That Cadillac is actually named after the founder of Detroit, Michigan, Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac. The Cadillac name was given by Henry Martyn Leland, the founder of the automobile company, because Cadillac headquarters is based in Detroit. The Cadillac crest is based on Cadillac’s coat of arms. Le Sieur Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, was a Frenchman who founded Detroit in 1701. While exploring what later became the Detroit River, Cadillac and his crew canoed along the shore before stopping at a spot at what is now Shelby Avenue and Jefferson Street. He established Fort Ponchartrain and named the location Detroit, the French word ("détroit") for "strait of a river." The French Crown recognized Detroit in 1706. Originally, it was designed to replace the entry level Series 65. The Fisher-bodied Series 62 replaced the Cadillac Series 61 at the lowest rung in the model lineup in 1940. The Series 62 featured a low sleek "torpedo" style C-body with chrome window reveals, more slant in the windshield, and a curved rear window. The new C-body that the 1940 Cadillac Series 62 shared with the Buick Roadmaster and Super, the Oldsmobile Series 90 and the Pontiac Torpedo featured shoulder and hip room that was over 5" wider, the elimination of running boards and exterior styling that was streamlined and 2-3" lower. When combined with a column mounted shift lever the cars offered true six passenger comfort. These changes had clearly been influenced by the Cadillac Sixty Special. The styling feature distinguishing all V-8 Cadillacs was once again the grille. Although grilles had the same pointed shape as in 1939, the grille bars were heavier and fewer in number. Two sets of louver bars appeared on each side of the hood. Running boards were a no cost option. The Series 62 was available as a club coupe or a sedan, with 2-door and 4-door convertibles introduced mid-year. Sales totaled 5903 in its inaugural year accounting for about 45% of Cadillac's sales. Winterizing your Cadillac – Bringing your baby back to life! With old man winter here on the island and making his presence known, Hagerty.com is reminding us of the importance of winterization of our Cadillacs. In this series Hagerty.com breaks down the steps of what do to with our cars for the winter and what we all must know to preserve these beautiful cars. This month we will focus on what to do to now that the car is coming out of storage. Charge the battery for a solid 24 hours. When returning the battery to the vehicle, attach the positive cable first. Once your car is uncovered, inspect it for any signs of insect or vermin damage. Remove the baking soda units. If you forget them, they may spill during driving. It’s a good idea to check for floor leaks, check all fluid levels, and check the tire pressures. Remove plastic bag (aluminum foil) from over air cleaner/air inlet and exhaust pipe(s). Apply the brakes ensure they work and that you have a good pedal. The steel brake lines can rust out and leak, and vermin can chew through the rubber brake hoses. Start the vehicle and check for any fluid leaks. Give it some extra time to warm up, and check the lights, horn, etc., while the temperature begins to rise. Drive it slowly for a mile or so. Some components such as transmissions and rear-ends require movement for full/proper lubrication. After driving a bit, check it again for leaks, etc. Your car cover may have become dusty over the long winter months — give it a good cleaning according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
