LAMORINDA WEEKLY | "A Royal Affair" Published March 27th, 2013 "A Royal Affair" By Sophie Braccini Something is glamorous in the kingdom of Denmark. From that country comes to Orinda April 5 a story of intrigue and love on a backdrop of factual 18th century history in the film "A Royal Affair." Few Americans know the importance German doctor Johann Friedrich Struensee had in the battle between enlightenment and obscurity in 18th century Europe. Struensee (played by Mads Mikkelsen, "The Hunt," "Casino Royale") was recruited by progressive members of the Danish Court to take care of King Christian VII (Mikkel Boe Folsgaard) in 1770. The immature, libertine and manic- depressive king was neither the embodiment of a great monarch nor a decent husband to the young British princess Caroline Mathilda (Alicia Vikander), who was married to him at age 16. Thanks to the trust he placed in Struensee, a reader of Rousseau and Voltaire who had himself written a few pamphlets on freedom, the monarch transformed into a progressive king, infuriating the more conservative amongst his court. Then, an attraction between the queen and the doctor materialized into a romance that precipitated their demise. The friendship between the king and his doctor, with Photo provided trust and manipulation intertwined, adds spice to the story. Danish star Mikkelsen is almost overshadowed by much less known Folsgaard as the weak but touching king. Folsgaard's portrayal is at times frightening, at times charming, and often unsettling. The movie is probably on its way to become an international success; it was very well received at the Berlin International Film Festival, where Folsgaard won for Best Actor (Nikolaj Arcel and Rasmus Heisterberg won for Best Script). -

CZECH FILM COMMISSION / we speak filmmaking Press Release Prague, Feb. 28, 2012 – The film - A ROYAL AFFAIR, which has recently won two “Silver Bear” awards at the Berlin International Film Festival, is proof of how beneficial the incentives from the Film Industry Support Programme can be. The film A Royal Affair was filmed in the Czech Republic in 2011. Its successful premiere took place within the prestigious 62nd Berlin International Film Festival, where it was awarded two “Silver Bear Statues” - Mikkel Boe Folsgaard for best actor and Nicolaj Arcel (film director) with Rasmus Heisterberg for best script. “A film winning awards at such a prestigious event as the Berlinale is extremely important for the entire project of film industry support. It sends a clear message to other interested film producers: the Czech Republic boasts a filmmaking tradition, as well as beautiful locations and professional people well versed in filmmaking who it can offer and who will devote their talent, expertise and experience to such pictures that can hold their own in the global competition of significant international festivals,” said Ludmila Claussová of the Czech Film Commission. A Royal Affair was co-produced by Zentropa Entertainments (Denmark), Sirena Film (CR), Trollhättan Film (Sweden) and Zentropa Entertainments (Germany). The co-production share of the CR was 10% of the total film budget. “The main film producer - the Danish company Zentropa chose the Czech Republic for filming thanks mainly to the previous good filming experience with the Sirena Film Company and for economic reasons,” said Ludmila Claussová of the Czech Film Commission. “Due to the fact that less than a year before the beginning of the shoot, the CR had introduced the incentive system, the producers were able not only to make the film more grandiose within the given budget in Bohemia but also to have more days for shooting it,” she added. -

Director’s statement – “A Royal Affair” A Royal Affair is based on one of the most dramatic events in Danish and indeed European history; whenever I used to pitch the film to foreign investors, people had a hard time believing that the story was true, that these momentous events had actually happened in the late 1700’s. In Denmark however, it is taught in school, more than 15 books have been written about it (both factual and fictional) and there has even been an opera and a ballet. I feel honored and extremely lucky to finally bring the full story to the screen. Tonally, I was inspired by the great epics from the 40’s and 50’s where films would often feel like literary works, structured around characters and the passage of time, and not clearly following the obvious screenplay roadmaps.
