REVEREND MICHAEL M. BOLAND Archdiocese of November 29, 2012

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Since the days of the First World War, hungry, homeless and struggling women, children and men of all faiths have come to the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago for help and hope. Whether in need of a warm meal, a safe place to stay for the night or help finding a job, Catholic Charities has served all who have turned to it for aid, regardless of religious background, race or nationality. Created in 1917 by Cardinal at the urging of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Catholic Charities began “with a view of coordinating and establishing closer relations between all the Catholic charitable agencies in the Archdiocese.” For almost one century, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago has remained steadfast in its unifying mission of charity to our neighbors in need through every era of peace, war, social change and economic and political , O.M.I. FRANCIS CARDINAL GEORGE upheaval. Today, Catholic Charities is an accredited social-service agency of Chicago serving more than one million people each year through 157 services at 162 locations. One in every three Chicagoans receives aid in some way from Catholic Charities, a tribute to the generosity of many thousands of donors and benefactors. While much has changed in the world since 1917, universal human needs remain constant: the poor among us reach out for help with job training, 2012 daycare for their children and family counseling; our veterans to us ANNUAL for clean and safe housing and the affirmation they deserve for serving our REPORT country; refugees from war-torn areas rely on us for resettlement assistance and restoration of their human dignity; and seniors approach us for home- 5 delivered meals and opportunities for companionship and social interaction. The list could go on and on. I am deeply grateful to the thousands of Catholic Charities donors and volunteers who share their skills and financial resources to meet the needs of our neighbors. Your prayers, volunteer work and financial support are deeply appreciated. As well, I offer my sincere thanks to Monsignor Michael M. Boland, President of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago, for his faithful leadership and exemplary professionalism, and to his dedicated Board of Advisors and competent and caring staff. Catholic Charities cannot run on good will alone; the work is often complicated and more often unappreciated. But in the end, it is the kind of work that really matters, as it has the power to change lives forever. Please keep Catholic Charities and all the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago in your prayers, especially at this time. You are in my prayers. Please keep me in yours. May God bless you and your families.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

NOW MORE THAN EVER November 29, 2012

Dear Friends of Catholic Charities,

Why is Catholic Charities needed now, more than ever? I answer that question every time…I look out my window at 721 N. LaSalle Street and see the long line of hungry and homeless people entering our building five days a week for a hot meal…when I hold the hand of a senior in the last stages of life at our nursing home, Holy Family Villa...when I listen to veterans describe how our St. Leo Residence helped them out of homelessness into stability….when I see relief in the eyes of a parent who knows her child is receiving quality child care at one our neighborhood centers…when I hear families who have lost members to suicide speak about the comfort they received from our LOSS counseling program…when I read a report listing the thousands of meals our Summer Food program provides to REVEREND MONSIGNOR children who would otherwise go hungry. MICHAEL M. BOLAND After 95 years, people are still in dire need all around us. It is striking to read Administrator this excerpt from the minutes of our first Board meeting in 1917: “Wishing President and CEO to lend every assistance practicable to the Most Reverend Archbishop in Catholic Charities his heroic efforts to alleviate the suffering and ameliorate the condition of Archdiocese of Chicago the widows and orphans, the feeble and infirm, the weak and faltering, the abandoned and cast-off….” Many of those words ring true today, and describe conditions in every corner of the metropolitan area that we serve. 2012 As Catholics, we live a faith that embraces a world in need. Jesus said the ANNUAL REPORT poor will always be with us, whether in material or spiritual ways. Our goal at Catholic Charities is to always be here for the poor. Our Catholic identity compels us to help anyone in need, regardless of their faith, and despite 6 cultural conventions and political agendas which come and go. From a humble beginning 95 years ago with a handful of staff, we now have over 2,700 employees, five service divisions, and six regional offices. We have more than 17,000 volunteers, including our Board of Advisors, which numbers over 600 members. Catholic Charities is not just an agency in Chicago; it is an immense community of caring that has impacted countless individuals and generations of families; both those who were helped and those helping. Thankfully, while Catholic Charities is needed more than ever, we are also stronger than ever. In FY2012 we not only maintained 157 programs across Cook and Lake counties, we grew: breaking ground for new senior apartments and for an addition at Holy Family Villa; partnering with a local parish to create our tenth child development center; retooling our Holbrook Counseling Center to reach more people with skilled and affordable mental health counseling; creating more jobs for youth and adults; and creating a nutrition training program for home care aides working with seniors. “I will be with you always…” Jesus told his disciples. With your help, Catholic Charities will always be with The Archdiocese of Chicago. God bless you as we enter a new year filled with faith and gratitude for the chance to serve our neighbors in need.

