Cork 6. Pack of cards 10. Match box 14. This book 3. Magnet 7. Maltesers 11. Balloons (2) 15. Letters 4. Skittles 8. Craft Sticks (8) 12. Fill in some of the ideas in your bucket list above and then take a picture of it and send it to howdenscouts.co.uk/vcsubmit Fire Lighting and Smores You will need: • Small dry sticks • Some larger sticks • Something to light the fire with • Something to make a fire in (old frying pan or hole in the ground) • Water to put the fire out Watch - howdenscouts.co.uk/vcfire Make sure you have an adult with you and make piles of your sticks in size order. Make a fire base with your smallest sticks and then light them. As the fire takes carefully add the larger wood until your fire is the size you want it to be. You will need: • 2 Biscuits (chocolate digestives are the best) • Marshmallows • Toasting fork To make a smore, toast a marshmallow over a fire then squish it between 2 biscuits and enjoy. Mini Catapult Have fun fighting your family with these fun mini catapults. You will need: • 7 craft sticks • Markers or paint • 5 rubber bands • Ammo Here is how to make your secret weapon: Watch - howdenscouts.co.uk/vccatapult Colour the craft sticks with the paint or markers and allow to dry Stack 5 craft sticks together and use a rubber band to secure each end making sure it’s nice and tight Slide one craft stick above the bottom stick in the stack and pull through Put the last craft stick on top and put a rubber band on this and the stick you put through the bottom. To keep it steady use the last 2 rubber bands to create an X around the middle of the catapult leaving it a little loose so you can adjust it. You can attach part of an egg box for your ammo if you are feeling adventurous. Let us know what you found best for ammunition. Lego Camp Gadget At camp we often make camp gadgets out of sticks and rope. We want you to put your invention caps on and design and build a camp gadget out of Lego. Build your gadget and then tell us what it does. It doesn’t have to be realistic, but it should look cool. Submit pictures of your gadgets to howdenscouts.co.uk/vcsubmit Akela Mini Fig Akela would like a portrait of him as a mini-fig. The best one will get a prize. Cook an egg in an orange Cooking on camp we use lots of different pans but did you know you can use an orange to cook an egg? You will need: • Orange • Egg To cook your egg in an orange; • First cut the top off the orange and hollow it out like a pumpkin • Crack your egg into the orange • Put the top back on and cook either on the embers of a fire or in an oven at about 160 for 5 minutes. • Check the egg and once it is not runny enjoy You can also cook a cake in an orange just by replacing the egg with some cake mixture. Build a Den When we go camping, we sleep in hammocks or tents (sometimes we are in bunkbeds indoors too). These help you warm and dry and that is what a den does. Build yourself a den to spend the night it, it could be indoors or outside. Make sure you have somewhere to sleep and somewhere to play during the day. If you would like to show off your den submit pictures or videos to howdenscouts.co.uk/vcsubmit. Make a Compass A compass is a really useful device when you are out walking as it always points North. But did you know you can make one? You will need: • 1 needle (in your bag) • Piece of cork (in your bag) • Magnet (in your bag) • Bowl of water (George would let Akela put that in the bag) To make your compass Stroke the magnet along your needle from eye to point (only in one direction) 15 to 20 times Float your cork in your water and carefully place the needle on top The needle should point North, if it doesn’t then carefully take it back out and stroke the magnet along the needle again. Mug Cake You will need: • Teaspoon of butter • 1 egg • 2 tablespoons sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 tablespoon milk • 5 tablespoons plain flour • ½ teaspoon baking powder To make your cake Watch – howdenscouts.co.uk/vcmugcake • Melt the butter • Add the rest of the ingredients • Mix it all up • Microwave it for 1:40 Edible Slime We have all made normal slime but have your tried edible slime? Here how you can make a tasty treat you can play with! Parents this is going to get messy! You will need: • 1 can of sweetened & condensed milk • 3 tablespoons of chocolate syrup • Cornflour • Chocolate chips How to make it: Wash your hands Mix together the milk and 1/4 cup of cornflour and the syrup in a pan and cook on a medium heat, bring to the boil and until thickened stirring frequently Put some cornflour on a surface and pour the mixture on to the flour and allow it to cool for a few minutes Knead the chocolate slime for a few minutes in the cornflower, if you want it thicker add more cornflower Mix in the chocolate chips to add texture and variety if needed Keep in the fridge in a sealed container Please remember to take pictures and submit them to howdenscouts.co.uk/vcsubmit Tea Guardian If you came on the joint Cubs and Scouts Camp you will have learnt about tea guardians, if you didn’t or can’t remember then watch the video below. Watch – howdenscouts.co.uk/vctea We would like you to make your own tea guardian out of the clay in your bag. Once we get to go camping again, we are going to start our very own tea ceremonies (well hot chocolate ceremonies) so we need a guardian. If you would like to donate your guardian to the group for it to be used then keep hold of it until we can meet face-to-face again. Cook Your Own Tea We try to get you cooking at camps so why not keep your cooking skills fresh and work towards your chefs badge by cooking tea for your family. Plan, cook, serve and clear away a two-course meal for at least two people. You should prepare and cook vegetables as part of the menu. Remember, an adult must supervise you for this step. Talk to the people you’re cooking for about the menu. Bring in photos to show what you made. 1st Course nd 2 Course Silver Egg This experiment is really easy but effective You will need: • Egg • Candle • Glass of water How to do it: Hold your egg at either side using your thumb and pointer finger and hold over the candle until it turns black Keep turning the egg until the entire egg is black (it might get hot) Once your egg is completely black place this in the bowl of water and watch it turn silver What’s Happening? When you coat the egg in a layer of soot which is burnt carbon layers, the carbon is rough and leaves gaps between the carbon particles. When you put the sooty egg inside the bowl of water, the water doesn’t actually come in contact with the egg.

