  • BA MSS 17 NY Yankees Financial Records
Collection Number BA MSS 17 Title American League Base Ball Club of New York Records Inclusive Dates 1913-1950 Abstract Records of the American League Base Ball Club of New York and its minor league affiliates, consists almost exclusively of business and financial records, some of which date back to the earliest days of the Yankees organization. This unique collection provides information about the business and financial practices of a highly successful professional sports organization over a period of almost forty years. The collection consists of bound volumes including ledgers, cash books, trial balances, insurance policies, contract record books, contract record file cards, vouchers and invoices, journals, and other business records. The teams with the strongest coverage in the collection are the New York Yankees, Newark Bears, and Norfolk Tars. The collection also includes Yankee Stadium diaries from 1936, 1938, and 1940, which document fan injuries, ejections, and arrests at the stadium. Among the topics covered in the collection are: player salaries, including major players such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Joe DiMaggio; player transactions, including payments on the purchase of Babe Ruth’s contract from the Boston Red Sox in 1919; gate receipts, both home and away; general business practices; advertising and promotions; concessions; scouting expenses; and travel expenses. Also of interest in the collection is a small amount of material on the Negro Leagues. The Kansas City, Newark, New York, and Norfolk series have documentation on the use of ballparks for the play of Negro Leagues games, including dates, team names, and rent paid. Provenance Donated by the American League Base Ball Club of New York in 1955 and 1970.

  • The Offbeat Off Year
OFFBEAT OFF YEAR BY DOTTY LYNCH, SENIOR POLITICAL EDITOR, CBS NEWS Aunt Gertrude, my 97-year-old aunt in Marlboro, Massachusetts who usually doesn’t skip a beat, looked surprised when I said I was really busy this year on the election. “Oh no, that’s not coming up already, is it,” she asked. At first I thought she was starting to slip. Then I realized that I felt the same way. It seems like we were just counting chads in Florida yesterday. And then September 11 happened and our gyroscopes went out of whack. Campaign 2002 is being fought under the old rules in a world that is very different from the one where those rules made some sense. Democratic campaign consultants say, for the most part, that September 11 hasn’t affected their strategies - and they point to their victories in the 2001 gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey as shining examples of why September 11 shouldn’t matter this year when it didn’t affect races in November 2001. Republican consultants say much the same thing about their campaigns on a micro- level, but the White House has believed for the past year that the national unity which followed the terrorist attacks would work in their favor and give George Bush and the Republicans incredible political capital to spend on the mid-term elections, especially on recapturing the Senate. Karl Rove, the Bush White House political sage, got roundly criticized last winter for suggesting what every political operative knows to be true, that in the aftermath of September 11, the war on terrorism would be a great political asset for the GOP.

  • New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo – He's Not the Worst #Metoo Man but His
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo – He’s Not the Worst #MeToo Man But his PR is Near the Bottom Andrew Blum When you look at all the #MeToo men who did bad things to women – and some to men – there are gradations of evil. Al Franken is not Harvey Weinstein, and Louis CK is not Jeffrey Epstein. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a relatively recent addition to the #MeToo list, acted very badly to 11 women, according to a just completed investigation but he’s not worst. What he is horrible at was spinning the probe and its findings. All during the investigation, he held public events like nothing was wrong, often not letting the press attend or ask questions. Then on August 3, after New York Attorney General Letitia James released a 165-page report accusing him of the sexual harassment, he released a pre-recorded video in which he showed no remorse, did not apologize, issued a flat-out tone-deaf denial, made no admission of his behavior, and sounded like he never heard of #MeToo or sexual harassment. He refused to resign. This prompted all his local, state and federal allies among Democratic Party officialdom, voters, unions and donors to all but desert him in the face of almost certain impeachment by the state legislature. They all called for him to resign – right up to and including President Biden. About the only person who said Cuomo should not resign was Rudy Giuliani! I think it is because of the #MeToo movement and thePR ramifications of the bad behavior of powerful men of his ilk that Cuomo received such a public and political rebuke of his actions after the report issued by the NY Attorney General.

  • Reprinted Here Is a Remarkable Tribute Written by Irishman Kevin Myers About Canada's Record of Quiet Valour in Wartime
Reprinted here is a remarkable tribute written by Irishman Kevin Myers about Canada's record of quiet valour in wartime. This article appeared in the April 21, 2002 edition of the Sunday Telegraph, one of Britain's largest circulation newspapers and in Canada's National Post on April 26, 2002. Salute to a brave and modest nation - Kevin Myers, 'The Sunday Telegraph', LONDON: Until the deaths of Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan , probably almost no one outside their home country had been aware that Canadian troops are deployed in the region. And as always, Canada will bury its dead, just as the rest of the world, as always will forget its sacrifice, just as it always forgets nearly everything Canada ever does.. It seems that Canada's historic mission is to come to the selfless aid both of its friends and of complete strangers, and then, once the crisis is over, to be well and truly ignored. Canada is the perpetual wallflower that stands on the edge of the hall, waiting for someone to come and ask her for a dance. A fire breaks out, she risks life and limb to rescue her fellow dance-goers, and suffers serious injuries. But when the hall is repaired and the dancing resumes, there is Canada, the wallflower still, while those she once helped glamorously cavort across the floor, blithely neglecting her yet again. That is the price Canada pays for sharing the North American continent with the United States, and for being a selfless friend of Britain in two global conflicts. For much of the 20th century, Canada was torn in two different directions: It seemed to be a part of the old world, yet had an address in the new one, and that divided identity ensured that it never fully got the gratitude it deserved.

  • The 48 Stars That People Like Less Than Anne Hathaway  by Nate Jones
The 48 Stars That People Like Less Than Anne Hathaway By Nate Jones Spend a few minutes reading blog comments, and you might assume that Anne Hathaway’s approval rating falls somewhere between that of Boko Haram and paper cuts — but you'd actually be completely wrong. According to E-Poll likability data we factored into Vulture's Most Valuable Stars list, the braying hordes of Hathaway haters are merely a very vocal minority. The numbers say that most people actually like her. Even more shocking? Who they like her more than. In calculating their E-Score Celebrity rankings, E-Poll asked people how much they like a particular celebrity on a six-point scale, which ranged from "like a lot" to "dislike a lot." The resulting Likability percentage is the number of respondents who indicated they either "like" Anne Hathaway or "like Anne Hathaway a lot." Hathaway's 2014 Likability percentage was 67 percent — up from 66 percent in 2013 — which doesn't quite make her Will Smith (85 percent), Sandra Bullock (83 percent), Jennifer Lawrence (76 percent), or even Liam Neeson (79 percent), but it does put her well above plenty of stars whose appeal has never been so furiously impugned on Twitter. Why? Well, why not? Anne Hathaway is a talented actress and seemingly a nice person. The objections to her boiled down to two main points: She tries too hard, and she's overexposed. But she's been absent from the screen since 2012'sLes Misérables, so it's hard to call her overexposed now. And trying too hard isn't the worst thing in the world, especially when you consider the alternative.
