4 #4DIM 2019 UIW SOFTBALL STORYLINES DYNAMIC FRESHMAN RENEE HOFFMAN MAKING EARLY IMPACT Renee Hoffman became the second true freshman to start at pitcher on Opening Day in as many years under coach Joe DiPietro, and in her first appearance went six innings without surrendering a walk against Fordham.

She also retired 12 of the last 15 hitters she faced, while recording a base hit in her first career at-bat in the same game. Hoffman is one of two Cardinals who have recorded an extra-base hit after one weekend of play and leads the team in innings pitched with 12. Her 5:3 strikeout-to-walk ratio is best on the team.

ANGEL IN THE INFIELD: VILLANUEVA PROVIDES OFFENSIVE SPARK Senior second baseman/shortstop Angel Villanueva has been driving the ball well to open up the 2019 season. She’s already matched her 2018 season total for doubles after just five games and currently leads the team in extra-base hits.

Villanueva is second on the team in slugging percentage at .385 and leads the team in total bases with five. She’s also the only Cardinal with a stolen base after one weekend of action.

GUZMAN LOOKS TO BUILD ON BREAKOUT SOPHOMORE YEAR Delaney Guzman is looking to match her terrific sophomore campaign, where she led the team in five categories at the plate (home runs, runs, doubles, triples, and slugging percentage).

She established herself as one of the most clutch players in the conference last year, notching four game-winning hits on the season, including the go-ahead three-run home run in a 6-4 win over HBU on 3/30/2018 and another game-winning blast against the Huskies one day earlier.

The Richmond Foster product recorded six multi-hit games and three multi-RBI games in 2018 and is looking to duplicate those efforts in 2019.

Joe DiPietro was named the 12th UIW head softball coach in program history when he was hired in July, 2017.

DiPietro comes to the Alamo City from Drexel University in Philadelphia, where he spent one season as an assistant coach to Carl Taylor. Prior to his stint with the Dragons, DiPietro spent two season as head coach at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. DiPietro led the Lady Pirates to a 22-win season in his first season with the squad in 2015.

DiPietro spent five seasons as the head coach of Temple University in Philly, where the Owls won 115 games in that span. The softball team was the only program at the school to increase their win total every season. The Owls made three consecutive conference tournament appearances, culminated by a school-record 32 wins in 2013.

Prior to his time at Temple, DiPietro spent six seasons at another Philly school in La Salle University, where he led the Explorers to 22 wins in 2008, the most wins by the program in 11 years.

Kaylyn Zierke enters her second season as a graduate assistant coach for the UIW softball team.

Zierke is very familiar with UIW head coach, Joe DiPietro, as he coached her at Temple University until the program discontinued. After spending one year at Murray State University, Zierke played her final two years of softball at St. Joseph’s University, wher she was an All-Atlantic 10 First Team Catcher and was team captain.

Zierke is getting her MBA in finance at UIW.

Chelsea Butler Assistant Coach First Season | Buena Park, Calif.

Butler comes to UIW with over a decade of experience both as a collegiate student-athlete and pitching coach at the Division I level. She will lead the pitching staff and will assist in recruiting and team workouts for UIW softball.

She most recently spent four years as the associate head coach at Presbyterian College (2014-2018). She was in charge of the pitching staff and designing off-season and in-season workouts,while also serving as the recruiting coordinator. She coached three All-Big South pitchers, 18 NFCA Scholar Athletes, and helped the Blue Hose earn 2015 Big South runner-up honors.

As a player, Butler was a two-year pitcher (2008-09) for Eastern Kentucky. Her career was highlighted by a standout senior season in which she posted a 2.32 ERA. Prior to arriving at EKU, Butler played two seasons at Golden West Junior College. As a sophomore there, she posted a 21-13 record with a 1.35 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 231.2 innings of work. She earned first team all-conference recognition and was an all-tournament selection.

Butler graduated from Concordia University-Irvine in May 2017 with a Masters of Arts in Coaching and Athletic Administration. She also earned a degree in sociology from Eastern Kentucky (2009).

