Truly He is Risen! The joy of Easter fills our hearts, minds and souls with a great peace and love like a light fills a dark room, scattering the darkness and warming the room with its rays. This joy is so great, that we should never let it go. We should embrace the joy of Easter, the same way we embrace the joy of Christmas, and carry it with us throughout the entire year. Yet, it seems that the joy of Easter, much like that of Christmas, fades as we return to the routine of the daily wear and tear. Yet, this does not have to be. In our frequent reception of the sacraments, most especially of Penance and the Eucharist, we renew within us the fruits of the cross and resurrection, to ever keep burning brightly within us the joy of Easter. Each of the sacraments bring us the joy of Easter in their own way and in response to our need at that time. In uniting ourselves in thought, word and deed to the Passion of Christ , offering our lives to Him and spiritually dying with Him upon the Cross, we have come to share, through the sacraments, in a foretaste of the new life of Christ Jesus, risen and glorified. When we were children or new converts to the faith it was by our Baptism that we were buried in the watery sepulcher of the earth in order to rise a new creation in Christ, dignified and precious because we were purchased by Him through His death and resurrection. Baptism, though, is not the end of our sacramental life. Baptism is ordered unto and completed in our real and true communion with Christ Jesus, crucified and risen, when we receive the Eucharist. Emeritus Benedict XVI taught: “The sacrament of Baptism, by which we were conformed to Christ, incorporated in the Church and made children of God, is the portal to all the sacraments. It makes us part of the one Body of Christ (cf. 1 Cor 12:13), a priestly people. Still, it is our participation in the Eucharistic sacrifice which perfects within us the gifts given to us at Baptism.” Furthermore, our share in the common priesthood of Jesus Christ bestowed upon us at our Baptism is “perfected” when our sacramental character is augmented in Confirmation and we receive the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit. Still, our Baptism and Confirmation, and share in the priesthood of Jesus Christ bestowed by these sacraments, are most perfectly fulfilled when we offer our prayers and sacrifices at Mass and come to share in the risen and glorified body of Christ Jesus in the Eucharist. It is in reception of the Eucharist and its fruits that we receive the goal and fruits of the Paschal sacrifice of Christ: the forgiveness of sins and a share in His eternal life. Living our Baptism and Confirmation calls us to refresh within ourselves the fruits of the by our frequent reception of the sacraments of Penance and the Eucharist, to never lose the joy of Easter. It is also through our Sunday worship that we celebrate the reality of Easter throughout the year. Each Sunday is a “little Easter”. In our Baptism we receive the character of Sunday worship (Dominicus character), we have imprinted upon our souls the joy of Easter. It is as a new creation, sharing in the resurrection of Jesus, that we worship Christ on all Sundays throughout the year. Sunday’s then are unique days for Christians to worship God. Pope Benedict teaches: “Indeed, it is defined by something more than the simple suspension of one's ordinary activities, a sort of parenthesis in one's usual daily rhythm. Christians have always experienced this day as the first day of the week, since it commemorates the radical newness brought by Christ. Sunday is thus the day when Christians rediscover the eucharistic form which their lives are meant to have. ‘Living in accordance with the Lord's Day’ means living in the awareness of the liberation brought by Christ and making our lives a constant self-offering to God, so that his victory may be fully revealed to all humanity through a profoundly renewed existence.” By our Baptism, Confirmation and frequent reception of the Eucharist, we become a “resurrected” people witnessing to the future glory that awaits us all in heaven. May you always know the joy of Easter through the sacraments!

Query: Why before Vatican Council II were women required to keep their heads covered in church but men were not permitted? Obviously women have the option today to cover their head. Jewish men are required to cover their heads but I do not believe Jewish women are permitted head coverings. Is there a connection between the and Yamaka?

I know members of the may wear head coverings (beretta, zucchetto) but layman may not. Many years ago I met a CFR (brother, not priest) from Germany who wore a knitted . The cap looked very much like an abbreviated or enlarged zucchetto. He told me it is was not part of his Habit and any Catholic Man could wear one. I don’t recall if he wore it in church.

Response: The discipline for women to wear head coverings and men not, in church, comes from St. Paul in First Corinthians 11: 4 - 16. Furthermore, the norm for women to wear a head covering in church was enshrined in the 1917 Code of Canon Law in canon 1262 §2. However, when the was promulgated this discipline was not retained. So why?

