elections scheduled to be held on November 1, 1995. The basis of this violence remains the conflict between the African National Congress (ANC), now the leading party in the Government of National Unity, and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), the majority party within the new region of KwaZulu-Natal that replaced the former white province of Natal and the black homeland of KwaZulu. Although the IFP abandoned a boycott of the negotiations process and election campaign in order to participate in the April 1994 poll, following last minute concessions to its position, neither this decision nor the election itself finally resolved the points at issue. While the ANC has argued during the year since the election that the final constitutional arrangements for South Africa should include a relatively centralized government and the introduction of elected government structures at all levels, the IFP has maintained instead that South Africa's regions should form a federal system, and that the colonial tribal government structures should remain in place in the former homelands.

    Nelson Mandela’s “Show Trials”: An Analysis of Press Coverage of Mandela’s Court Appearances Martha Evans, Centre for Film and Media Studies UCT Abstract The figure of Nelson Mandela looms large in twentieth-century history. Beloved by celebrities around the globe, critics have noted his unique charisma – referred to as “Madiba magic”– and his ability to enchant audiences. Despite this, there have been few analyses of his construction as a celebrity politician, most likely because of celebrity’s association with frivolity and lack of substance – which sits poorly with our sense of Mandela. There have been particularly few examinations of his portrayal prior to imprisonment, when the seeds of the Mandela myth were sowed. This paper examines some of the early press coverage, focusing on Mandela’s “performances” in court. The paper argues that Mandela, helped by others, had a canny ability to pre- empt reactions to his appearance, and worked hard to direct his own image for political purposes. In addition, while Winnie Mandela’s role in raising awareness of her husband’s fate is well known, the paper shows how, even at this early stage, Mandela’s prominence and machismo depended on her feminine visibility. Mandela’s famed speech from the dock also founded a new moral tradition of protest and set the stage for his resurrection as the symbol of the Anti-Apartheid Movement.     Mar. 2006, Volume 3, No.3 (Serial No.16) US-China Education Review, ISSN1548-6613,USA Bridging the Digital Divide and the Use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in South African Universities: a Comparison Study among Selected Historically Black Universities (HBUs) and Historically White Universities (HWUs) Osunkunle, Oluyinka Oludolapo* University of Limpopo, South Africa Abstract: It has become common place for students in historically white universities (HWUs) in South Africa to have 24 hour access to computers, the Internet, e-learning facilities, check results online and even register online. However, historically black universities (HBUs) are still battling to have access to these facilities. On a macro level, the issue of lack of access to basic ICT facilities or digital divide exists. This is evident in the fact that developed nations like U.S.A and Switzerland have significant access to ICT, while under-developed nations in Africa like Ethiopia and Congo do not enjoy considerable access. On a micro level in South Africa, digital divide still exists. Even the divide exists among South African Universities as students in historically white institutions like Pretoria, Rhodes and Stellenbosch Universities enjoy unlimited access to ICT facilities like computers and the Internet. However, the reverse is the case in HBUs where access rate is very limited and personal observation bears this out as most historically black institutions like the University of Fort Hare, University of Limpopo, and University of Zululand, just to mention a few are still battling with the issue of access to ICT facilities. This paper presents the findings of a survey conducted to examine the present ICT status / capacity of HBUs compared to what exists in HWUs in South Africa.

Although not to the same extent as in medical experimentation, for example, the social sciences do entail addressing ethical considerations. Janzen Date approved: May 17, 2017 ii Abstract South Africa’s heralded democratic transition digressed from its 1994 euphoric optimism to a current state of public discontent. This stems from rising unemployment, persistent structural inequality, and a disappointment in the African National Congress-led government’s inability to bring true social and economic transformation to fruition. While some scholars attribute this socioeconomic and political predicament to the country’s former regimes, others draw close correlations between the country’s post-apartheid predicament, ANC leadership, and the country’s official adoption of neoliberal economic policies in 1996. Central to this post-euphoric moment is the country’s Born-Free generation, particularly Black youth, coming of political age in an era of supposed political freedom, social equality, and economic opportunities. But recent student movements evidence young people’s disillusionment with the country’s democratic transition. Such disillusionment is not unfounded, considering the 35% youth unemployment rate and questionable standards in primary education.