Frankly, I’ve got a font Jones and spend way too much time routing about the web looking for new fonts, not unlike how driftwood artists scour the shores looking for new bleached branches. Christoph Mueller designed MOM’S TYPEWRITER by scanning in the output of his mother’s old machine. One of its charms is that it has neither a zero nor a one.

This popularization led to the development of banjo traditions in both folk culture, white as well as black, and popular culture (in the parlor as well as in the theater).

02/16/13 It’s On FEBRUARY 15, Late afternoon. The crew opened the door to the sugarhouse. Slipped off their packs onto the cement floor, dropped spent batteries in the white pail. A: Come on in and get warm by the fire. B: Don’t need to, it was warm up on the hill. A: Did it run today? J: The tapholes were wet. First day they’ve been wet. It’s on. (Eyebrows flick up like a light switch: face turns on.) B: A couple holes filled up with sap, there was the occasional drip. A: Where were you tapping today? J: Up on Herbie. Sank up to my waist in snow every fifth step – or maybe every fifteenth step. Rest of the time, up to my knees. B: Thing is, on Morningside there was only two inches of mashed potato snow, then when we wrapped around the hill onto Herbie Road, we were into two feet of powder. A: If that was me, I’d be cursing that I didn’t have my snowshoes on. B: Oh yeah, we did plenty of that. J: Guttural grunts, mostly. The most manly growls we could concoct. GHUHHHHH. • History of Minstrelsy, Its Inner Workings and Business
Introduction - 1 1 Inside Look at Minstrelsy - 37 The Photos - 65 More Photos - 97 Songs - 117 History of Minstrelsy, Its inner workings and business. "Minstrelsy is an ancient art." This project is to explore the inner working of minstrelsy. During its heyday, from the 1840s to the end of World War I it was the major exponent of entertainment in America. Minstrelsy has been around for centuries -from King David, to the medieval troubadours and finally to the shores of America. In America it took place before, during and after the emancipation of the Negro slaves and spread across the continent both with professional white and Negro groups (both using black face) and with minstrel shows produced by churches, schools and social organizations. Etc. While professional minstrels became less popular, minstrels did last long into the 20th century. (Personnel note-My father played bones in a church minstrel in the late 1930s and my brother and I (playing accordions) played in the olio part of a church minstrel in the 1940s.) Few forms or styles of entertainment last over generations. There are revivals but these are just points in time. An 'art' has an influence on a society. Rap music can be seen as a present day reversal of the minstrels. Eventually the public had problems accepting the minstrel with its black faced individuals. Strangely the height of minstrel happened after the Civil War. As with any art form, minstrelsy evolved, dropping its first part and became a spectacular revue taking the Olio into vaudeville. Black face was a familiar theatrical device in Europe (Shakespeare's Othello) as black was not permitted to be onstage.
