All the best for 2014. News and reviews Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management Hill Climb: Le Val des Terres 815m. St Peter Port, Guernsey by R Elliott

Eight in a row for Stuart

Stuart Le Noury was the quickest walker up the Hill Climb for the eighth consecutive year. He walked the 815 metres in 4.43 to regain the Rob Waterman Shield for the fastest male walker. He was three seconds ahead of brother Jason Le Noury`s 4.46, whose effort was walked a few minutes later. Jason knocked nine seconds off his best time set back in 2008. Walkers are set off at one minute intervals to tackle the climb in a time trial event. Third fastest was Terry Bates in 5.39.

Karen Farman won the Women’s Shield with a winning time of 6.36, ahead of Jayne Le Noury 6.55 and Kay Coulson 7.18.

Alex Wright set to gain Irish Citizenship We read from the Irish Independent web site that Alex Wright is in the process of changing his international allegiance to Ireland. Scottish VH Christmas Race by J Law Once again, many thanks to Scottish Veteran Harriers Club for allowing Scottish Race Walkers to take part in another of their races. On Sunday 15 December 2013 we joined the runners for the SVHC Christmas Handicap. Despite some lingering winter illnesses, our merry band of five battled through the wind and rain to put in our best performances. Result of the day came from Ian Donaldson, who won the handicap prize by finishing 7 seconds under his nominated time. Congratulations Ian - the first ever race walker to win the handicap! After the race we all celebrated with a nice cup of hot soup, secret santa and a raffle.

BMAF news by Ian Richards In last month’s record I reported that a proposal was being made at the World Masters Athletics (WMA) congress in that might have a significant impact on the future of master’s race walking. In the event that proposal, which demanded that the WMA strictly enforce IAAF rules for all events unless a specific WMA rule was in place, was withdrawn and referred to a technical committee. We will have to wait a few more years before we see how race walking might be affected

Decisions were taken on venues for future championships with forthcoming European Championships also being confirmed. The City of Glasgow were intending to submit a bid for the 2016 European Indoor Championships (they would have been required to hold two walks, a 3km track and 5km road) but have now decided not to bid. A bid from for the 2018 European Non Stadia Championships to be held in the Olympic Park looks very likely. That would include a 10k road and a 30k road for men, 20k for women.

It is hoped that Great Britain will have a big presence for the World Championships both next year in Budapest and in Lyon in 2015 because of the ease of travel and reduced cost compared to the more recent championships

BMAF 20km Championship A very successful trial was held in conjunction with this year’s 20km championships which were held on the 30th November at the Hillingdon Cycleway. Within the 20km which incorporated both the BMAF championships and to Middlesex championships which were judged under A rules, an Enfield 10km league race took place under B rules. Different coloured numbers were used for those walking under A rules to those walking under B rules to help judges distinguish between those who needed to be judged solely on contact.

BMAF news cont’d There were 52 starters in all with 28 going the extra 10k for the 2 championships. Sadly there were only 4 walkers under the age of 35 in both races. This format worked well and could be a solution for the future in helping to ensure that longer distance races can remain economically viable. The results are shown later in this issue but there were some good battles taking place throughout the race although in the latter stages many got carded for bent knees as seems quite a regular occurrence in longer distance races. Cardiff Met Grand Prix, Sunday 15 December 2013 By S Dooley The Indoor centre at Cardiff Metropolitan University is an excellent venue for athletics, and the dazzling array of International class athletes that adorn the walls are testament to what good facilities and quality competition can deliver.

The women’s 3000m was arguably one of the finest domestic indoor races of all-time, with the first three finishers making the All-Time British top 10 rankings.

Bethan Davies led from the front, with Welsh team mate Heather Lewis in close attendance for the first kilometre. At 4:21, the possibility of a British indoor record was realistic, with Ellie Dooley just 6 seconds back, inside British junior record pace. Bethan began to pull away from Heather as the laps rapidly clicked past, and by 2k her pace had dropped slightly, but was still within site of Niobe Menendez’s 12 year old record.

