That Cadillac is actually named after the founder of Detroit, Michigan, Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac. The Cadillac name was given by Henry Martyn Leland, the founder of the automobile company, because Cadillac headquarters is based in Detroit. The Cadillac crest is based on Cadillac’s coat of arms. Le Sieur Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, was a Frenchman who founded Detroit in 1701. While exploring what later became the Detroit River, Cadillac and his crew canoed along the shore before stopping at a spot at what is now Shelby Avenue and Jefferson Street. He established Fort Ponchartrain and named the location Detroit, the French word ("détroit") for "strait of a river." The French Crown recognized Detroit in 1706. Originally, it was designed to replace the entry level Series 65. The Fisher-bodied Series 62 replaced the Cadillac Series 61 at the lowest rung in the model lineup in 1940. The Series 62 featured a low sleek "torpedo" style C-body with chrome window reveals, more slant in the windshield, and a curved rear window. The new C-body that the 1940 Cadillac Series 62 shared with the Buick Roadmaster and Super, the Oldsmobile Series 90 and the Pontiac Torpedo featured shoulder and hip room that was over 5" wider, the elimination of running boards and exterior styling that was streamlined and 2-3" lower. When combined with a column mounted shift lever the cars offered true six passenger comfort. These changes had clearly been influenced by the Cadillac Sixty Special. The styling feature distinguishing all V-8 Cadillacs was once again the grille. Although grilles had the same pointed shape as in 1939, the grille bars were heavier and fewer in number. Two sets of louver bars appeared on each side of the hood. Running boards were a no cost option. The Series 62 was available as a club coupe or a sedan, with 2-door and 4-door convertibles introduced mid-year. Sales totaled 5903 in its inaugural year accounting for about 45% of Cadillac's sales. If you would like a particular Cadillac model highlighted in next month’s newsletter, send your suggestion to Erin Edmonds at [email protected]. Winterizing your Cadillac – Bringing your baby back to life! With old man winter here on the island and making his presence known, Hagerty.com is reminding us of the importance of winterization of our Cadillacs. In this series Hagerty.com breaks down the steps of what do to with our cars for the winter and what we all must know to preserve these beautiful cars. This month we will focus on what to do to now that the car is coming out of storage. Charge the battery for a solid 24 hours. When returning the battery to the vehicle, attach the positive cable first. Once your car is uncovered, inspect it for any signs of insect or vermin damage. Remove the baking soda units. If you forget them, they may spill during driving. It’s a good idea to check for floor leaks, check all fluid levels, and check the tire pressures. Remove plastic bag (aluminum foil) from over air cleaner/air inlet and exhaust pipe(s). Apply the brakes ensure they work and that you have a good pedal. The steel brake lines can rust out and leak, and vermin can chew through the rubber brake hoses. Start the vehicle and check for any fluid leaks. Give it some extra time to warm up, and check the lights, horn, etc., while the temperature begins to rise. Drive it slowly for a mile or so. Some components such as transmissions and rear-ends require movement for full/proper lubrication. After driving a bit, check it again for leaks, etc. Your car cover may have become dusty over the long winter months — give it a good cleaning according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Page 4 Cadillac Club of Long Island DID YOU KNOW? From 1993 to 1994, there was a cartoon on CBS called, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs? Cadillacs and Dinosaurs was an American Saturday morning animated television series which aired on CBS Kids in the United States from 1993 to 1994. Based on the comic book of the same by Mark Schultz, the show was created by screenwriter Steven E. de Souza (Die Hard and 48 Hrs.), who acquired the TV rights after producing the video game Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, which was also based on Schultz's comic. It is the story of the adventures of the human survivors in a future dinosaur dominated world. The series followed the exploits of Jack Tenrec and his crew of ecological freedom fighters known as the "Mechanics". His often-reluctant companion is the foreign ambassador Hannah Dundee. She hires Jack as a liaison while she attempts to create clear communication between her land and the modern civilization. Together they confront the serious issues facing the futuristic environment that humanity has come to inhabit. In total, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs lasted for one season of 13 episodes and was never considered for renewal. All 13 episodes currently air on HBO Family in Latin America, and have continually done so for many years. They can be viewed dubbed in Spanish or in their original English. The show is also available in the US through the online retailer Amazon by their direct download service.(Information courtesy of Wikipedia.org) DID YOU KNOW? In the classic movie ‘The Solid Gold Cadillac’ (1956) to better show off the 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz, the final sequence was filmed in color and on location in Rockefeller Center in New York City. 11 Historic Philippine Presidential Cars We Love Ref.: http://www.wheninmanila.com/11-historic-philippine-presidential-cars/ June 12, 2015 Article By: Adrian John Ladaga. Today is the 117th Independence Day of the Philippines, and in more than a century of being a free nation, we dig up some of the most important pieces of history. We focused our research on the cars that were used by current and previous presidents as they offer a gateway to the lives and duties of the busy and well-travelled heads of our state. These presidential cars have served as official carriers of the nation’s top leaders, and have witnessed some of the most critical events in the country’s history. The president’s car must not only keep its VIP passenger safe, but also exude grandeur and authority. After all, it works as an extension of the powers and responsibility of the person inside. 11 Historic Philippine Presidential Cars We Love 11. Emilio Aguinaldo – 1924 Single Six Packard Model 226 After more than 300 years of being under the control of Spain, Emilio Aguinaldo was officially recognized as the president of the first republic. He had a short term from 1899 to 1901 during which he did not have an official presidential car. Aguinaldo, however, owned a 1924 Single Six Packard Model 226, a seven-seater limousine. It runs on a 4.3-Liter engine that provides 55 horsepower and was restored by the Vintage Car Club of the Philippines and the Philippine Motor Association. The car is on display at Aguinaldo’s mansion in Kawit, Cavite.