If we look at St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians the primary significance of women wearing a head covering was modesty. This virtue is perennial and ought to be extolled with greater emphasis today. However, the passage from First Corinthians also expresses the man’s authority over the women and that the woman wears a head covering as a sign of his authority over her. In the greater ecclesiological and christological significance of this passage, we see this not as a denigration of a women’s dignity but of the mutual espousal of Christ to the Church, his bride, and the Church being subject to the authority of Christ, her head and how this is made present to the world by the witness of the sacrament of matrimony. Yet, at the time of the Second Vatican Council, the western world, and not just the United States, was experiencing a cultural revolution which included a strong re-imaging of the feminine in our societies. Especially impactful in historically protestant countries and those whose legal systems were derived from English Common Law, greatly developed by Sir William Blackstone, women were considered men’s possessions, chattel, and the wife did not have an independent legal existence during the marriage, she was feme-covert. (See Blackstone, Commentaries on the Laws of England, Bk. 1, Ch. 15) In just reaction to this legal perspective, the feminist movement sought to eradicate from society any semblance of such a derogatory practice. Now, it ought to be stated that the Second Vatican Council had nothing to do with this change in discipline, nor the reform of the Mass, but that society led the way and the 1983 Code of Canon Law reflected the overall zeitgeist of western cultural changes in this regard. Though, one is still free to wear the head covering and, in light of the removal from a derogatory legal perspective of male ownership of their wife, perhaps the primary significance, that of modesty, could be retained, re-discovered and re-introduced.

Concerning the zucchetto, it derives its name from the Italian for pumpkin: “zucca”. This is because of the lined stitch pattern which creates a pumpkin like groove pattern. Clergy are able to wear the zucchetto or during the sacred liturgy, but at prescribed times. Never during the Eucharistic Prayer or when the is present outside of the tabernacle. Also, clergy are to remove their head covering during the Gospel and whenever the name of our Lord, Lady or the Saint of the Day is mentioned. And, after the name of the Lord is mentioned three times, they are to keep the head cover off, such as during the homily. So, while clergy are permitted to wear a head covering during the sacred liturgy, there is still norms that govern this activity. Lay men are not meant to wear a head covering during the sacred liturgy, unless it is being celebrated outdoors. Which, in short measure, will be occurring at our parish. Ask the Pastor…… Got a question? Ask the Pastor. If you have a question about the liturgy, canon law, theology, prayer, catholic traditions, and the reasons we uphold them, email Father Phil the question and it will be answered in an upcoming bulletin.

We Are Living in a MARIAN AGE

There is a great need in our society for our children to be brought closer to Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Blessed Mother has appeared to many individuals with her plea to bring everyone to salvation.

Why aren’t we LISTENING.

In the final vision of Fatima, October 13, 1917, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel appeared in the sky holding the Brown Scapular. Sister Lucia said this is because, “She wishes everyone to wear it; it is the sign of consecration of Her Immaculate Heart”.

Lucia saw additional visions representing the mysteries of the Rosary; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel represented the Glorious mysteries.

The last appearance of Our Lady to Bernadette Soubirous was on the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

Our Lady of Good Help – October 1859 (The only approved apparitions in the US, Champion, WI, was on Dec. 8, 2010 The Feast of the Immaculate Conception.) Our Lady asked Adele Brise in these apparitions to teach children what they should know about salvation.

The little Brown Scapular Coloring Book, The Story, Miracles and the Rosary Prayer will teach children about the Brown Scapular and the benefits received by wearing it. In addition, children will learn how to pray the Holy Rosary Prayer. The Brown Scapular is Our Lady’s garment and protection, and St. Padre Pio called the Rosary, “the weapon”.

Each book includes a children’s size Brown Scapular and a Glow in the Dark Rosary. The little Brown Scapular Apostolate, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was formed to spread the devotion of the Brown Scapular to parishes, Catholic schools and anyone who has a heart for Jesus and the Blessed Mother. Presentations are available and volunteers are needed. $7.99

Discounted prices offered for parishes, Catholic schools, homeschoolers, and wholesale prices for ministries/ retailers and retreat centers. Parish discount prices are available to individuals interested in purchasing books for parishes or Catholic schools. All tax deductible.

“Say your Rosary everyday….Wear the Scapular devoutly and perseveringly. It is my garment. To be clothed in it means you are continually thinking of me, and I in turn, am always thinking of you and helping you to secure eternal life.” Bulletin Sponsors