Behind her Heather, Ellie, Jasmine Nicholls and Emma Achurch were all walking at paces exceeding their PBs, though Ellie’s chance of taking the junior record was now unlikely. Bethan stormed through the finish in 13:09.21 - just 0.57s outside the British record.

Heather finished strongly too. Her time of 13:28.72 slicing a second of Julie Drake’s British u/23 record set more than two years before Heather was born. Ellie crossed the line in 13:47.27. The third fastest time ever by a British junior and just 10.84 seconds of the record - and with another full year as a junior, the opportunity to lower her time still exists.

But the race wasn’t over, Jasmine had led Emma for 14 laps, but the younger athlete was gradually clawing her way back. And down the home straight they were both flat out. Under close scrutiny from the judge, both maintained excellent form, with Emma getting in front just on the line. Jasmine had sliced nearly 30 seconds off her PB, whilst the rapidly improving Emma had taken over a minute off hers.

The five had all shown great commitment to support this event and provided good entertainment for the appreciative spectators.

And the spectators were equally appreciative of the younger talent on display before this race in the 1000m event. Mostly coached by Martin Bell in Wales, the 5 lap race was led by Megan Stratton-Thomas from start to finish, though Amy Phipps pushed her hard over the early laps before Megan pulled away.

The Men’s 3000m had just the one entrant. Cameron Corbishley went under 13 minutes for the first time in 12:54.76. After just one event, British Athletics decision to promote a winter series of race walks, that includes indoor racing, already appears to have been well merited.

IAAF Pit lane rule Introduction • Following a proposal from the IAAF Race Walking Committee, the IAAF Council decided that, starting in 2014, all National Level Race Walk competitions for athletes under 16 be conducted, as much as possible, with some form of Pit Lane Rule with the principal aim of reducing (if not eliminating) disqualifications altogether. • A Working Group was appointed by the Race Walking Committee to develop an adequate framework for the practical implementation, which is detailed in these operational guidelines. • These guidelines are designed for a competition held on a track over the distance of 5000m or 10,000m (common for youth athletes) and conducted in accordance with IAAF Rule 230.2(e) – i.e. with six Race Walking Judges including the Chief Judge. • Should the competition be held on the road, in the interest of fairness conditions similar to those of a track event (number and position of judges, length of loop, position of pit lane, etc.) should apply. Penalty Area set up (for track events – see example attached) • It should be located in the final straight, in lanes 5 to 7, close to the 80m start line and in front of the Posting Board. • It shall have one entrance and one exit at opposite ends and the size of the area should be such to allow 5 athletes at the same time (about 10m2). • Small barriers or cones should be used to delimit the penalty area. • The athlete is free to stop or continue moving inside the penalty area however there shall be no benches and no access to refreshments, drinking, sponging or other kind of assistance. Set up for road events should be similar though compatible with existing space constraints. Additional Officials • There must be 2 red-card collectors next to each Race Walking Judge to ensure the fastest possible delivery of the red cards to the recorder • 1 official and 1 assistant will be required to be in charge of the Penalty Area operation (in charge of the athletes entry and exit, plus the control of the penalty time) • 1 Chief Judge’s Assistant will be required to help the Chief Judge communicate the penalty times to the athletes concerned, especially in the last laps.

Page 4 of 24 Contact us at [email protected] December Race Walking Record 2013 In association with the Race Walking Association

IAAF Pit lane rule cont’d Judging • IAAF Race Walking Rules (230) must be applied with the following differences: • When one athlete receives 3 Red Cards, he must receive a communication from the Chief Judge or his assistant showing him a paddle with the time penalty on both sides and he must stop in the penalty area at the first opportunity. Depending on the race distance, the following penalty times shall apply: • Races up to 5km 60 seconds • Races from 5km to 10km 120 seconds • After the time penalty, and following the instructions of the official in charge of the penalty area, the athlete shall re-enter the event. • The athlete is not judged in the Penalty Area.

