DEBRA Golf Society St George’s Hill - 12 May 2021 Welcome It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all today to our second DEBRA Golf Society event of 2021. To say it’s been a strange and difficult year is quite an understatement. I am indebted to all of you for supporting us through these tough times and proud of our community coming together throughout the year to make golf days and fundraising for DEBRA possible, even if we did have some unusual conditions to cope with. Because of your support and generosity, we still managed to raise over £120,000 from our golf events whilst most other activities were either severely curtailed or cancelled altogether. I thank you all. Unfortunately COVID continues to affect us all and, as a consequence, we once again had to delay the start of our season and endure limitations on our activities. Hopefully this year the vaccination program will allow us to regain more normality by the month and by Summer’s end we might be running a full day’s schedule without restrictions- here’s hoping. Our events calendar this year is still impressive. Once again, thanks to you, we are pretty well booked throughout the year. Many fundraising activities are suspended for the time being so we need to look at more ways to raise money - the charity has lost over £2.5 million these last 12 months but we are determined to claw it back. I am particularly grateful to this year’s Captain Simon Pollard for continuing the initiative set up by Jon Isaacs last year in launching a golf giving page - we raised over £15,000 last year and I’m sure with your help can do so again at www. justgiving.com/fundraising/simon-pollard-debra I would also like to thank Steve Rider who has taken over as President of the Golf Society from the much missed Peter Alliss. Throughout the year we will keep you up to date with our activities and progress and maybe a few surprise dates! I wish you all the very best for your families and friends and hope that we can brighten up a few days with some great golf courses and for some of you a sparkling game to match. Please keep supporting DEBRA, help us fight EB, and enjoy your golf. What is EB? • Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a group of painful genetic skin conditions that cause the skin to tear and blister at the slightest touch. • People with EB have a faulty gene, meaning the skin cannot bind together, so any trauma or friction can cause painful blisters, open wounds and scarring. It can also affect internal linings and organs. • The name comes from ‘epiderm’ - the outer layer of skin, ‘lysis’ - the breakdown of cells and ‘bullosa’ - blisters. • There are many different types of EB, ranging from the mildest, in which only the big toes are affected, to the most severe, which can have a devastating effect on any part of the body, causing lifelong disability and pain, and in some cases can sadly be fatal.