• Appeared in 34 games and started 24 last season • Her 16 RBIs were second-most on the team, three of which came off a pinch-hit home run against Texas A&M on 3/3/2018 • Castro didn’t shy away from big name opponents last season: she hit .286 against Big 12 opponents with an RBI and two walks

Jaylin Olivarez #6 | 5-1 | Junior | Second Base/SS | Biology Corpus Christi, Texas | Carroll HS

• Appeared in 13 games and started six last season • Had three hits, one double and three RBIs as a sophomore after starting one game as a freshman • Opened the scoring with a two-RBI double in the second game of the doubleheader against Central Arkansas on 3/16/2018

Mackenzie Stark #13 | 5-4 | Senior | Infield | Business Plano, Texas | Plano East HS (Ranger JC)

• Appeared in 14 games and started all 14 of them after missing the first 35 games of the season because of injury • In her first game back from injury, went 3-3 with an RBI and two runs against Texas Southern on 4/3/2018 • Her ability to drive the ball makes her a threat in each plate appearance she makes. She registered a slugging percentage of .389 and an on-base percentage of .359 in limited action last year

• Appeared in 22 games and started 12 as a junior last year • Flores recorded a team-high .408 on-base percentage (minimum 35 at-bats), showcasing her teriffic plate vision and discipline • Nina’s older sister Monica is a senior outfielder on the team. The two come from an athletic family, with relatives who play soccer at UIW and Southwestern University

Shelby Neatherlin #16 | 5-10 | Senior | Third Base | Rehab Science San Antonio, Texas | Taft HS (Ranger JC)

• Appeared in 36 games and started all 36 of them as a junior last year • Had four multi-hit games and four doubles on the year • Neatherlin is one of the most patient hitters in the confernece. Her team-high 19 walks also placed her in the top-20 in the SLC. Ad- ditionally, she finished fourth on the team in on-base percentage (.346)

Angel Villanueva #22 | 5-4 | Senior | Second Base/SS | Kinesiology Orange, Texas | Little Cypress-Mauriceville HS

• Appeared in 33 games and started 24 as a junior last season • Had 13 runs, 20 hits, two doubles, one triple, and two home runs. She also registered nine RBIs and had slugging and on-base per- centages of .441 and .385, respectively • Villanueva is known for her consistent approach at the plate. During a one-month stretch ast year, she recorded at least one hit in 12 out of 16 games

• Appeared in 23 games and started 13 as a freshman last season • Provided solid infield support with a .938 fielding percentage, 26 putouts and 19 assists. She recorded a season-high five putouts against Kansas on 3/21/2018 • Goins comes from an athletics family: her twin sister, Jordan, is also on the UIW softball team. She has two uncles who played Division I baseball (one went on to play for the San Diego Padres) and a cousin who played for Dallas Baptist and later for the Toronto Blue Jays

Jordan Goins #1 | 5-3 | Sophomore | Outfield | Pre-Pharmacy Universal City, Texas | Judson HS

• Appeared in 22 games and started 13 as a freshman last season • Went 3-4 with an RBI to go along with a season-high four putouts against Houston Baptist on 3/30/2018 • Known for her defensive prowess, Goins recorded a perfect fielding percentage playing multiple positions in the outfield

Monica Flores #5 | 5-7 | Senior | Outfield | Criminal Justice Eagle Pass, Texas | Eagle Pass HS

• Appeared in 38 games and started 33 in as a junior last season • Hit .235 with five doubles, one home run, and eight RBIs. She recorded multiple-hit games five separate times • Another tremendous defensive player, Flores finished the season with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, which included a total of 60 putouts, one assist, and one double play. She was one of only five players in the Southland Conference with at least 60 putouts to have a perfect fielding percentage • Named team captain for 2019

13 @uiwsoftball 2019 UIW SOFTBALL OUTFIELDERS Lexi Shaw #7 | 5-5 | Junior | Outfield | Nursing Houston, Texas | Cy Falls HS (Daytona State)

• Appeared in 27 games as an outfielder and six games as a pitcher during her sophomore campaign at Daytona State College • Hit .288 with a .398 on-base percentage and .315 slugging percentage • Possesses a combination of mobility and power, swiping two bases while driving in 11 RBIs last season

Hope Sobolewski #10 | 5-7 | Senior | Outfield/1B | Criminal Justice Moreno Valley, Calif. | Canyon Springs HS (Hampton)

• Appeared in 46 games and started 45 as a junior last season • Tied for the team lead with nine multiple-hit games which included seven two-hit contests and two 3-hit performances • Sobolewski is one of the primary creators of offense in the lineup. Last year, she drove in 20 RBIs and tallied a team high five multi- ple-RBI games

Teanna Lucio #24 | 5-3 | Sophomore | Outfield | Physical Therapy Taylor, Texas | Taylor HS

• Appeared in 29 games and started 20 as a freshman last season • Scored seven runs to go with 13 hits, one double, one triple, four RBIs and went 1-for-1 on stolen base attempts • When Lucio is successful, the Cardinals are successful: the team went 3-1 in games where she had more than one hit
