The 1793 act created a class of tenants known as ‘forty shilling freeholders’ and these were also given the right to vote in parliamentary elections. The Nedhams had political ambitions and were keen to create voters, hence the granting of leases. In return for a lease tenants were expected to vote for the Needham interest. 10. The Doyle family was well established in Kilkeel and the surrounding townlands during the late 18 th Century, with John Doyle and Thomas Dr. V Marmion Doyle appearing on the 1796 Flax Growers list. Flax was processed to produce oil and textile goods, and as such was an important cash crop of the 18th and 19th Centuries. During this time period, thousands of Irish farmers grew the crop for their livelihood. One benefit of flax was that it was harvested relatively early, bound into bundles and put into a water filled ditch, known locally as a 'shuck' which was usually close to a stream or river. This process went under the term retting. You knew where and when by the intensity of the smell! When the outer layer had rotted off the inner fibres were then sent to the mill and bleached. Milling determined the quality of the cloth and bleaching was used to improve the saleable attraction.