If the athlete then receives any additional Red Card(s) (from the judges who had not previously sent him one), he shall be disqualified and the Chief Judge or his assistant must notify the disqualification as soon as possible. If an athlete receives 4 or more Red Cards before stopping in the penalty area, the athlete shall be disqualified and the Chief Judge or his assistant must notify the disqualification as soon as possible. If an athlete receives the third Red Card at the late stage of the race and it’s not possible for the Chief Judge or his assistant to notify the athlete that he must stop in the penalty area, the athlete shall finish the race and the penalty time (60 or 120 seconds) shall be added to his official time. The Chief Judge maintains the special power to immediately disqualify the athlete in the last 100m of a race (no time penalty) if he tries to gain an unfair advantage. Eric Horwill becomes President of RWA by D. Ainsworth Congratulations to still active octogenarian Eric Horwill (Dudley & Stourbridge Harriers) who became Centurion 390 when completing the 1966 Leicester-to-Skegness 100 Miles in 21.51.09, on his election as Race Waling Association President - taking over the chain of office from Mark Easton, winner of the last ever London-to-Brighton Walk. Eric, is in Centurions' history - for the longest interval between successful sub-24 hours' 100 miles completions. On Ware track in 1997 he was successful for a second time also earning selection for Roubaix!

George Mitchell by D. Ainsworth Centurion C450 George Mitchell reached his 99th birthday on Bonfire Night 2013, and it was hoped he'd pass 100 years, so emulating The Centurions' only known centenarian, founder member C12 Bill Brown. Sadly it wasn't to be as he passed away while a hospital patient on Sunday 8th December.

Midlander George qualified at the 1970 Leicester-to-Skegness clocking 21.10.57, finishing in step with fellow Birmingham Walking Club member C451 Albert Stokes who still officiates & coaches. This race spanned 2 months, starting on July 31st, ending August 1st and won by Midlander Karl Abolins C233.

George was a talented competitor at all distances and continued giving a good account of himself when reaching veteran status - often at the expense of rivals half his age! He was prominent in staging his Club's popular Birmingham Outer Circle classic and when increased traffic ended that event, it was replaced by a popular Open 35K around a long traffic-free circuit in Sutton Park. When I qualified in the 1974 Leicester-to-Skegness George attended with his Club colleague Dave Mace, who was unsuccessful.

When Dave retired George didn't go home...he stayed on the course right to Skegness offering assistance & encouragement to any without attendants. That was the measure of this man, always putting our sport first!

When Birmingham WC ceased he joined Birmingham & Royal Sutton Coldfield WC and later became a Birchfield Harrier. His health was such that he completed a race after his 90th birthday and he regularly corresponded with folk until the last year of his eventful, rich and full life. The Midlands have lost one of their most popular activists, a true gentleman and one blessed with a wonderful sense of humour. To his widow Rita, herself aged 95 years, and all other family members we express our condolence.

George Mitchell and Beryl Thorpe by B. Sutherland We were very sorry to hear of the passing of George Mitchell of Birmingham Walking Club at the ripe old age of 99. He was a marvellous character, who will always be remembered in the History of Famous Race Walks as organiser of the Birmingham Outer Circle at the unusual distance of 25 miles. Wherever he trod he left his mark in the most positive way. Most top Race Walkers are supported in their endeavours to the reach the top of the mountain by a marvellous wife and family, so we were sorry to hear of the passing too of Beryl wife of Roy Thorpe, Commonwealth Games Silver Medallist in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1974 She was always on the side of the road giving her support and will be sadly missed. May they Rest in Peace.

British Grand Prix of Race Walking to be staged in York on Sunday 8th June The British Grand Prix of Race Walking will be staged on the new cycle circuit at York Sport Village, University of York next year, it has been announced.

Designated by the European Athletics Association as a European Athletics Race Walking Permit Meeting, it will form part of a series of events held across the continent in Switzerland, Slovakia, Portugal, Czech Republic and Lithuania, Russia.

