  • Administration of Donald J. Trump, 2019 Remarks Honoring the World
Administration of Donald J. Trump, 2019 Remarks Honoring the World Series Champion Washington Nationals November 4, 2019 The President. Well, thank you very much, everyone. I have to say, this is a record. We've never had this many people on the front lawn of the White House. So congratulations. Just another record for the Nats. But today the First Lady and I are thrilled to welcome to the White House the 2019 World Series Champions, the Washington Nationals. For the first time in nearly 100 years, our Nation's Capital is celebrating a World Series victory. That's big stuff. The last time Washington, DC, was home to the World Series champs, the President was a gentleman named Calvin Coolidge. That's a long time ago. Nearly a century later, the Nationals have brought back the trophy to America's Capital, and you've won it. This is the first World Series in franchise history, and it's going to be, really, the first of many, I predict. I want to congratulate the terrific owners of the team. Your principal owner, Mark Lerner, and Ted Lerner. Great people. The Lerner family. A man who's become very famous—I think he's much more famous than me right now— General Manager Mike Rizzo. You have become very famous, huh? General Manager and President of Baseball Operations Mike Rizzo. Thank you, sir. The President. A manager—and you watch all the mistakes made in baseball and other sports, and then you watch what this man did as manager. He didn't make any.

DISCLAIMER: This document does not meet current format guidelines Graduate School at the The University of Texas at Austin. of the It has been published for informational use only. Running Head: EXPLOITATION IN COLLEGE SPORTS 1 Exploitation in College Sports: The Amateurism Hoax and the True Value of an Education Bill Doane The University of Texas at Austin EXPLOITATION IN COLLEGE SPORTS 2 Exploitation in College Sports The Amateurism Hoax and the True Value of an Education Introduction Racism and exploitation in intercollegiate athletics have garnered a great deal of scholarly attention over the last thirty years. As athletic departments’ revenues from ticket sales and from football and men’s basketball television contracts continue to grow, the critical discourse regarding the treatment of student-athletes mounts. Between 1996 and 2013, the TV contracts for major college football grew from $185 million to $725 million, and the 2017 NCAA March Madness basketball tournament generated $1.1 billion in television rights alone. However, the NCAA national office is not alone in such riches. Individual universities enjoy sizeable revenues from their successful football and men’s basketball teams with schools like the University of Wisconsin and the University of California, Los Angeles, receiving $6.5 million each for merely participating in the 1994 Rose Bowl Game, the post-season event dubbed “The Granddaddy of Them All” (Eitzen, 1996). Some of these bowl game revenues are passed along to college coaches in the form of incentive bonuses on top of their considerable salaries (the average salary for major college football head coach during the 2016-2017 academic year was in excess of $3.3 million) but most of these revenues are reinvested in the program or used to support other, non-revenue generating teams on campus.

The 20th Annual HBCU National Tennis Championships will be held on Thursday- Sunday, September 16-19, 2021. Tennis continues to be one of the fastest growing sports in America. The interest by African-Americans grows in popularity and participation with the play of current tennis stars, such as 2017 U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens, 2017 U.S Open finalist Madison Keys, Cori Gauff who made her Wimbledon debut this year, defeating her idol Venus Williams and making it to the fourth round, and of course Serena and Venus Williams, pioneers of women’s tennis. FAMU’s own Althea Gibson was the first African-American to win back-to-back Wimbledon and the US Championships titles in 1957 and 1958. This four-day tournament and a free tennis clinic will host more than 20 college tennis programs (both men and women) from historically black colleges and universities (HBCU), who will contend for this prestigious title. Last year events highlighted such teams as Alabama A&M, Alcorn State, Arkansas Pine-Bluff, Bethune-Cookman, Clark-Atlanta, Florida A&M, Hampton, North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T State, Prairie View A&M, South Carolina State, Southern University, Tennessee State, Virginia State, Winston-Salem State and Xavier University of Louisiana.
