What kind of challenges does a graphic designer face? Half of the population don’t know what graphic design is, and the other half aren’t aware of the importance of visual communication, which all make being a graphic designer in the Arab world a difficult task The lack of proper Arabic Ghada typefaces has been a problem I had to face since I was a university student. I always wondered why there aren’t enough Arabic typefaces in ratio to Latin ones! I was shocked to know that there are only 72 well-designed Arabic fonts compared to thousands of Latin. Working in advertising and dealing with multinational brands everyday makes it a very challenging task, since we face the problem of creating a bilingual logo or font. I’m not a fan of harmonizing Arabic Wali fonts to create matching Latin fonts; instead I work on pre- serving and respecting the character of the Arabic letters as well as the Latin’s. Designers face many other problems from clients’ preferences and insufficient brand research, to technical difficulties and proect budget limitations Besides the many mediums for design adaptations could be hard to execute. A well-designed identity is one that could be easily used on various mediums and applications both consistently and effectively. Language barriers are challenging tasks as well and are very common when dealing with interna- tional brands. For example, creating a bilingual brand that feels, looks, and communicates the same with the Arab and foreign consumers is a complex task when it comes under application. On the other hand, a lot of brands fall in the trap of following the conventional identity guidelines without focusing on creativity, innovation and change. The targeted audience is also a huge factor that identity designers need to consider, brands that target various segments are harder to design than brands with specific target groups

Being selected among the Forbes list 30 under 30- Europe- 2017 is a great achievement. How did this make you feel? Honoured and pressured to push further. It demands years of hard work and tons of unmet trials before an Arab woman can make it to just the surface of having a fair chance of global recognition in a male-west dominated world. I am sure that within one story that is recognized, there are a million stories of women out there that have failed to reach out to a honest reection, and a documentation public mass. scripts, history and finding innovative What advice would you give to young graphic designers who look up to you? You are changing lives here, so you better have big beliefs no doubt that the Art field was my main and conviction. Fall in love with them, do not doubt or stop them no matter how tempting distractions can be. Work hard like there is no tomorrow, carry on with this pace so you can create the future, and don’t settle for mediocrity. The point is, if you could truly inspire one person by succeeding in chang- ing a little bit their way of thinking or touching their hearts, at this moment it will just beat anything you have ever experi- enced. So work hard for that!

It is a pity that we have fallen my first step in my ourney, and I believed into not only visual pollution, but visual illiteracy. My objective as a designer is to both learn and educate people through graphic design and leverage it as a tool for positive change. I want to create a visual revolution in my country. I wish that one day I could be responsible for implementing the role of graphic design in education, tourism, politics, social design and other fields, where design can contribute with a huge percentage in promoting, maximizing and reviving our country in all areas, as keep up with the latest trends I also find proven in all other countries in the world hallenin reae in

30 insight Story Driven by her inner desire to help people and guide them through life challenges, the ravishing Radwa El Sherbiny started her glittering career as a TV presenter. Through her show ‘Heya w Bas’ (All about Her) and her upcoming fashion line ‘Tamarind’, she has created loving communities where women can be their independent selves. El Sherbiny guides women to step outside the limita- tions set upon them by traditions and helps them discover their true potential. The powerful feminist tells us her story and gives Arab women advice on how to find their sovereignty. How were you drawn to your career as a TV presenter? I have never wanted to be famous, but being a TV presenter was very becoming of my character. I’m social and I love to offer help when I can. With this job, I had the ability to reach and interact with a massive number of diverse people. It was the only job that could make me feel like I’m truly living the life I wanted. Being a show host is not merely a gateway to wealth and fame, or accruing relation- ships to attain something, but a strong passion.

If you weren’t a TV presenter, what you would like to be? When I was a kid, I wanted to be a pilot or a fashion designer! My parents wouldn’t approve either jobs because ying can be dangerous, and fashion design was not conventionally a respect- able job in Egypt 18 years ago. So if I wasn’t hosting shows, I would want to be a pilot or a fashion designer. I’m happy to say I did make my one of my child- hood dreams come true: I’m launching a new fashion line called ‘Tamarind’, exclusively for women. Radwa What you want to do in the future? I’m not of those people who like to plan every step ahead. Whatever I end up doing, I just want to be me. I don’t want to change or be compelled to affecta- tion. I feel so blessed with the gifts I have in my life including my family, friends and colleagues. The inspirational adventurer, Hamsa Mansour, was delightfully rousing to speak to on her travels and astounding future plans. Though it’s difficult for us to believe, Mansour says she wasn’t always the energetic daredevil she is today; her men- tal and physical transformation are what truly establish her as an influential adventurer, whom we anticipate will soon be widely recognised around the globe that she will continue to trek. Most importantly, the journey she’s about to commence this November will prep her to become the first female cyclist to solo-cycle Egypt in 2019. As she flouts conventions and orthodox lifestyles, Mansour’s progressing journey is the epitome of oneness with nature and intrepidity. By: Mayar El-Shamy