The meeting on Sunday, 8 June 2014 will be one of the last major warm-up events for the top European race walkers ahead of the European Athletics Championships in Zurich in August. Previous UK editions of this event have attracted numerous Olympic, World Championship and European Medallists. It is hoped that the event, which will feature a Men’s and Women’s 20km and a Junior Men’s and Women’s 10km event in the international programme, will attract competitors from more than 20 countries from across the world.

The highest international level competition to be staged in Yorkshire in 2014, it is another international sports event taking place in York in the build-up to the Grand Depart of the Tour de France.

Event Director Ian Richards said: “It is great that we can re-establish a European Race Walking Permit Meeting in the UK and build on the legacy of the 2007 European Cup in Leamington Spa and last year’s Olympic events that drew crowds of 50,000 to The Mall. We are also pleased that we can bring this competition to the fantastic new facilities here at York Sport Village.”

Andi Drake, Head Coach at the National Race Walking Centre in Leeds and an England Athletics Endurance Coach Mentor, said: “It is fantastic for the best British walkers to be able to race against top level international competition on home soil.”

Keith Morris, Head of Sport at the University of York, said: “We are delighted that York Sport Village has been chosen to host the British Grand Prix of Race Walking on the cycle circuit. We are very much looking forward to welcoming the athletes and working with the organisers to make this a successful and memorable event.”

Cllr Sonja Crisp, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “This is a very welcome announcement, proving the quality of the University’s council-backed cycle circuit and our local infrastructure to support major sports events. It also builds on our triumph with the Yorkshire , showing that success breeds success and attracts more events to benefit sports and the local economy.”

Yorkshire and York in particular has a long history of staging race walking events. The world’s first amateur race walking event was staged between Bradford’s George Hotel and the Windmill Hotel, York on Whit Monday (31 May) in 1903 over a distance of 39 miles. This event became the Bradford Whit Monday walk which regularly drew thousands of spectators.

British Grand Prix of Race Walking cont’d There will be a strong Yorkshire contingent in the race, including Jo Jackson from Redcar (Middlesbrough & Cleveland AC), the reigning Commonwealth Champion and British Record holder over 20km. Joining her in the Women’s race will be Bethan Davies, who is based at the National Race Walking Centre in Leeds. In only her second year as a race walker, she made her Great Britain debut in the 2013 European Cup Race Walking in Slovakia, as well as setting numerous Welsh records.

The Men’s 20km will feature Leeds based New Zealander, Quentin Rew, who represented New Zealand in the London Olympic Games over 50km and finished 17th in the IAAF Championships in in August. He set a new national record over 20km when he won the German National 20km Championships in April this year.

Leeds Metropolitan University student Tom Bosworth has been one of Britain’s top two male walkers for the last four years and represented England in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Also stepping up to 20km in 2014 will be Jamie Higgins (Leeds City AC) who finished 7th in this summer’s European Junior Championships in Rieti, Italy over 10,000m, the highest finish by a British athlete in this event since 1987. Ellie Dooley from Leeds City AC is Britain’s top junior walker and is the reigning National Under 20 Champion and represented Great Britain in the IAAF World Race Walking Cup in 2012.

The launch event was attended by race walkers including Ellie Dooley, Tom Bosworth and Bethan Davies.

Karen Farman held on by less than a second to snatch victory in the fourth race of the Bob Wright Handicap Series. She held off a fast finishing Stuart Le Noury who has started the race 4 minutes and 45 seconds after the winner. Getting into a good race walking mode, Karen recorded a personal best time as did second placed Le Noury, who also had the fastest actual time of the day. There was a gap of thirty seconds before third walker Mick Le Sauvage finished, closely followed by Dave Dorey. Rob Elliott got the better of Jayne Le Noury in the final metres to claim 5th place, whilst Gordon Mercier in only his second walk held on to deny Phil Lockwood by a second. Gordon Mercier being better known as a runner with the GIAAC going back many years. Kay Coulson and Kevin Le Noury took the final two positions. Karen Farman was the quickest of the women with an actual time of 13.49, ahead of Jayne Le Noury at 13.58. The Electronic System for Loss of Contact Control in Race Walking by B. Bowman The paper by Antonio Amigo is not a realistic solution to the judging of race walking. In fact, it is inferior to the Dennis Furlong design, which was not a realistic solution. It should be pointed out that any idea such as this needs to be tested properly before the IAAF gives it serious consideration. The cost of this testing should not be born by the IAAF.