Sincerely, November 29, 2012

Dear Friends of Catholic Charities,

Ninety-five years is a big milestone in the life of any organization, especially a nonprofit in these times of economic strife. Demand for social services is high, and both public and private funding are harder to obtain. Because generations of leaders provided good stewardship, Catholic Charities has weathered social and economic storms as an anchor for Chicago’s poor. Now more than ever, our Board has a key role to play in continuing the Church’s mission of charity to anyone in need, regardless of their faith. From a group of 249 concerned Catholic men who gathered in 1917 to consolidate charitable activities in the Achdiocese of Chicago, our Board of Advisors now numbers over 600 and more closely mirrors JOE LUBY the people we serve, including women, minorities, and non-Catholics. Chairman Board of Directors Our board also reflects the complexity of the services Catholic Catholic Charities Charities provides across Cook and Lake Counties. We have 25 Archdiocese of Chicago separate subcommittees that span the “ABCs” of agency operation: from Audit to Volunteers. Each of our six regional offices has an advisory committee, as well as each of our service areas: Family and Parish Support, Community Development and Outreach, Child, Youth and Family Services, Housing Services and Senior Services. 2012 Along with serving on standing committees, our members ANNUAL REPORT support Catholic Charities by chairing events, seeking , and serving as everyday “ambassadors” for the good work accomplished by the agency’s dedicated staff and volunteers. 7 I am honored to have served as Board Chair for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago, working in partnership with like-minded persons of all faiths. Together, we are committed to promoting the Church’s mission of charity far into the future.

Sincerely,

Catholic Charities Board of Advisors

BOARD OF ADVISORS

Over 600 strong, the Catholic Charities Board of Advisors consists of talented and dedicated individuals from a very broad range of backgrounds, experiences and professions. Many members serve on one or more of the Board’s 27 Standing Committees. Through this service, our members assist, advise and support Catholic Charities in a multitude of areas, including: fundraising, investment management, finance, strategic planning, real estate, legal, veteran’s affairs and communications. Board of Advisors members also provide advice and support to the many programs of Catholic Charities including working on one of five regional advisory boards to assist the efforts of regional offices and staff in Waukegan (Lake County), Cicero, Worth, Des Plaines and South Holland (Cook County). 2012 ANNUAL In addition to serving on board committees, members REPORT of the Board of Directors and Board of Advisors also regularly volunteer in our programs. In FY2012 New Board Candidates sworn in by Cardinal , O.M.I. 28 the Board of Advisors clocked an impressive 2,704 volunteer hours, providing pro bono legal assistance to our veterans, serving dinners to the hungry and organizing and working in a new project called Mary’s Closet by collecting men’s and women’s gently-used professional clothing, and providing career coaching to individuals seeking employment. These and other volunteer efforts have increased in recent years, allowing Catholic Charities to do more with less resources for those in need in challenging economic times.

JUNIOR BOARD

Our Junior Board celebrated its 10th anniversary in FY2012 and continues to grow and thrive. The Junior Board consists of over 300 young adults committed to promoting the compassionate works of Catholic Charities and becoming leaders in the Church through effective community action, including volunteer service, social fundraising, and theological exploration. In FY2012, The Junior Board raised $52,000 dollars to assist our Emergency Assistance Programs and provided an impressive 7,255 hours of service. Junior Board members make a difference with their energy and enthusiasm. VOLUNTEERS
