On November 1, 1950, in his Apostolic Constitution “Munificentissimus Deus”, pope Pius XII defined the to be a dogma of faith: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The pope proclaimed this dogma only after a broad consultation of , theologians and laity from 1940 to 1950. What the pope solemnly declared was already a common belief in the . **** The month of August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The heart of the B.V. St. Lawrence was charged with the responsibility for the material goods of the church and the distribution of alms to the poor. During the persecution of the Emperor Valerian and four days after pope St. Sixtus II was put to death, St. Lawrence and four clerics suffered martyrdom. A great gridiron was prepared, with coals beneath it, and St. Lawrence’s body was placed on it. After the had suffered the pain for a long time, he made his famous cheerful remark, “It is well done. Turn me over!” The details of his death were known to St. Damasus, St. Prudentius, St. , and St. Augustine. The church built over his tomb became one of the seven principal churches in and a favorite place for Roman pilgrimages.

“The LORD is in his Holy Temple; let all the earth keep silence before Him.” (Hab. 2, 20) The Life of St. Philomena. On December 21, 1833, the Holy Office declared that there was nothing contrary to the Catholic faith in the revelations that Sister Maria Luisa di Gesù (1799–1875), a Dominican tertiary from , claimed to have received from the Saint herself. According to Sister Maria Luisa di Gesù, Saint Philomena told her she was the daughter of a king in who, with his wife, had converted to Christianity. At the age of about 13, she took a vow of consecrated virginity. When the Emperor threatened to make war on her father, her father went with his family to Rome to ask for peace. The Emperor "fell in love" with the young St. Philomena and, when she refused to be his wife, subjected her to a series of torments: scourging, from whose effects two angels cured her; drowning with an anchor attached to her (two angels cut the rope and raised her to the river bank); being shot with arrows, (on the first occasion her wounds were healed; on the second, the arrows turned aside; and on the third, they returned and killed six of the archers, after which, several of the others became Christians). Finally the Emper- or had her decapitated. The decapitation occurred on a Friday at 3:00 PM as with the death of Jesus. The anchor, three arrows, the palm and the ivy leaf on the tiles found in the tomb were interpreted as symbols of her martyrdom. In the Neapolitan 's account, Saint Philomena also revealed that her birthday was January 10, that her martyrdom occurred on August 10 (the date also of the arrival of her relics in Mugnano del Cardinale), and that her name "Filumena" meant "daughter of light. On January 13, 1837, in the aftermath of the cure of Venerable , Pope Gregory XVI authorized liturgical celebration of St. Philomena on August 11.