Judging of the bent knees would still be needed unless we eliminate this part of the rule.

If the contact rule (at present by the human eye) is strictly enforced, everyone would be disqualified, unless walking very slowly. It would essentially kill the sport. The ‘new’ Furlong designs eliminates this problem by measuring the amount of allowable loss of contact. A requirement necessary for any viable design.

The IAAF rejected the Furlong designs because of reliability and impracticality and the reliability of this design would still be a significant issue.

The author notes the sport of fencing which uses an electronic touch system. If you watched the recent Olympic fencing competition, you would have seen the many times when the electronic system failed to register. Video was then used to determine if a touch had been made.

Bob Bowman. N.A.S.A. Scientist.

A copy of Antonio Amigo’s paper has been loaded on to the Race Walking Record’s website if you wish to read it. http://racewalkingrecord.co.uk/antonio-amigos-paper-of-electronic-system-for-loss-of-contact/

T.McDermot of Yorkshire Race Walking Club I wish only the best to the mass 5km participation walk events that will shortly take place in Cork and Dublin, inspired by Robbie Heffernan, profits from which will go to their new Race Walking Centre.

Good luck to the Irish. Success should breed more success.

Meanwhile the Russian Minister of Sport has announced new funding of 19 million dollars to develop the Saransk centre, on top of their annual 4 million budget. In a region where school PE teachers earn double if they teach race walkers, and where the very best of the best (of thousands) get sent to Chegin for elite training. http://www.walkcentral.com/ivanov-interview.php

Our sole Race Walker in Moscow performed most creditably - 31st in 86.40 (out of 62 starters) in warm conditions in his first major championship - and no one should be judgmental about what he thinks is personally best for him.

Still, we've now lost one of our three potential Great British 50km participants in Rio 2016. Who will the other two be now?

Any 90 minute 20km man, and there are many, can achieve an International Championship Qualification at 50km if they are psychologically suited to Race Walking for nearly Four Hours, but very few have the necessary mental qualities to achieve this. UK Athletics should have been identifying and initially supporting such potential walkers for Rio at least 12 months ago but that organisation is , unfortunately, top-heavy with lottery funded management and keyboard clickers who are unable to understand their particular events, or what is really happening at the grass roots level, or even maintain contact with striving athletes. In any discipline.

It seems that there is no National Development Plan for future 50km walkers (from the junior age group onwards), in one of our most successful events in the whole history of British Athletics. It is wrong that we seem to require 84 min Senior guys at 20km before any consideration of prospects at 50km.

T.McDermot cont’d This is a massive mistake as it means that such athletes should consider the classic 50km distance only if they are initially found too slow at the shorter event. Negative thinking like this will help nobody.

Just like race horses, walkers are individually suited to a certain distance, and will develop at their own rate.

BMAF News :Masters Race Walking Survey by I Richards In order that I might truly represent Masters and try to develop the service that the BMAF provides to the walking community, it would be helpful to know the extent of older walkers participation, their commitment and general views of where masters sit in the overall walking scene.

It would be really helpful, therefore, if anyone age 35 or over were to complete the on line survey which can be accessed at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/283C5FT . If anyone would prefer a paper copy please contact me at 24, Pevensey Road, Worthing, BN11 5NS : E-mail ianrichards.racewalker @virginmedia.com or ask me if you see me at a race.

This is probably the most comprehensive survey done about grass roots race walking for many years and should help provide an informed view about the current state of walking as a sport or athletic event if you see it that way. I hope, therefore, that as many people as possible will complete it. I will publish a report with the results for the benefit of everyone and a separate report on how I propose to react to the findings.

Thank you in anticipation.

…. And finally Thank you for taking the time to read this issue. If you want to include any information, results, fixtures or letter please send them to us by (generally) 20th of the month for inclusion in the next month’s issue.
